QUESTION
I have a use-case for which I could use spring batch job which I could design in following ways.
1) First Way:
Step1 (Chunk oriented step): Read from the file —> filter, validate and transform the read row into DTO (data transfer object), if there are any errors, store errors in DTO itself —> Check if any of the DTOs has errors , if not write to Database. If yes, write to an error file.
However, problem with this way is - I need this entire JOB in transaction boundary. So if there is a failure in any of the chunks then I don’t want to write to DB and want to rollback all successful writes till that point in DB. Above way forces me to write rollback logic for all successful writes if there is a failure in any of the chunks.
2) Second way
Step 1 (Chunk oriented step): Read items from the file —> filter, validate and transform the read row in DTO (data transfer object). This does store the errors in the DTO object itself.
Step 2 (Tasklet): Read entire list (and not chunks) of DTOs created from step 1 —> Check if any of the DTOs has errors populated in it. If yes, then abort the writing to DB and fail the JOB.
In second way, I get all benefits of chunk processing and scaling. At the same time I have created transaction boundary for entire job.
PS: In both ways in their first step there won’t be any step failure, if there is failure; errors are stored in DTO object itself. Thus, DTO object is always created.
Question is - Since I am new to Spring batch, is it a good pattern to go with second way. And is there a way that I can share data between steps so that entire List of DTOs is available to second step (in second way above) ?

Answered 2021-Jun-04 at 07:10In my opinion, trying to process the entire file in a single transaction (ie a transaction at the job level) is not the way to go. I would proceed in two steps:
- Step 1: process the input and writes errors to the file
- Step 2: this step is conditioned by step1. If no errors has been detected in step 1, then save data to the db.
This approach does not require to write data to the database and roll it back if there are errors (as suggested by option 1 in your description). It only writes to the database when everything is ok.
Moreover, this approach does not require holding a list of items in-memory as suggested by option 2, which could be inefficient in terms of memory usage and performs poorly if the file is big.

I am trying to implement a Spring batch job where in order to process a record , it require 2-3 db calls which is slowing down the processing of records(size is 1 million).If I go with chunk based processing it would process each record separately and would be slow in performance. So, I need to process 1000 records in one go as bulk processing which would reduce the db calls and performance would increase. But my question is If I implement Tasklet then I would lose the functionality of restartability and retrial/skip features too and if implemented using AggregateInputReader I am not sure what would be the impact on restartability and transaction handling. As per the below thread AggregateReader should work but not sure its impact on transaction handling and restartability in case of failure:

. So if you do not want to enrich items one at a time in an ItemProcessor
, you can use that listener to do the enrichment for the entire chunk at once.

Looking for any suggestions on possible solutions for running a Spring Batch app deployed in Kubernetes to access directories on a server, run commands, etc.
This app has two Jobs & uses a host of Tasklets to perform work using linux commands on the server. The Tasklets replace the existing script files.
Job A : take the daily file located in a directory on the server, move the file between different directories(prep the file), finally encrypt the file on the server & SFTP the file to a vendor.
Job B : Retrieve an acknowledgment file from the vendor : when the ack file is available from the vendor, we retrieve the file via SFTP, move it around some directories on the server.
Seems to be a fairly straight forward process but how an application in Kubernetes accesses directories & runs commands on a server has not been so straight forward based on the research we have done.

Relying on the execution context to share data between multi-threaded steps is incorrect, because the keys will be overridden by concurrent threads. The reference documentation explicitly mentions to turn off state management in multi-threaded environment:

remember to use saveState=false if used in a multi-threaded client
- Reference doc:
it is not recommended to use job-scoped beans in multi-threaded or partitioned steps
That said, I don't see what key could be shared from a multi-threaded step to the next step (as threads are executed in parallel), but if you really need to do that, you should use another method like defining a shared bean that is thread safe.

I have a spring batch job. It processes a large number of items. For each item, it calls an external service (assume a stored procedure or a REST service. This does some business calculations and updates a database. These results are used to generate some analytical reports.). Each item is independent, so I am partitioning the external calls in 10 partitions in the same JVM. For example, if there are 50 items to process, each partition will have 50/10 = 5 items to process.
This external service can result a SUCCESS

return code. All the business logic is encapsulated in this external service and therefore worker step is a tasklet which just calls the external service and receives a SUCCESS

flag for each item and get them when job is over. These are the approaches I can think of:
- Each worker step can store the item and its

in a collection and store that in job execution context. Spring batch persists the execution context and I can retrieve it at the end of the job. This is the most naïve way, and causes thread contention when all 10 worker steps try to access and modify the same collection. - The concurrent exceptions in 1st approach can be avoided by using a concurrent collection like
CopyOnWriteArrayList
. But this is too costly and the whole purpose of partitioning is defeated when each worker step is waiting to access the list. - I can write the item ID and success/failure to an external table or message queue. This will avoid the issues in above 2 approaches but we are going out of spring bath framework to achieve this. I mean we are not using spring batch job execution context and using an external database or message queue.
Are there any better ways to do this?

In your case, one option is to consider an item as the PDF file (data) with its associated XML file (metadata). You can create a class that represents such an item and a custom item reader for it. Once that in place, you can use the reader in a chunk oriented step and a processor or writer that sends data to your REST endpoint.
