Magnification Windows API - How to add Smoothing/Anti Aliasing
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 20:44

            Context

Since Windows 10 version 2004 update, the Magnifier windows application was updated. And as with every update, there are some issues with it.

Since those issues might take a long time to fix, I've decided to implement my own small project full screen magnifier.

I've been developing in c#, .Net 4.6 using the Magnification API from windows magnification.dll . All went good and well, and the main functionality is now implemented. One thing is missing though, a smoothing Mode for pixelated content... Windows Magnifier implements an anti aliasing/ smoothing to the Zoomed in content.

I've checked and the Magnification API, doesn't seem to provide that option.

how do i add smoothing mode to magnifier on windows magnification API?

I'm aware of pixel smoothing methods, but not familiar with win32 API to know where to hook the smoothing method to, before the screen refreshes.

            EDIT:

Thanks to @IInspectable answer, after a small search i found this call to the Magnification API in a python project.

Based on that, I wrote this snippet in my C# application , and it works as intended!

There is no public interface in the Magnification API that allows clients to apply filtering (other than color transforms). This used to be possible, but the MagSetImageScalingCallback API was deprecated in Windows 7:

This function works only when Desktop Window Manager (DWM) is off.

Even if it is still available, it will no longer work as designed. From Desktop Window Manager is always on:

In Windows 8, Desktop Window Manager (DWM) is always ON and cannot be disabled by end users and apps.

With that, you're pretty much out of luck trying to replicate the results of the Magnifier application's upscaler using the Magnification API.

The Magnifier application appears to be using undocumented API calls to accomplish the upscaling effects. Running dumpbin /IMPORTS magnify.exe | findstr "Mag" lists some of the public APIs, as well as the following:

            • MagSetLensUseBitmapSmoothing
            • MagSetFullscreenUseBitmapSmoothing

Unless you are willing to reverse-engineer those API calls, you're going to have to spend your time on another project, or look into a different solution.

A note on the upscaling algorithm: If you look closely you'll notice that the upscaled image doesn't exhibit any of the artifacts associated with smoothing algorithms.

The image isn't blurred in any way. Instead, it shows sharp edges everywhere. I don't know what upscaling algorithm is at work here. Wikipedia's entry on Pixel-art scaling algorithms lists some that have very similar properties. It might well be one of those, or a modified version thereof.

Show recipes based on selected ingredients - Google Sheets
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 20:07

I've been trying to build a small database with Google Sheets for me, my wife, my friend and his partner, to make it quick and easy to search through our recipes from HelloFresh!

I've input all of the recipes, and I am able to query to show recipes we would like based on which meat/vegetable, and what main ingredient (pasta, rice etc).

The next thing I would like to do is have a list generate/filter based on what ingredients we have, in this case cells J6:J13. I would like the list to generate if any criteria is met. For example, if both Chicken Thigh and Beef Mince are selected, it will show all recipes that have chicken OR beef.

Would anyone be able to assist, please?

Error handling in SpringBoot kafka in Batch mode
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 17:34

I am trying to figure out is there any way to send failed records in Dead Letter topic in Spring Boot Kafka in Batch mode. I don't want to make the records being sent in duplicate as it's consuming in batch and few are already processed. I saw this link ofspring-kafka consumer batch error handling with spring boot version 2.3.7

I thought about a use case to stop container and start again without using DLT but again the issue of duplication will come in Batch mode.

@Garry Russel can you please provide a small code for batch error handling.

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 17:34

The RetryingBatchErrorHandler was added in spring-kafka version 2.5 (which comes with Boot 2.3).

The listener must throw an exception to indicate which record in the batch failed (either the complete record, or the index in the list).

Offsets for the records before the failed one are committed and the failed record can be retried and/or sent to the dead letter topic.

            See https://docs.spring.io/spring-kafka/docs/current/reference/html/#recovering-batch-eh

There is a small example there.

The RetryingBatchErrorHandler was added in 2.3.7, but it sends the entire batch to the dead letter topic, which is typically not what you want (hence we added the RetryingBatchErrorHandler).

Logistic regression - create new variable using others (SAS)
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 16:41

I have a small dataset based on a survey(about 80 obsv) & on which i want to perform a logistic regression using SAS.

My survey contains some variables (named X1,X2,X3) that i want to reunite as categories of a new created variable named X4.

The problem is that those variables X1-X3 already have categories (YES/NO/WITHOUT OPINION)

How can i reunite them as categories of X4 but with considering the values that they have ?

to help you understand my question :

            Y(=1/0) = X1 X2 X3

            X1-X3 each have 3 categories (YES/NO/WITHOUT OPINION)

            What i want is :

Proc logistic data = have ; model Y = X4 and others such as age, city... but X4 can take 3 values.

The problem isn't creating X4 based on X1-X3 but how to affect X4 the values that X1-X3 each takes ?

            (NB: i say X1-X3 but it's more)

I do this in SAS but even a theorical explanation would be helpful !

            Thank you.

I think that the comments are right for the most part - this probably won't help your regression.

But - to answer how to literally do this; usually what you would do is to use powers of 2 (or 3).

So, for typical "yes/no" where you don't care about the 3rd one, you'd assign things like this:
