I read the answers to this question: Will Java 8 create a new List after using Stream "filter" and "collect"?
But it did not quite match my experience... I think. And I'm just wanting to make sure I'm clear on the situation.
Consider the following code (which can be run on https://www.tutorialspoint.com/compile_java_online.php):
...ANSWER
Answered 2021-Apr-15 at 17:56Look it's simple. The List will be new as ArrayList instance. Not the objects that the list contains. Since you modify the instances that the list contain it will appear modified to both lists
it is also modifying the objects in people. And this doesn't make sense to me if filter(...).collect()
Of course it will modify those objects. A list is just a collection that holds references to object instances.
In your case you have 2 collections (Lists) which hold references to the same instances. Using 1 list to modify the state of an object will reflect to both lists.
Here is a simple graphical representation
Using ref2 to modify the state of the instance it actually modifies the same instance that ref4 points to

QUESTION
I have a stream of nodes and a stream of edges that represent consecutive updates of a graph and I want to build patterns composed of nodes and edges using multiple joins in series. Let's suppose I want to match a pattern like: (node1) --[edge1]--> (node2).
My idea is to join the stream of nodes with the stream of edges in order to compose a stream of sub-patterns of type (node1) --[edge1]-->. Then take the resulting stream and join it with the stream of nodes another time in order to compose the final pattern (node1) --[edge1]--> (node2). Filterings on the particular type of nodes and edges are not important.
So I have nodes, edges and patterns structured in Avro format:

QUESTION
I was following the tutorial of the apache Kafka website link.
The input topic is processed as stream and middle topics also generated but the final output topic is empty.
Below is the topology output:
...ANSWER
Answered 2020-Nov-15 at 10:09Groupby works with windowing which is by default 1 day. So, to restream on another topic, the window needs to be closed. Therefore, closing the window is the solution or setting a low window size that would be closed in running the application.
I have solved the problem by closing the stream.
QUESTION
In a future course, I'll be having a discipline that uses Python with an emphasis of using sequences and generators and that kind of stuff inn Python.
I've been following an exercise list to exercise these parts. I'm stuck on an exercise that asks for a prime generator. Up until now, I haven't used Python very much, but I've read and done most of the exercises in SICP. There, they present the following program that makes use of the sieve of Eratosthenes to generate a lazy list of primes.

Answered 2020-Jul-04 at 21:42In the Python solution, sieve
will be a function that takes a generator and is itself a generator, something like the following:
QUESTION
I've a complex Kafka Stream application with 2 flows fully stateful in the same stream :
- it use a
Execution
topic as source, enhanced the message and republished back to the sameExecution
topic. - it join another topic
WorkerTaskResult
, add the result toExecution
and published back toExecution
Topic.
The main goal is to provide a workflow system.
The detailled logic are :
- an Execution is a list of TaskRun
- the
Execution
look at all the current state of allTaskRun
and find the next one to execute - If any is found, Execution alter their
TaskRunsList
and add the next one and publish back to Kafka, also it send to another queue the task to be done (WorkerTask
) - the
WorkerTask
is proceed outside of the Kafka stream and publish back to another queue (WorkerTaskResult
) with a simple Kafka Consumer & Producer - the
WorkerTaskResult
alter currentTaskRun
in the currentExecution
and changed the status (mostly RUNNING / SUCCEED / FAILED) and also published back toExecution
queue (with Kafka Stream)
As you can see, the Execution
(with TaskRun
list) is the state are current application.
The stream works well when all the message are sequential (no concurrency, I can only have one alter of TaskRun
list at the same time). When the workflow became Parallel (concurrent WorkerTaskResult
can be join), it seems that my Execution state is override and produce a kind of roolback.
Example log output:
...ANSWER
Answered 2020-Apr-22 at 21:54is this pattern (that is not a dag flow as we sink on the same topic) are supported by KafkaStreams ?
In general yes. You just need to make sure that you don't end up with an "infinite loop", i.e., at some point an input record should "terminate" and not produce anything to the output topic any longer. For your case, and Execution
should eventually not create new Tasks
any longer (via the feedback loop).
what is the good way to design this stream to be concurrency safe
It always depends on the concrete application... For your case, if I understand the design of your application correctly, you basically have two input topics (Execution
and WorkerTaskResult
) and two output topics (Execution
and WorkerTask
). When processing the input topics, messages from each input may modify shared state (i.e., a task's state).
Additionally, there is an "outside application" that reads from the WorkerTask
topic and write to the WorkerTaskResult
topic? Hence, there is actually a second loop in you overall data flow? I assume that there are other upstream applications that will actually push new data into the Execution
topic, too?
QUESTION
I had a day window with initially grace period set as O. Got a new requirement to add grace period of 15 mins.
Kafka streaming version: 2.1
Code Snippet-
KTable, JsonNode> profileAgg = transactions .groupByKey() .windowedBy( TimeWindows.of(Duration.ofSeconds(86400)).grace(Duration.ofSeconds(900)))
But somehow I am getting exception on process startup. How do I increase retention period?
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: The retention period of the window store KSTREAM-FILTER-0000000001 must be no smaller than its window size plus the grace period. Got size=[86400000], grace=[900000], retention=[86400000]

QUESTION
I have a list of object into the application context and I want to filter this list to get only one element to display jsp page. I tried to filter the list using a stream-filter function:

Answered 2020-Jan-24 at 08:04I have found a solution. Tomcat has its own stream library which has some functions like filter
, but it does not have collect
function. Instead of using the collect
function, use the toList
function.

QUESTION
I have a mix-and-match DSL-PAPI topology. The DSL part joins pageviews("pageviews" topic) with users ("users" topic) of those pageviews. I want to join both, so in case the user is new, then create a new "user" from pvs information into the "users" topic, and do nothing otherwise.
So I'm trying to do a left join between pageviews and users, and in case the user comes null, that means no user was created yet with this key, so in that case I create one.
In code, I get pageviews as stream and user as table, joined them producing new User when user comes null in the join, and then filtering and sending to "users" those new users.
...ANSWER
Answered 2019-Oct-15 at 10:18When a stream is in a subtopology that looks up into a table that is in another subtopology, then there may be regular consumption/production delays involved. This happens for example when you define streams or tables from topics directly. If you can use more meaningful directives like through
(which writes to topic but lets topology know it's going to still be used in this topology) it will help KafkaStreams
to know how there is such relation.
