Why do Switch and ListView controls in MAUI not update with 2-way binding?
            Asked 2022-Apr-11 at 09:33

This question is about two MAUI controls (Switch and ListView) - I'm asking about them both in the same question as I'm expecting the root cause of the problem to be the same for both controls. It's entirely possible that they're different problems that just share some common symptoms though. (CollectionView has similar issues, but other confounding factors that make it trickier to demonstrate.)

I'm using 2-way data binding in my MAUI app: changes to the data can either come directly from the user, or from a background polling task that checks whether the canonical data has been changed elsewhere. The problem I'm facing is that changes to the view model are not visually propagated to the Switch.IsToggled and ListView.SelectedItem properties, even though the controls do raise events showing that they've "noticed" the property changes. Other controls (e.g. Label and Checkbox) are visually updated, indicating that the view model notification is working fine and the UI itself is generally healthy.

Build environment: Visual Studio 2022 17.2.0 preview 2.1
App environment: Android, either emulator "Pixel 5 - API 30" or a real Pixel 6

The sample code is all below, but the fundamental question is whether this a bug somewhere in my code (do I need to "tell" the controls to update themselves for some reason?) or possibly a bug in MAUI (in which case I should presumably report it)?

            Sample code

The sample code below can be added directly a "File new project" MAUI app (with a name of "MauiPlayground" to use the same namespaces), or it's all available from my demo code repo. Each example is independent of the other - you can try just one. (Then update App.cs to set MainPage to the right example.)

Both examples have a very simple situation: a control with two-way binding to a view-model, and a button that updates the view-model property (to simulate "the data has been modified elsewhere" in the real app). In both cases, the control remains unchanged visually.

Note that I've specified {Binding ..., Mode=TwoWay} in both cases, even though that's the default for those properties, just to be super-clear that that isn't the problem.

The ViewModelBase code is shared by both examples, and is simply a convenient way of raising INotifyPropertyChanged.PropertyChanged without any extra dependencies:

These both may be bugs with the currently released version of MAUI.

This bug was recently posted and there is already a fix for the Switch to address this issue.

How to configure proxy in emulators in new versions of Android Studio?
            Asked 2022-Feb-23 at 14:14
            Problem Description

I need to configure the proxy manually in my emulator through Android Studio. From the official Android documentation, it is suggested that this change can be made in the "settings" tab of the emulator's extended controls. The problem is that it seems to me that this documentation is outdated, as this setting is no longer displayed in the "settings" tab of the Android Studio emulators' extended controls.

Replacing YouTube HTML links with embed code
            Asked 2022-Jan-30 at 22:33

I'm writing web pages in markdown and converting them to HTML using md2html tool. I want to process the output HTML file and find any youtube link like this:

and replace it with the embed code:

I toyed around a little with Grammars, mostly to get familiar with them, but concluded this probably isn't the ideal tool for the job. Plus I'd prefer to use existing modules that are easily adaptable to other similar tasks rather than roll my own half-baked solution.

Perl5 has some good tools for this kind of thing but I'd like to use a pure Raku solution so I can learn more Raku.

Any recommendations for good approaches to this problem?

            Javascript: frame precise video stop
            Asked 2022-Jan-28 at 14:55

I would like to be able to robustly stop a video when the video arrives on some specified frames in order to do oral presentations based on videos made with Blender, Manim...

I'm aware of this question, but the problem is that the video does not stops exactly at the good frame. Sometimes it continues forward for one frame and when I force it to come back to the initial frame we see the video going backward, which is weird. Even worse, if the next frame is completely different (different background...) this will be very visible.

To illustrate my issues, I created a demo project here (just click "next" and see that when the video stops, sometimes it goes backward). The full code is here.

The important part of the code I'm using is:

The video has frame rate of 25fps, and not 24fps:

After putting the correct value it works ok: demo
The VideoFrame api heavily relies on FPS provided by you. You can find FPS of your videos offline and send as metadata along with stop frames from server.

The site videoplayer.handmadeproductions.de uses window.requestAnimationFrame() to get the callback.

There is a new better alternative to requestAnimationFrame. The requestVideoFrameCallback(), allows us to do per-video-frame operations on video.
The same functionality, you domed in OP, can be achieved like this:

            Asked 2021-Dec-13 at 13:36

We have a JavaFX based application which is not modularized (there are reasons, a legacy library is involved) but we build an custom runtime using jdeps and jlink.

We've recently rewritten the app and added a couple of new dependencies, as well as removing others. Now the script that is building the application suddenly stopped working during the jdeps call.

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Dec-13 at 13:36

Update: These issues have been fixed, and a patched version of jdeps is available as part of the early access build for JDK 18 at: http://jdk.java.net/18/ (starting from build 26)

Turning my comments into an answer. There seem to be 3 bugs going on here:

            1. The MultiReleaseException seems to be because jdeps can not handle classes in different jars that have the same name, such as module-info.class, but are stored in a different META-INF/versions/xxx directory. (JDK-8277165)
            2. The fact that this exception is sometimes suddenly not occuring seems to be the result of a race condition in the code that checks for the above; classes of the same name having multiple versions. (JDK-8277166)
            3. The MultiReleaseException is missing it's exception message since it's thrown as part of an asynchronous task, which wraps it in an ExecutionException, which then leads to jdeps not reporting the exception correctly. (JDK-8277123)

As for a workaround, I don't think there's a good one at this point, except maybe for editing all the jars on the class path so that they put the module-info.class in the same META-INF/versions/xxx directory (but, this might have other consequences as well, so you probably don't want to run with the edited jars, and only use them for jdeps).
