            Ensure Fairness in Publisher/Subscriber Pattern

            How can I ensure fairness in the Pub/Sub Pattern in e.g. kafka when one publisher produces thousands of messages, while all other producers are in a low digit of messages? It's not predictable which producer will have high activity.

            It would be great if other messages from other producers don't have to wait hours just because one producer is very very active.

            What are the patterns for that? Is it possible with Kafka or another technology like Google PubSub? If yes, how?

            Multiple partitions also doesn't work very well in that case, or I can see how.

            In Kafka, you could utilise the concept of quotas to prevent a certain clients to monopolise the cluster resources.

            There are 2 types of quotas that can be enforced:

            1. Network bandwidth quotas

            I know the below is true for sequence number within a partition :-

            Sequence Number follows a predictable pattern where numbering is contiguous and unique within the scope of a partition. So if message x has sequence number 500 , message y will have sequence number 501.

            Say last sequence number when message was received was 5000, and then no more messages were received and after 7 days retention policy , on 10th day we receive a message on the partition , will the sequence number start from 5001 or will it be different this time?

            The reason i am asking because I am seeing: "The expected sequence number xxx is less than the received sequence number yyy."?

            For example:- The supplied sequence number '33508' is invalid. The last sequence number in the system is '583'

            Just to update this post with answer, we found the concerned EventHubs are indeed recreated, but checkpoint store was not reset. Thus, SequenceNumber presented by client (read from checkpoint store) was greater than latest sequence number at service.

            As Serkant confirmed above, Sequence number is always contiguous. It can only be interrupted by recreating the eventhub. Typically, you shouldn’t have a need to delete and recreate EventHub in production. But in case you run into the situation, you should also reset checkpoint store.

            it took a bit of investigating since documentation on the issue is scarse, but i think i figured out what's happening.

            profile.FirstName.ToLower().Contains(searchWord) gets translated by the driver to a $regex query.

            from what i can see, the regex search in mongodb is not collation aware. so you can't use regex functionality to do diacritic insensitive searches.

            however, the solution to your requirement is to create a Text Index containing all of the fields you want to search in and utilize that index to do a diacritic & case insensitive search for your search words. it will also be the most efficient way to achieve your requirement.

            the one limitation of using a text index is that it won't let you search for partial matches of words such as Jo. mongodb fulltext search only works on complete words unfortunately.

            Substituting the built-in input function's value with a string is often used to test whether a method has the expected response to that input. A tool like monkeypatch would be used to do this, then we'd assert that calling the method returns the expected value.

            Even when you call another method inside the method, if the second one has a predictable return value, you can use a similar approach.

            Now, what if that method's expected behaviour is to call a method which also asks for input? The aim is to make sure that the program reached that second input prompt (confirming the first input had the expected result). Is there a way to assert this alone?

            We depend on an external XSLT library that is out of our control. There are some fn:generate-id calls in this library and it is causing results to be different every time we run it.

            We are using Saxon 10.5 (Java). Is there a way to override or configure the fn:generate-id call so it will produce predictable results, while preserving the node uniqueness?

            You could post-process the output to replace the IDs with ones that you generate yourself, or you could change the stylesheet logic to use xsl:number (or an accumulator function) instead.

            In extremis, you could define your own implementation of the Saxon NodeInfo interface (perhaps subclassing an existing implementation), in which case you have full control of the generateId algorithm, but that's getting into some pretty deep water.

            In fact, at least for the TinyTree model, Saxon generates the ID in two parts: a document number, and a node-number within the document. If the document doesn't change, then the second part shouldn't change. You could post-process the result to strip out the document number. But of course you have then introduced a dependency into your application, you're assuming Saxon won't change its strategy.

            Detect Whether Script Was Imported or Executed in Lua

            In python, there is a common construction of the form if __name__ == "__main__": to detect whether the file was imported or executed directly. Usually, the only action taken in this conditional is to execute some "sensible, top level" function. This allows the same file to be used as a basic script and as a library module (and also as something an interactive user can import and use).

            I was wondering if there is a clean and reliable way to do this in lua. I thought I could use the _REQUIREDNAME global variable, but it turns out that this was changed in Lua 5.1. Currently, the lua require passes arguments (in the variadic ...), so in principle, these can be examined. However, this is either not reliable, not clean, or probably both, because obviously when a script is executed arguments can be passed. So to do this safely, you would have to examine the arguments.

            FWIW, require passes the module name as argument 1 (the string you called require on), and the path to the file it eventually found as argument 2. So there is a obviously some examination that can be done to try to detect this, which if not nearly as nice as if __name__ == "__main__": and can always be bypassed by a user by passing two suitably constructed arguments to the script. Not exactly a security threat, but I would hope there is a better solution.

            I also experimented with another method, which I found very ugly but promising. This was to use debug.traceack(). If the script is executed directly, the traceback is very predictable, in fact, it only has 3 lines. I thought this might be it, although, like I said, an ugly hack for sure.

            Do any more frequent lua users have advice? In effect, if I am writing module X, I want to either return X.main_func() in script mode or return X in import mode.

            EDIT: I took out an item which was actually incorrect (and makes my traceback solution workable). Additionally, the link provided in the comment by Egor Skriptunoff did provide another trick from the debug library which is even cleaner than using the traceback. Other than that, it seems that everyone ran into the same issues as me and the lua team has been disinterested in providing an official means to support this.

            everyone! This is my first post here, so I will try to do my best to ask properly and exposed right my doubts and what I tried so far.

            I've been trying to create one quotes generator, with a few features more.

            I already put 7 quotes examples, as objects into the array and leaved 3 "spaces free", counting from ID 8 to 10 to the users can add more quotes examples through the "Add new quote button"

            I tried to create the logic behind this (picking the HTML input field value typed by the user, add to new existing array through the Event Listener method, clicking on the button) as I commented in the last part of the JS file, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

            So, if you guys please can give me a hand, I appreciate it!

            PS. the ID key value of the object array it's a mandatory value.

            Re: the ultimate question: int_fast16_t is garbage for arrays because glibc on x86-64 unfortunately defines it as a 64-bit type (not 32-bit), so it wastes huge amounts of cache footprint. The question is "fast for what purpose", and glibc answered "fast for use as array indices / loop counters", apparently, even though it's slower to divide, or to multiply on some older CPUs (which were current when the choice was made). IMO this was a bad design decision.

            Generally using small integer types for arrays is good; usually cache misses are a problem so reducing your footprint is nice even if it means using a movzx or movsx load instead of a memory source operand to use it with an int or unsigned 32-bit local. If SIMD is ever possible, having more elements per fixed-width vector means you get more work done per instruction.

            But unfortunately int_fast16_t isn't going to help you achieve that with some libraries, but short will, or int_least16_t.

            See my comments under the question for answers to the early part: 200 stall cycles is latency, not throughput. HW prefetch and memory-level parallelism hide that. Modern Microprocessors - A 90 Minute Guide! is excellent, and has a section on memory. See also What Every Programmer Should Know About Memory? which is still highly relevant in 2021. (Except for some stuff about prefetch threads.)

            Your Update 2 with a faster PRNG

            Re: why L2 isn't slower than L1: out-of-order exec is sufficient to hide L2 latency, and even your LGC is too slow to stress L2 throughput. It's hard to generate random numbers fast enough to give the available memory-level parallelism much trouble.

            Your Skylake-derived CPU has an out-of-order scheduler (RS) of 97 uops, and a ROB size of 224 uops (like https://realworldtech.com/haswell-cpu/3 but larger), and 12 LFBs to track cache lines it's waiting for. As long as the CPU can keep track of enough in-flight loads (latency * bandwidth), having to go to L2 is not a big deal. Ability to hide cache misses is one way to measure out-of-order window size in the first place: https://blog.stuffedcow.net/2013/05/measuring-rob-capacity

            Latency for an L2 hit is 12 cycles (https://www.7-cpu.com/cpu/Skylake.html). Skylake can do 2 loads per clock from L1d cache, but not from L2. (It can't sustain 1 cache line per clock IIRC, but 1 per 2 clocks or even somewhat better is doable).

            Your LCG RNG bottlenecks your loop on its latency: 5 cycles for power-of-2 array sizes, or more like 13 cycles for non-power-of-2 sizes like your "L3" test attempts1. So that's about 1/10th the access rate that L1d can handle, and even if every access misses L1d but hits in L2, you're not even keeping more than one load in flight from L2. OoO exec + load buffers aren't even going to break a sweat. So L1d and L2 will be the same speed because they both user power-of-2 array sizes.

            note 1: imul(3c) + add(1c) for x = a * x + c, then remainder = x - (x/m * m) using a multiplicative inverse, probably mul(4 cycles for high half of size_t?) + shr(1) + imul(3c) + sub(1c). Or with a power-of-2 size, modulo is just AND with a constant like (1UL<.

            Clearly my estimates aren't quite right because your non-power-of-2 arrays are less than twice the times of L1d / L2, not 13/5 which my estimate would predict even if L3 latency/bandwidth wasn't a factor.

            Running multiple independent LCGs in an unrolled loop could make a difference. (With different seeds.) But a non-power-of-2 m for an LCG still means quite a few instructions so you would bottleneck on CPU front-end throughput (and back-end execution ports, specifically the multiplier).

            An LCG with multiplier (a) = ArraySize/10 is probably just barely a large enough stride for the hardware prefetcher to not benefit much from locking on to it. But normally IIRC you want a large odd number or something (been a while since I looked at the math of LCG param choices), otherwise you risk only touching a limited number of array elements, not eventually covering them all. (You could test that by storing a 1 to every array element in a random loop, then count how many array elements got touched, i.e. by summing the array, if other elements are 0.)

            a and c should definitely not both be factors of m, otherwise you're accessing the same 10 cache lines every time to the exclusion of everything else.

            As I said earlier, it doesn't take much randomness to defeat HW prefetch. An LCG with c=0, a= an odd number, maybe prime, and m=UINT_MAX might be good, literally just an imul. You can modulo to your array size on each LCG result separately, taking that operation off the critical path. At this point you might as well keep the standard library out of it and literally just unsigned rng = 1; to start, and rng *= 1234567; as your update step. Then use arr[rng % arraysize].

            That's cheaper than anything you could do with xorshift+ or xorshft*.

            Benchmarking cache latency:

            You could generate an array of random uint16_t or uint32_t indices once (e.g. in a static initializer or constructor) and loop over that repeatedly, accessing another array at those positions. That would interleave sequential and random access, and make code that could probably do 2 loads per clock with L1d hits, especially if you use gcc -O3 -funroll-loops. (With -march=native it might auto-vectorize with AVX2 gather instructions, but only for 32-bit or wider elements, so use -fno-tree-vectorize if you want to rule out that confounding factor that only comes from taking indices from an array.)

            To test cache / memory latency, the usual technique is to make linked lists with a random distribution around an array. Walking the list, the next load can start as soon as (but not before) the previous load completes. Because one depends on the other. This is called "load-use latency". See also Is there a penalty when base+offset is in a different page than the base? for a trick Intel CPUs use to optimistically speed up workloads like that (the 4-cycle L1d latency case, instead of the usual 5 cycle). Semi-related: PyPy 17x faster than Python. Can Python be sped up? is another test that's dependent on pointer-chasing latency.
