Error handling in SpringBoot kafka in Batch mode
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 17:34

I am trying to figure out is there any way to send failed records in Dead Letter topic in Spring Boot Kafka in Batch mode. I don't want to make the records being sent in duplicate as it's consuming in batch and few are already processed. I saw this link ofspring-kafka consumer batch error handling with spring boot version 2.3.7

I thought about a use case to stop container and start again without using DLT but again the issue of duplication will come in Batch mode.

@Garry Russel can you please provide a small code for batch error handling.

The RetryingBatchErrorHandler was added in spring-kafka version 2.5 (which comes with Boot 2.3).

The listener must throw an exception to indicate which record in the batch failed (either the complete record, or the index in the list).

Offsets for the records before the failed one are committed and the failed record can be retried and/or sent to the dead letter topic.

            See https://docs.spring.io/spring-kafka/docs/current/reference/html/#recovering-batch-eh

There is a small example there.

The RetryingBatchErrorHandler was added in 2.3.7, but it sends the entire batch to the dead letter topic, which is typically not what you want (hence we added the RetryingBatchErrorHandler).

How to inject ObjectMapper bean in Spring Kafka JsonSerializer?
            Asked 2021-Jun-14 at 14:35

spring-kafka creates a ValueSerializer instance in the AbstractConfig class using a no-args constructor.

I can see that JsonSerializer has an ObjectMapper constructor which I would like to use to inject a preconfigured ObjectMapper bean.

The default ObjectMapper includes null values in the response which I would like to remove. I added spring.jackson.default-property-inclusion: NON_EMPTY to my properties.yml but since Spring creates a default instance, this does not help me.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

I have been facing the exception below on the Kafka consumer side. Surprisingly, this issue is not consistent and an older version of the code (with the exact same configuration but some new unrelated features) works as expected. Could anyone help in determining what could be causing this?

You don't need all the standard @KafkaListener method invoking infrastructure when your listener already implements one of the message listener interfaces; instead of registering endpoints for each listener, just create a container for each from the factory and add the listener to the container properties.

Bootstrap broker not being used to consume from topic
            Asked 2021-Jun-10 at 17:33

            Puzzle:

The configured broker is not local, it's BROKER_1.FOO.NET:9094, and it is available.

it's BROKER_1.FOO.NET:9094, and it is available.

The bootstrap port may be available and responding to requests, but that broker then returned it's configured advertised.listeners.

            Based on your error, either

            1. that's set to be localhost/127.0.0.1:9092
            2. or you're getting the default Spring property for the bootstrap servers config

Spring Cloud Stream deserialization error handling for Batch processing
            Asked 2021-Jun-01 at 20:00

I have a question about handling deserialization exceptions in Spring Cloud Stream while processing batches (i.e. batch-mode: true).

Per the documentation here, https://docs.spring.io/spring-kafka/docs/2.5.12.RELEASE/reference/html/#error-handling-deserializer, (looking at the implementation of FailedFooProvider), it looks like this function should return a subclass of the original message.

Is the intent here that a list of both Foo's and BadFoo's will end up at the original @StreamListener method, and then it will be up to the code (i.e. me) to sort them out and handle separately? I suspect this is the case, as I've read that the automated DLQ sending isn't desirable for batch error handling, as it would resubmit the whole batch.

And if this is the case, what if there is more than one message type received by the app via different @StreamListener's, say Foo's and Bar's. What type should the value function return in that case? Below is the pseudo code to illustrate the second question?

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-May-27 at 13:35

Yes, the list will contain the function result for failed deserializations; the application needs to handle them.

The function needs to return the same type that would have been returned by a successful deserialization.

You can't use conditions with batch listeners. If the list has a mixture of Foos and Bars, they all go to the same listener.

How can I pause the polling behavior of Kafka Consumers?
            Asked 2021-May-25 at 13:03

I want to stop polling for a specific topic at a specific time.

            • spring-kafka 2.5.5
            • Kafka version 2.5.1

For example, even if a message comes in to the TEST topic partition, the message is piled up in the partition from 00 to 01, and there is no consumption.

Use the KafkaListenerEndpointRegistry bean to control the lifecycle of the listener containers; you can stop and start them according to whatever conditions you desire.

You can also configure them to be stopped until you explicitly start them.

            See https://docs.spring.io/spring-kafka/docs/current/reference/html/#kafkalistener-lifecycle.

            2.2.x is no longer supported.

See the documentation for the reasons why recovery after some number of failures is not supported with batch listeners and older versions of the framework.

You can use the RetryingBatchErrorHandler (since 2.3.7) or RecoveringBatchErrorHandler (since 2.5.0) instead.
