How to pass a list to an IN clause via a placeholder with Ruby Sequel
            Asked 2022-Apr-08 at 23:11

I am trying to pass a quoted list to a placeholder in an IN clause with Ruby Sequel.

            Answered 2022-Apr-08 at 06:05

I would use Sequel's query builder language instead of writing SQL manually which would look like this if you used default naming conventions:

Unable to find Databricks spark sql avro shaded jars in any public maven repository
            Asked 2022-Feb-19 at 15:54

We are trying to create avro record with confluent schema registry. The same record we want to publish to kafka cluster.

To attach schema id to each records (magic bytes) we need to use--
to_avro(Column data, Column subject, String schemaRegistryAddress)

To automate this we need to build project in pipeline & configure databricks jobs to use that jar.

Now the problem we are facing in notebooks we are able to find a methods with 3 parameters to it.
But the same library when we are using in our build downloaded from https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.apache.spark/spark-avro_2.12/3.1.2 its only having 2 overloaded methods of to_avro

Is databricks having some other maven repository for its shaded jars?

            Answered 2022-Feb-14 at 15:17

No, these jars aren't published to any public repository. You may check if the databricks-connect provides these jars (you can get their location with databricks-connect get-jar-dir), but I really doubt in that.

Another approach is to mock it, for example, create a small library that will declare a function with specific signature, and use it for compilation only, don't include into the resulting jar.

Local Delta Lake instance with advanced features
            Asked 2022-Feb-03 at 13:16

Is it possible to deploy a Delta Lake instance locally (i.e., using delta-io) with the advanced features such as Z-ordering or Bloom filters?

As far as I have seen, most of these features are only available through Delta Lake on Databricks via the dbr cli. None of these features are mentioned in the docs of the OSS version.

            Answered 2022-Feb-03 at 13:16

Unfortunately it's not possible - these features are Databricks only as of right now.

Update on 03.02.2022: Just published roadmap for H1 2022 includes implementation of some of the advanced features into the open source version

Load spark bucketed table from disk previously written via saveAsTable
            Asked 2022-Jan-17 at 20:54

            Version: DBR 8.4 | Spark 3.1.2

Spark allows me to create a bucketed hive table and save it to a location of my choosing.

            Answered 2022-Jan-14 at 00:02

You can use spark SQL to create that table in your catalog spark.sql("""CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS tbl...""") following this you can tell spark to rediscover data by running spark.sql("MSCK REPAIR TABLE tbl")

Copying a Range to a Worksheet with same Format
            Asked 2021-Dec-20 at 16:38

Hi I have an issue with my code. I'm creating 4 new sheets and I'm copying a table into each one (dbR) and a range Range("B8:K8") which is a header. I'm trying to maintain the format of this range while copying, but when I run this code, the row flickers and copies nothing without showing error. Is there something I'm missing? I'm fairly new so I expect my code looks quite poor.

How to avoid jar conflicts in a databricks workspace with multiple clusters and developers working in parallel?
            Asked 2021-Nov-18 at 14:32

We are working in an environment where multiple developers upload jars to a Databricks cluster with the following configuration:

            Answered 2021-Nov-13 at 15:43

You can't do with libraries packaged as Jar - when you install library, it's put into classpath, and will be removed only when you restart the cluster. Documentation says explicitly about that:

When you uninstall a library from a cluster, the library is removed only when you restart the cluster. Until you restart the cluster, the status of the uninstalled library appears as Uninstall pending restart.

It's the same issue as with "normal" Java programs, Java just doesn't support this functionality. See, for example, answers to this question.

For Python & R it's easier because they support notebook-scoped libraries, where different notebooks can have different versions of the same library.

P.S. If you're doing unit/integration testing, my recommendation would be to execute tests as Databricks jobs - it will be cheaper, and you won't have conflict between different versions.

How to configure a custom Spark Plugin in Databricks?
            Asked 2021-Nov-06 at 02:21

How to properly configure Spark plugin and the jar containing the Spark Plugin class in Databricks?

I created the following Spark 3 Plugin class in Scala, CustomExecSparkPlugin.scala:

            Answered 2021-Nov-06 at 02:21

You might consider adding this as an init script instead. The init scripts give you an opportunity to add jars to the cluster before spark even begins which is probably what the spark plugin is expecting.

            • Upload your jar to dbfs, somewhere like dbfs:/databricks/plugins
            • Create and upload a bash script like below to the same place.
            • Create / Edit a cluster with the init script specified.

Check if parquet file exists using scala
            Asked 2021-Oct-18 at 18:52

Posting similar question, as the existing thread is very old. I am using the below code to check if the file exists at target_path or not. Though the file is present I am getting return value as 'false'. Am I missing on some settings?

            Answered 2021-Oct-18 at 18:52

            You were very close :)

Below I use listStatus to give me back an array of status' of all of the files under pathToFolder, which would be the path to the folder containing the parquet file.

I then check the paths of each of the files under the folder too check for matches to target_path.
