I found the solution in this blog post.

I did a combination of both these things:

You can directly include the pre-built angular-material-theme in the styles.css file. @import '@angular/material/prebuilt-themes/deeppurple-amber.css';

Note the lack of "~" in front of "@angular".

Update the following in angular.json file.
