            Certbot 1.11 update on Amazon linux
            Asked 2021-Feb-23 at 07:04

            I want to install recent upgraded certbot version on Amazon Linux.

            Certbot has updated its distribution which does not upgrade with Amazon Linux AMI 2016.03.3.x86_64 HVM GP2.

            Getting following errors while I tried to update Linux using yum update -y

            Is there any need to upgrade Amazon Linux?

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Feb-23 at 07:04

            Yes, I had to migrate AWS Linux AMI 2016 to AWS AMI 2 to upgrade certbot version.

            I followed following steps:

            sudo amazon-linux-extras install epel -y sudo yum-config-manager --enable epel sudo yum update -y sudo yum install -y certbot python2-certbot-nginx sudo certbot -v

            certbot 1.11 installed.

            You are casting a std::string* to char* in fileToWriteTo.write(reinterpret_cast(&currentCitizenEntry), sizeof(currentCitizenEntry));. This is just wrong. The right way is fileToWriteTo.write(currentCitizenEntry.c_str(), currentCitizenEntry.length());
            The same goes for reading fileToReadFrom.read(reinterpret_cast(&currentLine), sizeToRead);. You are to read to a temporary buffer and then build std::string from that buffer.

            This compiles and should work, however, not tested:

            When you run ldd, you see not only your direct dependencies, but the indirect dependencies of your dependencies. The libraries that your shared library depends on have different dependencies in the two different locations.

            In particular, in one location it's resolving libpq.so.5 using

            libpq.so.5 => /home/ciaran/vcpkg/installed/x64-linux/lib/libpq.so.5

            while in the other it's

            libpq.so.5 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpq.so.5

            which in turn brings in different sets of libraries.

            You are obviously mixing EL6 and EL7 packages.

            Fix your installation by installing the proper EPEL configuration package.

            BTW, CentOS 6 is close to its end of life (in November) so I heartily recommend using a more modern version.

            you must delete

            set (RELEASE_FLAGS "$ {RELEASE_FLAGS} -flto")

            or just put a # before it, this way

            #set (RELEASE_FLAGS "$ {RELEASE_FLAGS} -flto")

            this can be found in CMakeList.txt

            You're not using yum, you're using rpm.

            Running rpm will just install the packages listed on its command line (for Debian users, it's like dpkg -i). If you ran yum, then it would install any required packages as well (like apt-get install). So you probably want:

            You can add the path to the so file to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and check if the executable picks it up and works fine.

            export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=pathToFolderWithLib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

            ANSWER

            Answered 2018-Apr-19 at 11:45

            This all depends.

            If you are creating one or several Debian packages by your compiling, using proper packaging tools and workflows), and afterwards install them (via dpkg), these packages will contain dependency information (some automatically detected - like which dynamic libraries are required to run/load the generated binaries; others manually added during the packaging process). These dependencies will then ensure that all the required packages will stay installed.

            However, if you just compile some random software superserver and install it via make install, the system has no way of knowing that your binary /usr/local/bin/superserver actually requires the presence of Debian packages.

            When you installed some -dev packages to satisfy build dependencies, this might have pulled in some additional packages (typically the corresponding dynamic libraries; e.g. installing libfoo-dev will make sure that you also have libfoo0 installed). Once you have removed all packages (e.g. libfoo-dev) that depend on another package which has been automatically installed to satisfy these dependencies (e.g. libfoo0), then apt-get -y autoremove will automatically remove those leftovers.

            So if your superserver depends on libfoo0 but the system doesn't know about it, you will end up with a broken superserver binary.

            Berkeley Db 4 and later versions compatibility
            Asked 2018-Mar-19 at 13:02

            For Berkeley db, some distro like fedora have both libdb4 and libdb(version 5), so why is this, is version 4 not compatible with future versions? Does my application need to support both versions?

            ...

            There was a log file format change between version 4 and 5 that requires an upgrade. Essentially, yes, version 4 databases are not strictly compatible with the version 5 runtime. The on-disk data must be upgraded. Not all applications are ready to handle this, so libdb4 is still floating around.

            You can find the changelog on Oracle's BDB site, here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/berkeleydb/downloads/index-082944.html

            BDB version 6 has been out for about four years now. That's not much time in the life of a 20+ year old database. So, if you're finding that version 5 is still the widely distributed version (it probably is), then you should write your application to that. It has numerous bugfixes. If you want maximum compatibility with (much) older distros, write your application to version 4.
