DataFrames are powerful and flexible data structures that allow easy data manipulation and analysis. They provide various methods and attributes to perform operations such as filtering, sorting, aggregating, and reshaping data. DataFrame is similar to a spreadsheet or a SQL table and can be considered a series collection that shares the same index.

To merge rows in a pandas DataFrame to create ranges, you can use the "groupby()" and "apply()" methods.

  • apply(): The apply() method in pandas is used to apply a function to one or more columns or rows of a DataFrame. The function can be a built-in Python function, a user-defined function, or a lambda function.
  • groupby(): The groupby() method is a powerful tool for data aggregation and analysis, and it is widely used in data analysis and data science workflows.

Alternatively, you can use the “pd.concat” function to concatenate the start and end values and then use the .groupby() and “.agg()” method to get the min and max values.

  • .agg(): The agg() method in pandas is used to apply multiple aggregation functions to one or more columns of a DataFrame or a groupby object.

You can look at the code below to learn more about merging Pandas DataFrame on the multindex column.

Code

In this solution we're using Pandas library.

Instructions

Follow the steps carefully to get the output easily.

  1. Install pandas on your IDE(Any of your favorite IDE).
  2. Copy the snippet using the 'copy' and paste it in your IDE.
  3. Add required dependencies and import them in Python file(import pandas).
  4. Run the file to generate the output.

I hope you found this useful. I have added the link to dependent libraries, version information in the following sections.

I found this code snippet by searching for 'Merging pandas dataframe rows to create ranges' in kandi. You can try any such use case!

Environment Tested

I tested this solution in the following versions. Be mindful of changes when working with other versions.

  1. The solution is created in PyCharm 2021.3.
  2. The solution is tested on Python 3.9.7.
  3. Pandas version-v1.5.2.

Using this solution, we are able to merge pandas dataframe rows to create ranges with simple steps. This process also facilities an easy way to use, hassle-free method to create a hands-on working version of code which would help us to merge pandas dataframe rows to create ranges.
