            The math module consists mostly of thin wrappers around the platform C math library functions.

            While python itself can only execute a single instruction at a time, a low level c function that is called by python does not have this limitation.
            So it's not python that is using multiple cores but your system's well optimized math library that is wrapped by python's math module.

            That basically answers both your questions.

            Regarding the usefulness of multiprocessing: It is still useful for those cases, where you're trying to parallelize pure python code or code that does not call libraries that already use multiple cores. However, it comes with inter process communication (IPC) overhead that may or may not be larger than the performance gain that you get from using multiple cores. Tuning IPC is therefore often crucial for multiprocessing in python.

            I have four questions. Suppose in spark I have 3 worker nodes. Each worker node has 3 executors and each executor has 3 cores. Each executor has 5 gb memory. (Total 6 executors, 27 cores and 15gb memory). What will happen if:

            • I have 30 data partitions. Each partition is of size 6 gb. Optimally, the number of partitions must be equal to number of cores, since each core executes one partition/task (One task per partition). Now in this case, how will each executor-core will process the partition since partition size is greater than the available executor memory? Note: I'm not calling cache() or persist(), it's simply that i'm applying some narrow transformations like map() and filter() on my rdd.

            • Will spark automatically try to store the partitions on disk? (I'm not calling cache() or persist() but merely just transformations are happening after an action is called)

            • Since I have partitions (30) greater than the number of available cores (27) so at max, my cluster can process 27 partitions, what will happen to the remaining 3 partitions? Will they wait for the occupied cores to get freed?

            • If i'm calling persist() whose storage level is set to MEMORY_AND_DISK, then if partition size is greater than memory, it will spill data to the disk? On which disk this data will be stored? The worker node's external HDD?

            I answer as I know things on each part, possibly disregarding a few of your assertions:

You can service 1000 partitions with 10 cores, processing one at a time. What if you have 100K partition and on-prem? Unlikely you will get 100K Executors. >>> Moving on and leaving Driver-side collect issues to one side: You may not have enough memory for a given operation on an Executor; Spark can spill to files to disk at the expense of speed of processing. However, the partition size should not exceed a maximum size, was beefed up some time ago. Using multi-core Executors failure can occur, i.e. OOM's, also a result of GC-issues, a difficult topic.

Will they wait for the occupied cores to get freed? >>> They will be serviced by a free Executor at a point in time.

On which disk this data will be stored? The worker node's external HDD? >>> Yes, and it will be spilled to the local file system. I think you can configure for HDFS via a setting, but local disks are faster.

            This is not necessarily the best way to do it, but the shortest in writitng time. I don't know if you are familiar with python generators, but we will have to use one. the generator will work as a work dispatcher.

            I am running a TPC-DS benchmark for Spark 3.0.1 in local mode and using sparkMeasure to get workload statistics. I have 16 total cores and SparkContext is available as

            Q1. For local[*], driver and executors are created in a single JVM with 16 threads. Considering Spark's configuration which of the following will be true?

            • 1 worker instance, 1 executor having 16 cores/threads
            • 1 worker instance, 16 executors each having 1 core

            • executor is a jvm process when you use local[*] you run Spark locally with as many worker threads as logical cores on your machine so : 1 executor and as many worker threads as logical cores. when you configure SPARK_WORKER_INSTANCES=5 in spark-env.sh and execute these commands start-master.sh and start-slave.sh spark://local:7077 to bring up a standalone spark cluster in your local machine you have one master and 5 workers, if you want to send your application to this cluster you must configure application like SparkSession.builder().appName("app").master("spark://localhost:7077") in this case you can't specify [*] or [2] for example. but when you specify master to be local[*] a jvm process is created and master and all workers will be in that jvm process and after your application finished that jvm instance will be destroyed. local[*] and spark://localhost:7077 are two separate things.
            • workers do their job using tasks and each task actually is a thread i.e. task = thread. workers have memory and they assign a memory partition to each task in order to they do their job such as reading a part of a dataset into its own memory partition or do a transformation on read data. when a task such as join needs other partitions, shuffle occurs regardless weather the job is ran in cluster or local. if you were in cluster there is a possibility that two tasks were in different machines so Network transmission will be added to other stuffs such as writing the result and then reading by another task. in local if task B needs the data in the partition of the task A, task A should write it down and then task B will read it to do its job

The order is guaranteed and this is clearly documented.

            Does anyone know whether the same holds true for the IServiceProvider.GetServices() method ?

            If the answer to the above question is yes, does this holds true even in the following example (where two different instances of the same class are registered as implementations for the same service type) ?
