            How to avoid getting TypeLoadExceptions in Unity when using/creating external assemblies?

            I am currently building an external assembly for my Unity projects. For that i have created a new class library project in Visual Studio (Community 2019).

            When using specific "System.[...]" resources (e.g. System.Random) i get a TypeLoadException when using the self created dll in my Unity Project.

            TypeLoadException: Could not resolve type with token 01000010 (from typeref, class/assembly System.Random, System.Runtime, Version=5.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a)

            The Unity version that i used for testing are 2021.1.14f1 and 2022.1.0b8.

            I tried switching the framework version of the class library from .NET 5.0 even down to .NET Core 1.0 or also in Unity switching from IL2CPP to Mono or changing the Api Compatibility Level up and down.

            Currently none of this has worked for me and somehow i dont find anything that is helping me online.

            How can i get on the same framework level in my external visual studio project as the Unity projects that should use the dll?

            This is a summary of my comments beneath the question.

            For pre-compiled .NET assemblies to use as plugins in Unity be sure your external project is either a .NET Standard 2 class library or .NET Framework 4.x class library. This happens to be the same profiles for code compiled by Unity. https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/dotnetProfileSupport.html.

            Note anything beyond .NET Standard 2 including .NET 5 & 6 are not supported in Unity or out.

            Also I think your attempt of .NET Core 1.0 was just a bit too low. Try again with .NET Standard 2.0.

            Yes this worked for me. I could even use .NET Core 3.1.

            Careful though because .NET Core 3.1 (with the TFM1 of netcoreapp3.1) surpasses the last .NET Core-.NET-Standard-compliant build. i.e. .NET Core 3.0 under the .NET Standard 2.1 umbrella which wasn't supported anyway under Unity's Stable scripting runtime (with the max being .NET Standard 2.0).

            I tried some experiments of my own and though the plugin was initially loaded by Unity, later I encountered a Unity error stating:

            Unloading broken assembly Assets\Plugins\MyExperimental.dll, this assembly can cause crashes in the runtime

            We can have some early Christmas Presents by changing the C# Language level for the external C# projects that will appear in Unity as pre-compiled assemblies.

            The default C# Langage version for a .NET Standard 2.0 project is C# 7.3 whilst .NET Core 3.x project is C# 8.0.

            Now in the flight simulator I'm creating, I'd like to represent units of measurement like airspeed, altitude and distance using immutable structs and I'm quite lazy so I don't want to do alot of typing. By staggering coincidence C# 10 has introduced record structs which can be marked as readonly offering true immutability (unlike C# 9). Unforunately .NET Standard 2.0 projects defaults to C# 7.3 so we can't use these features. Luckily there is a way to override the C# language for a project whilst keeping the overall project type the same.

            To get C# 10 support open your project file which will look something like the following. Generally you won't find a specified and so the usual C# version will be in this case C# 7.3 for a .NET Standard 2.0 project as mentioned.

            Error when running on device, not in Unity editor

            I am trying to upload a new version of my game to my iPhone via Xcode. With this app this has not been a problem before but now I do have a problem.

            So I created a new smaller project to test. It works in the editor but not when upload to my iPhone (IOS).

            I am running Unity 2021.2.7f1 Apple Silicon.

            The problem is related to some missing module so I cannot open the db from IOS.

            I think it looks like something with opening the database but I am not sure. The database is copied to the "Application.persistentDataPath" path for sure.

            I am running Unity 2021.2.7f1 Apple Silicon.

            "dbconn.Open();" is where it fails on IOS but not the Mac. I have not yet tested on Android.

            I finally solved this problem based on the above post, see thread in my comment. Comment from Baydogan:

            Finally I have found a workaround until unity fixes this bug.

            1. Don't modify any unity editor file. Just build for iOS as usual.
            2. Search for "// System.Void System.Runtime.InteropServices.CriticalHandle::Cleanup()" on xcode project.
            3. Move a few lines below and comment out the line that starts with : "Marshal_SetLastWin32Error_"
            4. DONE

            I am trying to make protobuf-net work with Unity. From the lot of research I've done the last days, it seems to be complicated to get both to work fine together. I have right now a problem I can't get around, when building using IL2CPP. The serialization appears to sometimes fail for certain types, like Dictionary or Dictionary but works fine for Dictionary. To make things clear, I'm using protobuf-net version 2.4.6 from nuget as it seems that v3 isn't supported at all from unity (unimplemented IL2CPP methods). The occurring error is:

            After almost a week of struggles and a lot of debugging I found the problem. In short, the crash was caused by the Unity.Entities 0.17.0-preview.41 package. (ref https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com.unity.entities@0.17/manual/index.html)

            Even if an empty project is built on IL2CPP scripting backend + Development build is unchecked and the above mentioned Entities preview package is installed the app will crash and you will probably get the same error as me.

            I don't know if it was a code stripping error after all but I found out a strange thing, if the Entities preview package is enabled it's first in the Script Execution Order (which you can check in the Project Settings) and maybe that caused the issue of a missing Internal function. (as the Entities package is dependent on the UnityEngine.Jobs.TransformAccess but as the Entities package executes first, it can't find the Jobs yet, that's my logic behind this, but please correct me if I'm wrong)

            I'm still not sure why I had that package installed in the first place, as I didn't even use it in this project, so removing it solved all my issues and the project now runs smooth. Maybe this will help someone who has a similar issue in the future. All I can say as conclusion is:

            1. Be careful with preview packages.
            2. Don't use Unity.Entities preview package until they fix this issue.

            did not add scene to the build. I think thats why.
