Terraform: ignore changes to a certain environment variable
            Asked 2021-May-28 at 00:24

I have an AWS Lambda function I created using terraform. Code-changes are auto-deployed from our CI-server and the commit-sha is passed as an environment variable (GIT_COMMIT_HASH) - so this changes the Lambda function outside of the Terraform-scope (because people were asking...).

This works good so far. But now I wanted to update the function's node-version and terraform tries to reset the env var to the initial value of "unknown".

I tried to use the ignore_changes block but couldn't get terraform to ignore the changes made elsewhere ...

I tried to replicate the issue and in my tests it works exactly as expected. I can only suspect that you are using an old version of TF, where this issue occurs. There has been numerous GitHub Issues reported regarding the limitations of ignore_changes. For example, here, here or here.

I performed tests using Terraform v0.15.3 with aws v3.31.0, and I can confirm that ignore_changes works as it should. Since this is a TF internal problem, the only way to rectify the problem, to the best of my knowledge, would be to upgrade your TF.

If you want SSL termination to happen at the server instead at the ingress/LoadBalancer, you can use a something called SSL Passthrough. Load Balancer will then not terminate the SSL request at the ingress but then your server should be able to terminate those SSL request. Use these configuration in your ingress.yaml file depending upon your ingress class

            Heroku Database
            Asked 2021-May-16 at 13:54

Good day, I have a Django app that I hosted on Heroku with the codes from GitHub, it deployed fine and I have a domain, for instance myapp.herokuapp.com. But when I make some changes to the website itself, everything seems alright, then I make changes in the code and push it to GitHub. It deploys again perfectly, but all the former changes I made on the website get discarded, it now looks like a fresh deployed app. Auto-deploy from GitHub is enabled in my Heroku settings.

how can I retain changes I make on the Heroku website after updating my code??

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-May-16 at 13:54

Heroku Dynos have an ephemeral file system therefore it cannot be used to persist data (at every redeployment all local changes are discarded).

You can use a database, either external (MongoDB Atlas) or the Heroku Postgres, both have a free tier.

If you need to save simple files you can use an external storage service (S3, Dropbox, even GitHub). See Files on Heroku for details and examples.

Merge out of sync feature branch with unsolvable conflicts to master
            Asked 2021-May-11 at 22:18

I know this probably should never happen :( but the reality is I have a master branch has some initial features of a smoke test, which is currently live on a site to for real clients to testing. Then the team plans to adds more features to the smoke test. I have been actively working on the new feature branch, let's call it feature-branch.

The feature-branch requires auth and more complex logic than master. I couldn't sync feature-branch with master while developing on it as updates on master will auto-deployed to live testing and we don't want to do that until the security is perfect.

Now the feature-branch is pretty much ready, however, the extra features caused dramatically changes on the code. I plan to merge this feature-branch to master to deliver the features added.

I expect there will be huge amount of conflicts, some of which would be hard to resolve. Luckily the major conflicts are only in a couple of files.

Is there a way to "overwrite" the master branch with this feature-branch while we keep the previous commit records of master branch?

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-May-08 at 12:07

I suggest that you pull the master branch to your feature-branch, resolve possible conflicts. At this point you can make a pull request or simply push your feature branch to the master. All,your previous commit on the master branch will still be present. VCS are meant for that

How to integrate API Gateway with internal ALB
            Asked 2021-May-06 at 07:51

According to https://docs.aws.amazon.com/apigateway/latest/developerguide/http-api-develop-integrations-private.html it is possible to integrate API Gateway with an internal Application Load Balancer using a private VPC link.

However I cannot make it work.

I have a service accessible internally through the ALB. The ALB has no public IP, it balances requests in a AWS Fargate cluster (all within private subnets).

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-May-06 at 07:51

I got it working. It is definitely possible to use API Gateway http integrated with a private (i.e: internal facing) ALB that balances traffic in private subnets.

The problem I had is that when I created the API in API Gateway through the console, there is an option to add integration, but that integration at that point only allows HTTP or Lambda, and I don't want that, I want a private integration using a VPC link I create in advance.

            So here are the steps:

            1. Create (if non existing already) a security group that allows HTTP traffic on 80. This group will be associated later on to VPC link
            2. Create VPC link associated to the VPC and, explicitly, to the private subnets where the EC2services or fargate cluster are. Make sure you select the security group that allows HTTP traffic
            3. Create HTTP API in Apu Gateway. On the first step give it a name but DO NOT create an integration just yet. Skip that. Skip the route creation also. Choose a stage name or leave the $default (I use $default and auto-deploy).
            4. Create a route. If you want to accept anything, do so by choosing ANY and the path /{proxy+}.
            5. Finally, on that route, attach an integration. This time you'll see that there is an option to choose a private resource where you can explicitly select the private ALB with its http listener AND the VPC link created previously.

That's it. Http requests to Api Gateway will be directed to the private internal facing ALB.

skaffold dev --render-only=true should do what you're looking for.

(I'm a bit surprised that we support dev --render-only since skaffold dev is really meant for a rapid compile-deploy-edit cycle, sometimes called the innner loop, and the deploy is generally considered an essential part of that loop.)

Accessing postgresql in review stage of Gitlab CI/CD
            Asked 2021-Mar-09 at 19:04

How do I import data to the postgresql server during the Review stage (for a review app) during the Gitlab CI/CD process?

I am currently using Gitlab CI/CD to deploy to AWS. Postgresql is used throughout the build stages.

During the build stages, information is successfully imported to postgresql from another application. The data is then dumped as a SQL file to an artifact (in two locations).

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Mar-09 at 19:04

Take a look at the .auto-deploy job (it might be coming from an included job this too). If the .auto-deploy job has a dependencies keyword, it's affecting your artifacts.

By default, when one job uploads artifacts, jobs in all following stages will automatically download the artifact. This can be controlled using the dependencies keyword on individual jobs.

For example, using dependencies: [] means this job has no dependencies, so no artifacts are downloaded. dependencies: ["npm install job"] means that the artifacts from a job called "npm install job" are the only artifacts downloaded, even if artifacts from other jobs are uploaded.

So if you see the dependencies keyword in the .auto-deploy job, you'll have to include it in your review job. If .auto-deploy has dependencies: [], you'll have to have dependencies: ["your-job-name"] where the job name is the job that uploads the files.

If .auto-deploy has a dependencies keyword that has at least one job name, you'll have to copy the jobs, and include them in your review job:

I had the same issue today. It appears to me that the problem has to do with the version of knex not being compatible with the version of nodejs. After looking into it more, Strapi isn't compatible with nodejs over v.14 or npm over v.6 (Heroku was trying to build my Strapi app with node v.15). To resolve it, I updated the package.json file to make sure that Heroku uses the versions that are compatible. Here is what I added, it worked for me and I hope it works for you.

In the package.json file, update the versions of node and npm like this:

            Switching "maven-assembly-plugin" on/off
            Asked 2020-Dec-04 at 17:05

Our current DevOps environment runs mvn package and auto-deploys the jar artifact in a private Maven repository and all target folder is cached for later use. But the project has also a maven-assembly-plugin set up what packages a second jar file (a fat jar suffixed as -jar-with-dependencies).

We don't want the "fat jar" to be generated by maven-assembly-plugin and so stored in that cache along with other files in that case.

Is there a way to switch maven-assembly-plugin on and off by command line (or any other property or environment variable) to run it only when explicitly required?

The easiest approach (IMHO), would be to define the plugin in its own profile. Inside your pom.xml, you add a profiles section, and in that a profile that would include the plugin:
