On Windows 10 Pro 21H2 with VS2022 17.1.2 and .NET 6, I am porting a simple C# gRPC client to C++, but the C++ client always fails to connect to the server despite my code seemingly doing the same, and I ran out of ideas why.

Non-POSIX-compliant systems (such as Windows) need to specify the root certificates in SslCredentialsOptions, since the defaults are only configured for POSIX filesystems.

Answered 2022-Jan-31 at 13:05You need to use TLS for your local setup. The host you need a certificate for is local.example.com
. There is no way to obtain a certificate from Letsencrypt
for this name, because you're not controlling the example.com
domain. One of the ways Letsencrypt
creates a certificate is a challenge - you prove that you own the domain by creating a TXT DNS record. If you own a domain you can do that, but your case is different, because you only need this for local development.
However, you can just use openssl
to generate a self signed certificate for whichever domain name you want. This is a good reference on how to do this. You can use the local.example.com
domain name for the generated certificate. If you're successful, you'll end up with the certificate and it's private key. Note where you save those files, as you'll need them. Keep in mind that the certificate is self-signed, so your browser will give you a warning, unless you add this certificate to the trust store of your operating system.
The next step in your case is to make Traefik use those self signed certificates when serving content from your application. I think this answer has a good example of that.
After having this, you'll only need to edit your hosts file and redirect your localhost:8080
(the port on which your Traefik serves your application) to local.example.com
.
Also, Traefik is not the only solution for your case. You can also achieve the same using Nginx, for example. Choose which one satisfies your use case. My suggestion would be to use the one that's easiest to configure, because it's for local development. Here's the first result I got when searching for a nginx docker-compose self-signed certificate

After two days of never ending debegging, I understood the problem. I had not opened 443 port in EC2 security group. I have Django server which uses WebSockets to send real time updates to web clients. This is all running perfectly fine locally (with manage.py runserver
), but in production I am running into the problem that most messages are simply not sent at all. I test this by opening two browsers, making a change in one, which should then be reflected in the other browser. Like I said, this all works locally, but not in production. In production some WebSocket messages are sent by the server and received by the web client, but maybe 20% or so? The rest is just not sent at all.

I have an Elasticsearch DB running on Kubernetes exposed to my_domain.com/elastic
as an Istio virtual service, which I have no problem accessing via the browser (as in I get to login successfully to the endpoint). I can also query the DB with Python's Requests. But I can't access the DB with the official python client if I use my_domain.com/elastic
. The LoadBalancer IP works perfectly well even with the client. What am I missing? I have SSL certificates set up for my_domain.com via Cert-Manager and CloudFlare.

, however, when running in production on an EC2 server via npm run build

It may be not the only source (to be retested on test2 subdomain), but when I created a new subdomain in the hosted zone (test3, not used anywhere before) and pointed it via A
entry to the load balancer (as "alias" in AWS console), and then added to the ingress a new rule with /
