            AWS Elastic Beanstalk - Failing to install requirements.txt on deployment

            I have tried the similar problems' solutions on here but none seem to work. It seems that I get a memory error when installing tensorflow from requirements.txt. Does anyone know of a workaround? I believe that installing with --no-cache-dir would fix it but I can't figure out how to get EB to do that. Thank you.

            The error says MemoryError. You must upgrade your ec2 instance to something with more memory. tensorflow is very memory hungry application.

            I am trying to install conda on EMR and below is my bootstrap script, it looks like conda is getting installed but it is not getting added to environment variable. When I manually update the $PATH variable on EMR master node, it can identify conda. I want to use conda on Zeppelin.

            AWS Checking StateMachines/StepFunctions concurrent runs

            I am having a lot of issues handling concurrent runs of a StateMachine (Step Function) that does have a GlueJob task in it.

            The state machine is initiated by a Lambda that gets trigger by a FIFO SQS queue.

            The lambda gets the message, checks how many of state machine instances are running and if this number is below the GlueJob concurrent runs threshold, it starts the State Machine.

            The problem I am having is that this check fails most of the time. The state machine starts although there is not enough concurrency available for my GlueJob. Obviously, the message the SQS queue passes to lambda gets processed, so if the state machine fails for this reason, that message is gone forever (unless I catch the exception and send back a new message to the queue).

            I believe this behavior is due to the speed messages gets processed by my lambda (although it's a FIFO queue, so 1 message at a time), and the fact that my checker cannot keep up.

            I have implemented some time.sleep() here and there to see if things get better, but no substantial improvement.

            I would like to ask you if you have ever had issues like this one and how you got them programmatically solved.

            You are going to run into problems with this approach because the call to start a new flow may not immediately cause the list_executions() to show a new number. There may be some seconds between requesting that a new workflow start, and the workflow actually starting. As far as I'm aware there are no strong consistency guarantees for the list_executions() API call.

            You need something that is strongly consistent, and DynamoDB atomic counters is a great solution for this problem. Amazon published a blog post detailing the use of DynamoDB for this exact scenario. The gist is that you would attempt to increment an atomic counter in DynamoDB, with a limit expression that causes the increment to fail if it would cause the counter to go above a certain value. Catching that failure/exception is how your Lambda function knows to send the message back to the queue. Then at the end of the workflow you call another Lambda function to decrement the counter.

            I am writing a lambda function that takes a list of CW Log Groups and runs an "export to s3" task on each of them.

            I am writing automated tests using pytest and I'm using moto.mock_logs (among others), but create_export_tasks() is not yet implemented (NotImplementedError).

            To continue using moto.mock_logs for all other methods, I am trying to patch just that single create_export_task() method using mock.patch, but it's unable to find the correct object to patch (ImportError).

            I successfully used mock.Mock() to provide me just the functionality that I need, but I'm wondering if I can do the same with mock.patch()?

            As of writing this answer, the S3 multipart upload limitations page has the following table:

            Item Specification Maximum object size 5 TB Maximum number of parts per upload 10,000 Part numbers 1 to 10,000 (inclusive) Part size 5 MB to 5 GB. There is no minimum size limit on the last part of your multipart upload. Maximum number of parts returned for a list parts request 1000 Maximum number of multipart uploads returned in a list multipart uploads request 1000

            However, there is a subtle mistake. It says 5 MB instead of 5 MiB (and possibly 5 GB should actually be 5 GiB).

            Since you split the parts every 5 000 000 bytes (which are 5 MB but "only" ~4.77 MiB) both the first and second parts are smaller than the minimum size.

            You should instead split the parts every 5 242 880 (5 * 1024 ** 2) bytes (or even a bit [no pun intended] more just to be on the safe side).

            I have the same issue in my CI/CD using GitLab-CI. The awscli version 1.22.0 have this problem. I solved temporally the problem changed in my gitlab-ci file the line:

            pip install awscli --upgrade --user

            By:

            pip install awscli==1.21.12 --user

            Because when you call latest, the version that comes is 1.22.0

            The comment in your code gives me pause - "query = # prepare an INSERT query here". This seems to imply that you are reading the S3 data into Lambda and INSERTing the this data into Redshift. If so this is not a good pattern.

            First off Redshift expects data to be brought into the cluster through COPY (or Spectrum or ...) but not through INSERT. This will create issues in Redshift with managing the transactions and create a tremendous waste or disk space / need for VACUUM. The INSERT approach for putting data in Redshift is an anti-pattern and shouldn't be done for even moderate sizes of data.

            More generally the concern is the data movement impedance mismatch. Kinesis is lots of independent streams of data and code generating small files. Redshift is a massive database that works on large data segments. Mismatching these tools in a way that misses their designed targets will make either of them perform very poorly. You need to match the data requirement by batching up S3 into Redshift. This means COPYing many S3 files into Redshift in a single COPY command. This can be done with manifests or by "directory" structure in S3. "COPY everything from S3 path ..." This process of COPYing data into Redshift can be run every time interval (2 or 5 or 10 minutes). So you want your Kinesis Lambdas to organize the data in S3 (or add to a manifest) so that a "batch" of S3 files can be collected up for a COPY execution. This way a large number of S3 files can be brought into Redshift at once (its preferred data size) and will also greatly reduce your execute API calls.

            Now if you have a very large Kinesis pipe set up and the data is very large there is another data movement "preference" to take into account. This only matters when you are moving a lot of data per minute. This extra preference is for S3. S3 being an object store means that there is a significant amount of time taken up by "looking up" a requested object key. It is about .5 sec. So reading a thousand S3 objects will take 500 require (in total) 500 seconds of key lookup time. Redshift will make requests to S3 in parallel, one per slice in the cluster, so some of this time is in parallel. If the files being read are 1KB in size the data transfer of the data, after S3 lookup is complete, will be about 1.25 sec. total. Again this time is in parallel but you can see how much time is spent in lookup vs. transfer. To get the maximum bandwidth out of S3 for reading many files, these files need to be 1GB in size (100MB is ok in my experience). You can see if you are to ingest millions of files per minute from Kinesis into Redshift you will need a process to combine many small files into bigger files to avoid this hazard of S3. Since you are using Lambda as your Kinesis reader I expect that you aren't to this data rate yet but it is good to have your eyes on this issue if you expect to expand to a very large scale.

            Just because tools have high bandwidth doesn't mean that they can be piped together. Bandwidth comes in many styles.
