In Python, to combine values from multiple rows into one row. We can use the str. join() method to pass any delimiter we want to separate all the values in a single string.

A special tool that allows us to perform complex manipulations of data effectively and efficiently is Pandas. Inside pandas, we mostly deal with a dataset in the form of DataFrame, and the DataFrames are 2-dimensional data structures in pandas. DataFrames consist of rows, columns, and data in Pandas. We have been given a dataframe consisting of multiple rows that we must combine into a single row in pandas. We can use the agg(~) method and the join(~) method to concatenate the row values to merge rows within a group in Pandas DataFrame.

  • append(): is used for appending rows of other dataframe to the end of the provided dataframe in pandas, and it returns a new dataframe object. To append two data frames in Pandas, use the contact() function.

Here is an example of how to combine different rows into one row based on the index in Pandas:

Fig : Preview of the output that you will get on running this code from your IDE.

Code

In this solution we're using Pandas library.

Instructions

Follow the steps carefully to get the output easily.

  1. Install pandas on your IDE(Any of your favorite IDE).
  2. Copy the snippet using the 'copy' and paste it in your IDE.
  3. Add required dependencies and import them in Python file.
  4. Add print statement at end of the code(like 'print(df)').
  5. Run the file to generate the output.

I hope you found this useful. I have added the link to dependent libraries, version information in the following sections.

I found this code snippet by searching for 'how to combine multiple rows into one row based on index in pandas' in kandi. You can try any such use case!

Environment Tested

I tested this solution in the following versions. Be mindful of changes when working with other versions.

  1. The solution is created in PyCharm 2021.3.
  2. The solution is tested on Python 3.9.7.
  3. Pandas version-v1.5.2.

Using this solution, we are able to combine multiple rows into one row based on index in pandas with simple steps. This process also facilities an easy way to use, hassle-free method to create a hands-on working version of code which would help us to combine multiple rows into one row based on index in pandas.
