            I have asked a simpler version of this question before and got the correct answer: Thread pools not working with large number of tasks Now I am trying to run tasks from an object of a class in parallel using a thread pool. My task is simple and only prints a number for that instance of class. I am expecting numbers 0->9 get printed but instead I get some numbers get printed more than once and some numbers not printed at all. Can anyone see what I am doing wrong with creating tasks in my loop?

            I am trying to create a thread pool with native C++ and I am using the code listings from the book "C++ Concurrency in Action". The problem I have is that when I submit more work items than the number of threads, not all the work items get done. In the simple example below, I am trying to submit the runMe() function 200 times but the function is run only 8 times. It seems like this shouldn't happen because in the code, the work_queue is separate from the work threads. Here is the code:

            When pool is destroyed at the end of main, your destructor sets done, making your worker threads exit.

            You should make the destructor (or possibly main, if you want to make this optional) wait for the queue to drain before setting the flag.

            I'm trying to create a networking project using UDP connections. The server that I'm creating has to multithread in order to be able to receive multiple commands from multiple clients. However when trying to multithread the server, only one thread is running. Here is the code:

            The problem here is that you are calling the functions that should be the "body" of each thread when creating the Threads themselves. Upon executing the line thread_task = threading.Thread(target=task_putter()) Python will resolve first the expession inside the parentheses - it calls the function task_putter, which never returns. None of the subsequent lines on your program is ever run.

            What we do when creating threads, and other calls that takes callable objects as arguments, is to pass the function itself, not calling it (which will run the function and evaluate to its return value).

            Just change both lines creating the threads to not put the calling parentheses on the target= argument and you will get past this point:

            I have the following query in Postgres (emulating a work queue):

            We can see that the index scan returned 250692 rows in order to find 5000 to lock. So apparently we had to skip over 49 other queries worth of locked rows. That is not going to be very efficient, although if static it shouldn't be as slow as you see here. But it has to acquire a transient exclusive lock on a section of memory for each attempt. If it is fighting with many other processes for those locks, you can get a cascading collapse of performance.

            If you are launching 4 such statements per second with no cap and without waiting for any previous ones to finish, then you have an unstable situation. The more you have running at one time, the more they fight each other and slow down. If the completion rate goes down but the launch interval does not, then you just get more processes fighting with more other processes and each getting slower. So once you get shoved over the edge, it might never recover on its own.

            The role of concurrent insertions is probably just to provide enough noisy load on the system to give the collapse a chance to take a foothold. And of course without concurrent insertion, your deletes are doing to run out of things to delete pretty soon, at which point they will be very fast.

            I am attempting to put together some example code from a book.. but the book and the github copy are different.. I think I am close to having a working example of a threadpool which accepts functions and wraps them so you wait for their value to return as a future... but getting compilation errors around templating

            I've tried to instantiate the exact class I need at the end of the helloworld.cpp like told in

            Why can templates only be implemented in the header file?

            but then proceed to get a bunch of warnings about trying to imply a function which I had set as =delete already...

            I'm a bit new to C++ still so unsure how to best proceed , compilation error is at the end.. I have already tested thread_safe_queue.cpp and it worked in other simpler usages already so I don't believe it's at fault here... more so the templating is needing help

            lock-free "closable" MPSC queue

            Multiple producers single consumer scenario, except consumption happens once and after that the queue is "closed" and no more work is allowed. I have a MPSC queue, so I tried to add a lock-free algorithm to "close" the queue. I believe it's correct and it passes my tests. The problem is when I try to optimise memory order it stops working (I think work is lost, e.g. enqueued after the queue is closed). Even on x64 which has "kind of" strong memory model, even with a single producer.

            My attempt to fine-tune memory order is commented out:

            I think closed = true; does need to be seq_cst to make sure it's visible to other threads before you check producers_num the first time. Otherwise this ordering is possible:

            • producer: ++producers_num;
            • consumer: producers_num == 0
            • producer: if (!closed) finds it still open
            • consumer: close.store(true, release) becomes globally visible.
            • consumer: work_queue.pop(work) finds the queue empty
            • producer: work_queue.push(std::move(work)); adds work to the queue after consumer has stopped looking.

            You can still avoid seq_cst if you have the consumer check producers_num == 0 before returning, like
