How to connect to a GCP (Google Cloud Platform) Cloud SQL instance from an IPV6 address?
            Asked 2022-Mar-09 at 15:48

I am trying to reach our Postgres SQL server running as a GCP Cloud SQL instance from the PgAdmin 4 tool on desktop. For that you have to whitelist your IP address. Until this point it was working fine, the whole team used IPV4 addresses, but I moved to a new country where my new ISP assigned an IPV6 address to me, and it seems like GCP doesn't allow IPV6 addesses to be whitelisted, thus you can't use them to connect.

Here's a picture of the Connections/Allowed Networks tab:

Is there any kind of solution to this? Or do they expect me to only have ISPs who assign IPV4 addesses to me?

            Thank you.

Yes, there is a workaround for this but not using the UI, instead you need to use the Cloud SDK.

This has recently been added to cloud SDK beta. So as you can see in the documentation for gcloud sql connect:

If you're connecting from an IPv6 address, or are constrained by certain organization policies (restrictPublicIP, restrictAuthorizedNetworks), consider running the beta version of this command to avoid error by connecting through the Cloud SQL proxy: gcloud beta sql connect.

I couldn't find any Feature Requests for this being implemented into the UI at the moment, so if you'd like to have this changed I would suggest you to open one in Google's Issue Tracker system.

Kubernetes NodePort is not available on all nodes - Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
            Asked 2022-Jan-31 at 14:37

I've been trying to get over this but I'm out of ideas for now hence I'm posting the question here.

I'm experimenting with the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and I wanted to create a Kubernetes cluster which exposes some service.

            The goal is:

            • A running managed Kubernetes cluster (OKE)
            • 2 nodes at least
            • 1 service that's accessible for external parties

            The infra looks the following:

            • A VCN for the whole thing
            • A private subnet on 10.0.1.0/24
            • A public subnet on 10.0.0.0/24
            • NAT gateway for the private subnet
            • Internet gateway for the public subnet
            • Service gateway
            • The corresponding security lists for both subnets which I won't share right now unless somebody asks for it
            • A containerengine K8S (OKE) cluster in the VCN with public Kubernetes API enabled
            • A node pool for the K8S cluster with 2 availability domains and with 2 instances right now. The instances are ARM machines with 1 OCPU and 6GB RAM running Oracle-Linux-7.9-aarch64-2021.12.08-0 images.
            • A namespace in the K8S cluster (call it staging for now)
            • A deployment which refers to a custom NextJS application serving traffic on port 3000

And now it's the point where I want to expose the service running on port 3000.

            I have 2 obvious choices:

            • Create a LoadBalancer service in K8S which will spawn a classic Load Balancer in OCI, set up it's listener and set up the backendset referring to the 2 nodes in the cluster, plus it adjusts the subnet security lists to make sure traffic can flow
            • Create a Network Load Balancer in OCI and create a NodePort on K8S and manually configure the NLB to the ~same settings as the classic Load Balancer

The first one works perfectly fine but I want to use this cluster with minimal costs so I decided to experiment with option 2, the NLB since it's way cheaper (zero cost).

Long story short, everything works and I can access the NextJS app on the IP of the NLB most of the time but sometimes I couldn't. I decided to look it up what's going on and turned out the NodePort that I exposed in the cluster isn't working how I'd imagine.

The service behind the NodePort is only accessible on the Node that's running the pod in K8S. Assume NodeA is running the service and NodeB is just there chilling. If I try to hit the service on NodeA, everything is fine. But when I try to do the same on NodeB, I don't get a response at all.

That's my problem and I couldn't figure out what could be the issue.

            What I've tried so far:

            • Switching from ARM machines to AMD ones - no change
            • Created a bastion host in the public subnet to test which nodes are responding to requests. Turned out only the node responds that's running the pod.
            • Created a regular LoadBalancer in K8S with the same config as the NodePort (in this case OCI will create a classic Load Balancer), that works perfectly
            • Tried upgrading to Oracle 8.4 images for the K8S nodes, didn't fix it
            • Ran the Node Doctor on the nodes, everything is fine
            • Checked the logs of kube-proxy, kube-flannel, core-dns, no error
            • Since the cluster consists of 2 nodes, I gave it a try and added one more node and the service was not accessible on the new node either
            • Recreated the cluster from scratch

Edit: Some update. I've tried to use a DaemonSet instead of a regular Deployment for the pod to ensure that as a temporary solution, all nodes are running at least one instance of the pod and surprise. The node that was previously not responding to requests on that specific port, it still does not, even though a pod is running on it.

Edit2: Originally I was running the latest K8S version for the cluster (v1.21.5) and I tried downgrading to v1.20.11 and unfortunately the issue is still present.

Edit3: Checked if the NodePort is open on the node that's not responding and it is, at least kube-proxy is listening on it.

            ANSWER

            Answered 2022-Jan-31 at 12:06

Might not be the ideal fix, but can you try changing the externalTrafficPolicy to Local. This would prevent the health check on the nodes which don't run the application to fail. This way the traffic will only be forwarded to the node where the application is . Setting externalTrafficPolicy to local is also a requirement to preserve source IP of the connection. Also, can you share the health check config for both NLB and LB that you are using. When you change the externalTrafficPolicy, note that the health check for LB would change and the same needs to be applied to NLB.

Edit: Also note that you need a security list/ network security group added to your node subnet/nodepool, which allows traffic on all protocols from the worker node subnet.

How to fix "Unidentified contract"? OpenSea is unable to “understand” ERC1155
            Asked 2022-Jan-19 at 23:00

I have deployed a ERC-1155 based contract (based on OpenZeppelin) and minted some NFTs on this contract successfully. But when I want to use these NFTs in OpenSea, it always says "Unidentified contract".

            Example: https://testnets.opensea.io/assets/0xc7d3e4a5A0c3e14ba8C68ea1b8a99a9dBf3ca76F/2

            API-Example: https://testnets-api.opensea.io/api/v1/asset/0xc7d3e4a5A0c3e14ba8C68ea1b8a99a9dBf3ca76F/2/?force_update=true

Following their official Tutorial repository (which does not compile any more because of outdated dependencies and other issues) I have added some (maybe) opensea-specific functions and data that might required for OpenSea in order to work properly. However, OpenSea is able to grab all required data to display an NFT, but as long as they say "Unidentified contract", this all makes no sense so far.

            My question has:

has someone already managed to deploy a ERC-1155 and used it with OpenSea properly without this issue? Is there anything we have to "register" somehow contracts that are not based on ERC-721?

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Aug-27 at 22:07

I finally found the root cause! OpenSea expects a public property called name in order to display the proper Name of the Collection instead of a static label Unidentified contract.

I came across this while looking at their reference code (which depends on a now 3-year-old MultiToken-Contract implementation and needs all in all some downgrades of Node and other tools in order to get it build [a downgrade to Node 10 worked best for me today] ).

            Answered 2022-Jan-08 at 05:31

I've been working on something similar recently and would suggest you try using the kovan network and the oracle that chainlink has there. Even more specifically, I think it would be a good idea to confirm you can get it working using the api, oracle, and jobid listed in the example on that page you are following... here:

            https://docs.chain.link/docs/advanced-tutorial/#contract-example

Once you get that example working, then you can modify it for your usage. The jobid in that tutorial is for returning a (multiplied) uint256... which, for your API, I think is not what you want as you are wanting bytes32 it sounds like... so when you try to use it with your API that returns bytes32 the jobid would be: 7401f318127148a894c00c292e486ffd as seen here:

            https://docs.chain.link/docs/decentralized-oracles-ethereum-mainnet/

Another thing that might be your issue, is your api. You say you control what it returns... I think it might have to return a response in bytes format, like Patrick says in his response (and his comments on his response) here:

Get a string from any API using Chainlink Large Response Example

Hope this is helpful. If you cannot get the example in the chainlink docs to work, let me know.

Can AWS Lambda function call an endpoint over a VPN?
            Asked 2021-Dec-16 at 21:30

I'm using an SMS sending service provided by a local mobile carrier. The carrier enforces clients to connect to their datacentre over a VPN in order to reach their endpoints. The VPN tunnel must always be kept open (i.e. not on demand).

Currently, I'm using a micro EC2 instance that acts as middleware between my main production server (also an EC2 instance) and the carrier endpoint.

Production Server --> My SMS Server --over VPN--> Carrier SMS Server

Is there a way to replace my middleware server with an AWS Lambda function that sends HTTP requests to the carrier over an always-on VPN tunnel?

Also, can an AWS Lambda function maintain a static IP? The carrier has to place my IP in their whitelist before I can use their service.

s2svpn would be great but my question is can a lambda function HTTP request route through that connection?

Sure. Lambdas can have a VPC subnet attached. It's a matter of configuring the subnet routing table / VPN configuration to route the traffic to the carrier through the VPN endpoint.

Also, can an AWS Lambda function maintain a static IP?

No. Depends. A VPC-attached Lambda will create an eni (network interface) in the subnet with internal (not fixed) subnet iP address. But the traffic can be routed though a fixed NAT or a VPN gateway.

That's the reason I asked which IP address needs to be fixed, on what level. The VPN has a fixed IP address. If the carrier enforces the VPN address whitelisting, lambda clients should be working. If a fixed IP of the internal network is required then you will need a fixed network interface (e.g. using EC2)

You can use whitelist like any standard Python library. You will need to make sure that you have a development environment consisting of a Python distribution including header files, a compiler, pip, and git installed. Make sure that your pip, setuptools, and wheel are up to date. When using pip it is generally recommended to install packages in a virtual environment to avoid changes to the system.
