            What is the Sobel operator?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 18:13

            I tried 5 different implementations of the Sobel operator in Python, one of which I implemented myself, and the results are radically different.

            My questions is similar to this one, but there are still differences I don't understand with the other implementations.

            Is there any agreed on definition of the Sobel operator, and is it always synonymous to "image gradient"?

            Even the definition of the Sobel kernel is different from source to source, according to Wikipedia it is [[1, 0, -1],[2, 0, -2],[1, 0, -1]], but according to other sources it is [[-1, 0, 1],[-2, 0, 2],[-1, 0, 1]].

            Here is my code where I tried the different techniques:

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 14:22

            according to wikipedia it's [[1, 0, -1],[2, 0, -2],[1, 0, 1]] but according to other sources it's [[-1, 0, 1],[-2, 0, 2],[-1, 0, 1]]

            Both are used for detecting vertical edges. Difference here is how these kernels mark "left" and "right" edges.

            For simplicity sake lets consider 1D example, and let array be

            [0, 0, 255, 255, 255]

            then if we calculate using padding then

            • kernel [2, 0, -2] gives [0, -510, -510, 0, 0]
            • kernel [-2, 0, 2] gives [0, 510, 510, 0, 0]

            As you can see abrupt increase in value was marked with negative values by first kernel and positive values by second. Note that is is relevant only if you need to discriminate left vs right edges, when you want just to find vertical edges, you might use any of these 2 aboves and then get absolute value.

            Model.evaluate returns 0 loss when using custom model
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 15:52

            I am trying to use my own train step in with Keras by creating a class that inherits from Model. It seems that the training works correctly but the evaluate function always returns 0 on the loss even if I send to it the train data, which have a big loss value during the training. I can't share my code but was able to reproduce using the example form the Keras api in https://keras.io/guides/customizing_what_happens_in_fit/ I changed the Dense layer to have 2 units instead of one, and made its activation to sigmoid.

            The code:

            As you manually use the loss and metrics function in the train_step (not in the .compile) for the training set, you should also do the same for the validation set or by defining the test_step in the custom model in order to get the loss score and metrics score. Add the following function to your custom model.

            Let me 1. explain the reason behind this observation, and 2. how to fix it.

            Reason:

            One needs to be careful about how the data is oriented when computing the divergence (or the gradient in general), since it is important to compute the gradient along the correct axis to obtain a physically valid result.

            np.meshgrid can output the mesh in two ways, depending on how you set the index parameter

            It's because that shape is made with linear gradient as background, so you just need to adjust gradient percentages:

            From

            background: linear-gradient(25deg, yellow 50%, transparent 50%);

            to

            background: linear-gradient(25deg, yellow 20%, transparent 20%);

            You could try using element.scrollTop to save the position of the scrollbar and then use the saved value to set the scrollTop property to where it was when the timed function is called.

            Update the navigation menu when changing the display conditions of icons in BottomNavigationBarItem in the flutter
            Asked 2021-Jun-14 at 13:53

            I have a navigation menu that I made for a test application, there are some tabs that I want to hide if I am not logged into the application. After logging in, these tabs should appear. The problem is that after logging in, I go to the desired page and I don't see all the navigation menu icons. For them to appear, I need to click on one of the available icons (only 2 icons are available for authorization) and only then the navigation menu will be updated and everything will be as it should be. All 6 icons will be visible! Can someone help me with this? Here I described the problem with the code that I am using. I would be grateful for any help.

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-14 at 13:53

            Your page is not re built after logging in the user, that is why your nav bar is not updated. When you click on the button it refreshes and correctly displays the new elements.

            Instead of using a global variable you could look into a state management package in order to make the logged-in user available throughout your app. (article for getx the simplest one out there)

            If this is simply a prototype and you want some quick and dirty, I guess you could trigger a reload of your app once a user logs in by wrapping your app with a widget that exposes a rebuild method. (article)
