iOS app weird crash in background

I need help.

I'm working on an old iOS app written in Objective-c. It was released in 2014 and now I have migrated the project to Xcode 8. After migration everything works as expected except weird crash when app is in background(not immediately but after some time). It's hard to debug because crash occurs only when device is disconnected from Xcode. I have checked device logs and it seems like it's core data crash:

One thing that's odd is that you say this happens in the background, but the crashes are happening when the app is in the foreground as far as the system is concerned:

Coredata Migration Crash

In my latest app update I have a few users complaining about crashes and I managed to get my hands on a crash report. Here's the crash reason from the symbolicated crash log.

Core-data migrations can take time. If it takes too long for your first view to load then the watchdog will kick in a kill your app. This can happen when you user has much more data than you expect. Instead add a migration checker. And if you need to do a migration then show a loading UI with a loading animation while you load the store.
