Answered 2019-Apr-15 at 22:44Figured out the answer, turns out I dynamically set the layer Id right before it gets output from node.
Requesting a close on this SO as it cannot help anyone in the future

There are two ways to build from source. These work on both OS X and Linux:. Using A) is recommended. You do not need to have Mapnik installed already, so this is the easiest and most predictable approach. When you use the route a binary package of Mapnik is downloaded dynamically from mason.
