QUESTION
From the official Elasticsearch's documentation about optimistic concurrency control I read about the _seq_no and _primary_term as parameter needed to implement the optimistic locking.
I didn't understand the utility of the _seq_no parameter. Is not enough a sequence number to indentify uniquely a change in a document?
Maybe a possible scenario/example can explain to me why the primary term is needed.

Answered 2021-May-08 at 15:07I found an example that can be useful to understand the utility of the _primary_term:
Suppose we have 3 nodes A, B and C where A is the primary shard. Three operations are written on the primary shard:
- operation 1: _seq_no = 1 _primary_shard = 1
- operation 2: _seq_no = 2 _primary_shard = 1
- operation 3: _seq_no = 3 _primary_shard = 1
the primary shard starts to send these operations to be applied to the replicas shard. After a while suppose we have this situation:
- Node A (operation 1, 2 and 3 completed)
- Node B (operation 1 and 3 completed)
- Node C (operation 2 completed)
of course node B and C are not aligned with the primary shard yet. Suppose that before the Node A sends the remain operations fails and suppose that Node B becames the primary shard. It sends so all its operations history (all operations after the global checkpoint. All the operations before the global checkpoint are completed in all the active nodes. For sake of simplicity we can assume that operation 1 is the first operation executed after the last global checkpoint) to the replicas shard. Node C sees that operations 1 and 3 arrived from Node B have the _primary_shard = 2. It understand that the operation 2 is associated with the old primary shard and because of that it executed the rollback on operation 2 (the _primary_term = 1) and executed the operation 1 and 3 to be aligned with the new primary node.
So the primary term is useful to distinguish between old and new primary shard.

P.S. I think the gif showed in the link above is not correct. When the primary shard sends the operation 2 and 3 to the replicas shard, the global checkpoint on the replicas is not updated.

I have a process which in short runs 100+ of the same databricks notebook in parallel on a pretty powerful cluster. Each notebook at the end of its process writes roughly 100 rows of data to the same Delta Lake table stored in an Azure Gen1 DataLake. I am seeing extremely long insert times into Delta for what I can only assume is Delta doing some sort of locking the table while an insert occurs and then freeing it up once a single notebook finishes, which based on reading https://docs.databricks.com/delta/concurrency-control.html it is implied that there are no insert conflicts and that multiple writers across multiple clusters can simultaneously insert data.
This insertion for 100 rows per notebook for the 100+ notebook takes over 3 hours. The current code that is causing the bottleneck is:

Currently there are no partitions on this table which could be a possible fix but before going down this route is there something I am missing in terms of how you get un-conflicted inserts in parallel?

Answered 2020-Sep-15 at 12:35You have to choose between two types of isolation levels for your table and the weaker one is the default, so there is no running away from isolation levels. https://docs.databricks.com/delta/optimizations/isolation-level.html
Delta Lake has OCC (Optimistic Concurrency Control) this means that the data you want to write to your table is validated against all of the data that the other 99 processes want to write. This means that 100*100=10000 validations are being made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimistic_concurrency_control
Please also bear in mind that your data processing architecture will finish when the last notebook of the 100 finishes. Maybe one or multiple of the 100 notebooks takes 3 hours to finish and the insert is not to blame?
If long running notebooks is not the case I would suggest you try to store your result data from each notebook in some sort of data structure (e.g. store it in 100 files from each notebook) and then batch insert the data of the data structure (e.g. files) to the destination table.
The data processing will be parallel, the insert will not be parallel.

I am new to ES7 and trying to understand optimistic concurrency control.
I think I understand that when I get-request a document and send its _seq_no
and _primary_term
values in a later write-request to the same document, if the values differ, the write will be completely ignored.
But what happens to the document in the default case where I don't send the _seq_no
and _primary_term
values? Will the write go through even if it has older _seq_no
and _primary_term
values (therefore making the index inconsistent), or only be processed if the values are newer?
If the former, will the document eventually be consistent?
I'm trying to figure out if I need to send these values to get eventual consistency or if I get it for free without sending those values.

Answered 2020-Mar-06 at 19:56It's a great distributed system question. Let me break down the problem into sub-parts for readability and even before explain what is _seq_no
and _primary_term
as there isn't much explanation of those on the ES site.
_seq_no
is the incremental counter which is assigned to ES document for each operation(update, delete, index), for example:- the first time you index a doc, it will have value 1, next update will have 2, next delete operation will have three and so on. Read operation doesn't update it._primary_term
is the also an incremental counter, but change only when a replica shard is promoted as primary, due to network or any other failure, so if everything is excellent in your cluster it will not be changed, but in case of some failure and other replica promoted to primary then it would be increased.
Coming to the first question,
Q:- What happens to the document in the default case where I don't send the _seq_no and _primary_term values?
Ans:- you can have lost update issue, suppose you have a counter which you are updating, simultaneously 2 requests read the counter value to 1 and trying to increment by 1. now when you don't specify these above terms explicitly, then it's calculated by ES. Now both the requests reach simultaneously to ES, then ES(primary shard) will process them one by one by increasing the sequence number, so at the end, your counter will have value 2, instead of 3. to make sure this doesn't happen, you pass these term values explicitly, and when ES tries to update them will see different sequence number and will reject your request. To prevent such lost updates, use-cases, its always recommended sending explicit version number.

Answer:- These are related to concurrency control and nothing to deal with eventual consistency. In ES, write always happens to primary shards, but read can happen to any replicas(may contain obsolete data), which makes ES eventual consistent.

Answered 2019-Feb-13 at 13:50I remember stumbling across the very same problem in a project I was working on. As I could not figure out the solution using the Spring documentation - and other answers on Stack Overflow were not working for me - I ended up creating a workaround.
The trick is essentially to force the application to authenticate the user on a WebSocket connection request. To do that, you need a class which intercepts such events and then once you have control of that, you can call your authentication logic.

Why dont work correctly the user session when this expires after recover remember-me cookie?
I have a peculiar error with I enable the remember-me option in Spring Security. When the session expire, I can navigate for the rest of my web pages, but the logout, and the others POST methods produce a error in server.
