so I am wrestling to get all the dependencies in the pom.xml file but it is still failing to grab them.

You're missing the parent pom from their Github account. I found the link for you. It's here. You want to clone this in the same directory as where you cloned the other repo. Then you can package the project you're working with just fine.

Edit: From your comment I see you don't have the compiler plugin either. Put this in your pom.xml:
