It is intended to be a central place for people to share meaningful data streams and creative visualizations. There are plenty of sites out there that aggregate large, static data sets. But I'm more interested in data that is constantly changing, and visualizations that expose patterns or help draw meaning from that data (or at least is cool looking). It is currently hosted at but I will move it to a more appropriate domain (when I think of one). I want to keep things simple, so my intent is to focus on data streams that are fairly low volume: 1 - 10 events per second. And while it would be a fun challenge to try to build a platform that handles twitter-level volume (10,000+ events per second), that's not what I want to focus on in this project. I want to focus on meaningful data that can be processed and visualized using no more than a couple of cheap VMs. To get the ball rolling, I created a realtime stream of github updates, and hooked it up to a visualization in the style of the 80's movie WarGames.

            I've never used ffmpeg before, and I'm having some trouble with my Discord bot playing a locally hosted and stored mp3 file, of which I own the rights to use. Sadly I am running into an issue where the bot joins the proper voice channel, FFmpeg opens the mp3 file, but no audio is streamed. I have properly set environmental variables, path is proper, there is no error in debugger. Any help would be appreciated.

            Consider that dealing with big files (lets say bigger than hundreds of MB) involves some security and usability concerns (resuming, overflows, etc.). An interesting reading in this regard is this.

            Another consideration is about how .Net handles multipart requests and the different options to upload files:

            • Multipart/form-data
            • Multipart/related
            • Base64 encoded file with Application/json content-type
            • Using the body request with MIME types

            Also the RFC multipart specification is very interesting because you can learn how the boundaries in a request are defined. I think the best way to handle this requirements is by using libraries that allow you to resume files or retry.

            The most simple solution in your case would be to send the variables as part of the multipart content instead of hardcoded in the url request as well as giving a name to the stream content so you let the "magic" behind the WebApi maps this properly:

            I'm not entirely sure if Stack Overflow is the correct website to ask this question, but I have been thinking about it ever since a friend mentioned it to me a week ago. I know on a baseline level what hardware acceleration does: offloads certain workloads to other components in your computer (i.e. your GPU or sound card) to improve performance in various applications. I just would like to know what exactly is happening when hardware acceleration is on v/s off when streaming a Google Chrome window and why it makes a difference in a completely different application.

            If you're unfamiliar with what I'm referencing in the title, here's a simple example of what I mean: Let's say you want to watch a Netflix show or sporting event with your friends on Discord, so you all hop in a call together on the app to watch you stream the video in a Chrome tab. However, when your friends join the stream, they can hear the audio of what you're streaming but the video feed is blacked out for those watching. Interestingly enough, one of the solutions people have found to this issue is disabling hardware acceleration in Google Chrome's settings which allows the video and audio to be streamed no problem.

            It makes sense why this occurs: to prevent potential piracy and illegal redistribution of copywrited material, but why does disabling hardware acceleration re-enable this functionality? Does hardware acceleration allow data to be shared between apps? Does Discord set a flag saying a particular window/screen is being streamed and Chrome can only "see" that flag while hardware acceleration is enabled?

            I guess the underlying question is: how does having hardware acceleration enabled allow Netflix, a TV provider or any other website for that matter to know their content is being streamed?

            The hardware acceleration allows the HDCP content to remain encrypted all the way to the display. By disabling it, the video is decrypted in software usually at a reduced resolution and/or frame rate.

            I'm trying to download a large data file from a server directly to the file system using StreamSaver.js in an Angular component. But after ~2GB an error occurs. It seems that the data is streamed into a blob in the browser memory first. And there is probably that 2GB limitation. My code is basically taken from the StreamSaver example. Any idea what I'm doing wrong and why the file is not directly saved on the filesystem?

            Suggestion / Background

            StreamSaver is targeted for those who generate large amount of data on the client side, like a long camera recording for instance. If the file is coming from the cloud and you already have a Content-Disposition attachment header then the only thing you have to do is to open this URL in the browser.

            There is a few ways to download the file:

            • location.href = url
            • download
            • </code></li> <li>and for those who need to post data or use a other HTTP method, they can post a (hidden) <code><form></code> instead.</li> </ul> <p>As long as the browser does not know how to handle the file then it will trigger a download instead, and that is what you are already doing with <code>Content-Type: application/octet-stream</code></p> <hr /> <p>Since you are downloading the file using Ajax and the browser knows how to handle the data (giving it to main JS thread), then <code>Content-Type</code> and <code>Content-Disposition</code> don't serve any purpose.</p> <p>StreamSaver tries to mimic how the server saves files with ServiceWorkers and custom responses.<br /> You are already doing it on the server! The only thing you have to do is stop using AJAX to download files.             Your code reads the length of the diff for the last 100 ms or 1000 ms (the default value when you don't specify the timeframe). I.e. the remote API sends just the diff, not the full list.

            The varying length of the diff is expected.

            Example:

            An order book has 2 bids and 2 asks:

            • ask price 1.02, amount 10
            • ask price 1.01, amount 10
            • bid price 0.99, amount 10

            Why is this?

            Generating {1..99999999} 100000000 arguments and then parsing them requires a lot of memory allocation from bash. This significantly stalls the whole system.

            Additionally, large chunks of data are read from /dev/urandom, and about 96% of that data are filtered out by tr -dc '0-9'. This significantly depletes the entropy pool and additionally stalls the whole system.

            Is the data buffered somewhere?

            Each process has its own buffer, so:

            • cat /dev/urandom is buffering
            • tr -dc '0-9' is buffering
            • fold -w 5 is buffering
            • head -n 1 is buffering
            • the left side of pipeline - the shell, has its own buffer
            • and the right side - | cat has its own buffer

            That's 6 buffering places. Even ignoring input buffering from head -n1 and from the right side of the pipeline | cat, that's 4 output buffers.

            Also, save animals and stop cat abuse. Use tr , instead of cat /dev/urandom | tr. Fun fact - tr can't take filename as a argument.

            Is there a way to optimize this, so that the random numbers are piped/streamed into cat immediately?

            Remove the whole code.

            Take only as little bytes from the random source as you need. To generate a 32-bit number you only need 32 bits - no more. To generate a 5-digit number, you only need 17 bits - rounding to 8-bit bytes, that's only 3 bytes. The tr -dc '0-9' is a cool trick, but it definitely shouldn't be used in any real code.

            Following this post and this, here's my situation:
            Users upload images to my backend, setup like so: LB -> Nginx Ingress Controller -> Django (Uwsgi). The image eventually will be uploaded to Object Storage. Therefore, Django will temporarily write the image to the disk, then delegate the upload task to a async service (DjangoQ), since the upload to Object Storage can be time consuming. Here's the catch: since my Django replicas and DjangoQ replicas are all separate pods, the file is not available in the DjangoQ pod. Like usual, the task queue is managed by a redis broker and any random DjangoQ pod may consume that task.
            I need a way to share the disk file created by Django with DjangoQ.

            The above mentioned posts basically mention two solutions:
            -solution 1: NFS to mount the disk on all pods. It kind of seems like an overkill since the shared volume only stores the file for a few seconds until upload to Object Storage is completed.
            -solution 2: the Django service should make the file available via an API, which DjangoQ would use to access the file from another pod. This seems nice but I have no idea how to proceed... should I create a second Django/uwsgi app as a side container which would listen to another port and send an HTTPResponse with the file? Can the file be streamed?

            Third option: don't move the file data through your app at all. Have the user upload it directly to object storage. This usually means making an API which returns a pre-signed upload URL that's valid for a few minutes, user uploads the file, then makes another call to let you know the upload is finished. Then your async task can download it and do whatever.

            Otherwise you have the two options correctly. For option 2, and internal Minio server is pretty common since again, Django is very slow for serving large file blobs.
