Jenkins XCode iOS build failure due to missing module maps
            Asked 2020-Nov-02 at 08:24

I have a project with integrated Facebook SDK and I'm trying to build the project using my Jenkins xCode Integration, since I'm using CocoaPods I have to build the project using xcworkspace instead of xcproj file. If I open the workspace manually, archive and export ipa, everything works great. If I try to run the exact same process through Jenkins I'm getting an error on one of my pods stating that FBSDKcoreKite module.map can't be found, and that the Swiftshims module is missing. (as far as I know the swiftshims is part of the xCode and should only show missing if the path to it is somehow corrupt in the caching of xCode. I've tried cleaning my build, my build folder, removing derived data, erasing the xcodemodule folder, reinstalling pods, setup pods, and basically anything I could find online).

Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this? (using xCode12). Attaching exact build snippet:

I'm relatively new to Xcode development. Essentially, the project that I'm working on uses the PolarBleSdk library which also has an RxSwift dependency. I added these as frameworks/compiled modules and both were working without error last week. Today I go to run my project and get the following error:

Go to your build settings and remove any recursive search paths you have there. That's it. (any search path that ends with ** is a recursive one).

            QUESTION

If a DibSection is independent of any device, why does it need a device context?
            Asked 2019-May-06 at 14:09

When creating a bitmap you have three four choices:

            • CreateBitmap: creates a device-dependent bitmap (and it better be compatible with the device you eventually intend to use it on)
            • CreateCompatibleBitmap: creates a device-dependent bitmap (compatible with the DC you supply)
            • CreateDIBitmap: creates a device-dependent bitmap, but lets you specify the device-independent bits to initialize the bitmap with1 (functionally equivalent to calling CreateCompatibleBitmap + SetDIBits)
            • CreateDIBSection: creates a device-independant bitmap (but i have to supply a DC?)

It makes sense why CreateCompatibleBitmap would need an hdc parameter: it has to know which DC to be compatible with.

Note: It doesn't make sense why CreateBitmap doesn't take an hdc. How does it know what DC to be compatible with?

CreateBitmap doesn't take a DC, and it doesn't know what DC to be compatible with. That's your job. And you better make sure it's compatible with the DC you eventually intended to use it with.

Why does CreateDIBSection take a handle to a device context?

            CreateDIBSection function

The CreateDIBSection function creates a DIB that applications can write to directly. The function gives you a pointer to the location of the bitmap bit values. You can supply a handle to a file-mapping object that the function will use to create the bitmap, or you can let the system allocate the memory for the bitmap.

            The answer seems to be:

            • the hdc is only needed if usage = DIB_PAL_COLORS
            • otherwise (i.e. usage = DIB_RGB_COLORS) then hdc may be optional

APP using Realm Swift Pod doesn't run (CMD + R, crashes compiling Realm) but it does test (CMD + U) and does also archive
            Asked 2019-Apr-01 at 15:13

I'm having a strange problem doing some Proof of Concept compilations with my current project.

What we're trying to test is if our project compiles ok under XCode 10.2 (Beta 2 as of today, we know we also have betas 3 and 4 available). We know it's beta stuff, we have to be careful with it, etc...

Whatever... The strange situation we're dealing with is using Realm as a Pod (typical usage, otoh). Version is RealmSwift 3.13.1

Under XCode 10.1 (Swift 4 world) our whole project compiles. Under XCode 10.2 (Betas 2 and 4, again Swift 4 World), our project doesn't compile. In fact it crashes compiling Realm, with a nasty "segmentation fault code: 11" error.

We've tried to look around inside Realm forums, Stack Overflow, etc... with not much success. We're not sure about XCode 10.2 support for Realm and hence our question:

-Does XCode 10.2 compile Realm for a typical "CMD + R" run command deployment onto the simulator?

To make things a bit more complicated, CMD + U (run test suites) and Archive commands, DO COMPILE OUR WHOLE PROJECT ok, that is, no problem whatsoever when compiling REALM (Under XCode 10.2 beta 2 and 4). So our doubt is strange, we're not sure if we're doing something wrong, or if "run" vs "test/compile" are different commands in terms of the Realm compilation phase.

Any hint about where to check/test? We're starting to run out of ideas (beyond wating for Realm to officially support XCode 10.2 beta 2 ,3 and 4 in case it's not supported).

            Greetings

EDIT: We've been trying to nail down the exact cause of the "Realm Compilation Segementation Fault: Code 11". As far as we know, we have these situations:

1.- SWIFT version used in our code has nothing to do with the crash. No matter if we use SWIFT 4 or SWIFT 5, Xcode 10.2 still crashes when compiling certain Realm .swift files (included via Podfile)

2.- ALL versions of XCode 10.2 do crash (beta2, beta4 and final full official). Xcode 10.1 has no problem whatsoever.

3.- We've tried to isolate our "Data Module" inside an empty project (which is the one where our Realm dependency lives). When isolating this module, REALM COMPILES PERFECTLY.

4.- When we integrate the "Data Module" into the "big project" of us, then, when compiling Realm the SegFault crash appears.

The typical "crash dump" we get is (for example) this one (it's advisable to copy paste it into your favourite text editor, ugly lines ahead):

I've discovered why compiling Realm inside our "big" project caused Swift compiler to crash. Apparently the culprit is the "Thread Sanitizer" option inside the RUN section for the current schema.

As it seems, the new Swift compiler version has this problem with certain files, as it's noted in some "known issue" that our team overlooked (shame on us (?)!).

How to properly write to a file using File::Map?
            Asked 2019-Jan-08 at 04:56

I'm using File::Map often to map especially small text files into memory and e.g. process some read-only regular expressions on those. Now I have a use case in which I need to replace some text in the file as well and thought that I can still use File::Map, because it documents the following:

Files are mapped into a variable that can be read just like any other variable, and it can be written to using standard Perl techniques such as regexps and substr.

While the data I'm interested in to replace is properly replaced within the file, I'm losing data because the file keeps its original size and data is truncated in the end. The new data is a little bit larger than the old one. Both things are warned about as documented using the following sentences:

Writing directly to a memory mapped file is not recommended

Truncating new value to size of the memory map

The explanations to both warnings read like one shouldn't ever write anything using File::Map, but it might work in cases one can either live with truncated files or the overall file size is simply not changed at all. But the first quote explicitly mentions writes as supported without any exception from that rule.

So, is there some special way to safely write using File::Map, e.g. getting the underlying file increased and such? The first warning uses the wording directly, which I have the feeling that there's some other, better supported way to write?

I'm simply using =~ s/// on the mapped view currently, which seems to be the wrong approach. I couldn't even find anyone trying to write using File::Map at all, only the official tests which do exactly what I do and expect the warnings I get. Additionally, looking at the code, there seems to be only one use case in which writing doesn't result in a warning at all, though I don't understand how I'm able to trigger that:

            ...

            Answered 2018-Dec-07 at 19:39

            The first quote,

Files are mapped into a variable that can be read just like any other variable, and it can be written to using standard Perl techniques such as regexps and substr.

            is under the heading "Simplicity".

And it is true: You can simply write Perl code that manipulates strings and the data will end up in the file.

However, in the section Warnings we have:

Writing directly to a memory mapped file is not recommended

Due to the way perl works internally, it's not possible to write a mapping implementation that allows direct assignment yet performs well. As a compromise, File::Map is capable of fixing up the mess if you do it nonetheless, but it will warn you that you're doing something you shouldn't. This warning is only given when use warnings 'substr' is in effect.

That is, writing through an mmap'd variable is not efficient unless the modification of the string buffer can be done in place (the string has to be assembled and stored in memory first and is only copied over to the file afterwards). If you're OK with this, you can disable the warning with no warnings 'substr'.

Additionally, looking at the code, there seems to be only one use case in which writing doesn't result in a warning at all, though I don't understand how I'm able to trigger that.

That's the case where you're trying to write a buffer to itself. This happens when a scalar is actually modified in place. The other cases are workarounds for when the string buffer is replaced (e.g. because it's overwritten: $foo = $bar). For a real in-place modification no extra work is necessary and you don't get the warning.

But this doesn't help you because growing a string cannot be done in-place with a fixed size mapped buffer.

Changing the size of the file is not possible. This is not because of File::Map, but because the underlying mmap system call works on fixed size mappings and does not provide any option to resize files automatically.

If you need to edit files (especially small files), I recommend using edit in Path::Tiny instead.
