How to use select() to set a timer for sockets?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 21:17

I'm currently using Winsock2 to be able to test a connection to multiple local telnet servers, but if the server connection fails, the default Winsock client takes forever to timeout.

I've seen from other posts that select() can set a timeout for the connection part, and that setsockopt() with timeval can timeout the receiving portion of the code, but I have no idea how to implement either. Pieces of code that I've copy/pasted from other answers always seem to fail for me.

How would I use both of these functions in the default client code? Or, if it isn't possible to use those functions in the default client code, can someone give me some pointers on how to use those functions correctly?

select() can set a timeout for the connection part.

Yes, but only if you put the socket into non-blocking mode before calling connect(), so that connect() exits immediately and then the code can use select() to wait for the socket to report when the connect operation has finished. But the code shown is not doing that.

setsockopt() with timeval can timeout the receiving portion of the code

Yes, though select() can also be used to timeout a read operation, as well. Simply call select() first, and then call recv() only if select() reports that the socket is readable (has pending data to read).

Can I free mallocs that are being generated in every step of a recursion in C?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 20:53

I am making a simulation with C (for perfomance) that (currently) uses recursion and mallocs (generated in every step of the recursion). The problem is that I am not being able to free the mallocs anywhere in the code, without having the wrong final output. The code consist of two functions and the main function:

You're supposed to free memory right after the last time it will be used. In your program, after the while loop in recursion, Energy isn't used again, so you should free it right after that (i.e., right before return event_counter;).

Ok, but yours is an unnecessarily difficult approach. At each step of the merge process, you want half of your threads to wait for the other half to finish, and the most natural way for one thread to wait for another to finish is to use pthread_join(). If you wanted all of your threads to continue with more work after synchronizing then that would be different, but in this case, those that are not responsible for any more merges have nothing at all left to do.

            This is what I've tried:

GStreamer C library not working properly on Xubuntu
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 11:39

I am writing a program in C language using gtk3 library. I want it to be able to receive a h264 video stream from a certain IP address (localhost) and UDP/RTP PORT (5000).

In order to do it, I am using gstreamer to both stream and receive the video.

I managed to stream the video using the following pipeline :

            send.sh :

            gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=sample-mp4-file.mp4 ! decodebin ! x264enc ! 'video/x-h264, stream-format=(string)byte-stream' ! h264parse ! rtph264p

I managed to display the video in a new window using the following pipeline :

            receive.sh :

            gst-launch-1.0 udpsrc port=5000 caps="application/x-rtp,encoding-name=H264" ! rtph264depay ! decodebin ! videoconvert ! autovideosink

At this point, everything works fine. But now I want to receive the stream and display it inside my C/GTK program. I am using the following code (found on internet and adapted to make it compile) :

Here is the solution I found :

            Changin xvimagesink by ximagesink :

            sink = gst_element_factory_make ("xvimagesink", NULL); g_assert(sink);

            becomes

            sink = gst_element_factory_make ("ximagesink", NULL); g_assert(sink);

Hope it will help some of you facing the same problem.

TL;DR. You should check that the pointer returned by bpf_map_lookup_elem is not NULL.

With the following logs, the BPF verifier is telling you that, when it reaches the dereference of my_pid, the pointer may still have a NULL value. It thus contains a map value or a NULL value, i.e., map_value_or_null.

How do a sort a array of void* that points to places with names?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 02:51

Basically there are rectangles (buildings) and circles (people).

The task I need to do is basically, when a function "fg" is called, every circle that is inside a given radius needs to run to the closest rectangle, and after all the circles inside the radius finds a rectangle, I need to report on a .txt file the names of the circles that run to each rectangle sorted alphabetically.

            Such as:

            Rectangle A: c1 c2 c3

            Rectangle B: c7 c11 c20

            ...

            And so on...

I need to store the addresses of the circles that run, on a vector of each rectangle. I tried to use qsort from stdlib.h, but maybe the function that i use to compare is wrong

%f in scanf() is for reading float. You should use %lf to read double.

Note that you should use %f in printf() for printing double. Newer specification allows %lf for printf(), but %f should be better for compatibility.
