What is the best practice of passing reference counted C++ objects to Lua?
            Asked 2021-Jun-16 at 02:17

I want to have my reference counted C++ object also managed in Lua callbacks: when it is held by a Lua variable, increase its refcount; and when the Lua variable is destroyed, release one refcount. It seems the releasing side can be automatically performed by __gc meta-method, but how to implement the increasing side?

Is it proper&enough to just increase refcount every time before adding the object to Lua stack?

Or maybe I should new a smart pointer object, use it everywhere in Lua C function, then delete it in __gc meta-method? This seems ugly as if something wrong with the Lua execution and the __gc is not called, the newed smart pointer object will be leaked, and the refcounted object it is referring would have leak one count.

In Perl that I'm more familiar with, this can be achieved by increase refcount at OUTPUT section of XS Map, and decrease refcount at destroyer.

I assume you have implemented two Lua functions in C: inc_ref_count(obj) and dec_ref_count(obj)

A-frame check variable with function and show different gltf depending on the value

I am wondering how I can create something like this using JavaScript and A-frame (https://aframe.io).

I would like to create an onload function called load() that will check the value of a variable x and if x is one, the gltf with the id of 1 will show and the gltf's with the id of 2 and 3 will not be visible. The same goes for gltf's 2 and 3. How can I acomplish this? My code:

Good way to switch between 2 versions of the same dependency in package.json?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 21:43

Turns out you can't have comments in JSON files, and it's a bit awkward to have people refer to some documentation telling them what line to copy/paste in and where in order to achieve this.

I think I can make a python script to copy/paste in one of two package.json files depending on what flags they pass in, but that feels overcomplicated.

I think I can include both dependencies (under different names) but that would create a requirement for both to be available, which is not good either.

Looking for ideas/thoughts on a good way to accomplish this. I have a release and dev version of the same dependency and I often need to swap between the two. Would like to improve the workflow beyond just having a notepad on the side with the two lines pasted in it...

Ok, but yours is an unnecessarily difficult approach. At each step of the merge process, you want half of your threads to wait for the other half to finish, and the most natural way for one thread to wait for another to finish is to use pthread_join(). If you wanted all of your threads to continue with more work after synchronizing then that would be different, but in this case, those that are not responsible for any more merges have nothing at all left to do.

            This is what I've tried:

            How to thread a generator
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 16:02

I have a generator object, that loads quite big amount of data and hogs the I/O of the system. The data is too big to fit into memory all at once, hence the use of generator. And I have a consumer that all of the CPU to process the data yielded by generator. It does not consume much of other resources. Is it possible to interleave these tasks using threads?

For example I'd guess it is possible to run the simplified code below in 11 seconds.

Differnces between __execute-count value and values gathered by the Metrics Reporting API v2
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 15:18

I have run a topology, and I used the Meter type in metric Reporting API v2. In the execute method I mark this metric. So it will mark an event whenever the execute method is called. But when I compare this value with the __execute-count, I see huge differences. Does anyone know why this happens?

These are the values from my log which are gathered at the same time:

            9:v7 __execute-count {v0:v7=44500}
            9:v7 tuple_inRate.count 664129

Update: When I use the mark method on the Meter metric, I will get different results in comparison with the Counter metric. But still, I do not understand why the values from the counter metric (tuple counter) are not the same as the __execute-count.

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-11 at 06:51

As given in this answer, Storms Internal Metrics are just estimated by a percentage of the real data flow. Initially, it uses 5% of incoming tuples to make those estimations. This may lead to inaccuracies for extreme high or low throughputs.

EDIT: The documentation describes the following:

In general all of these tuple count metrics are randomly sub-sampled unless otherwise stated. This means that the counts you see both on the UI and from the built in metrics are not necessarily exact. In fact by default we sample only 5% of the events and estimate the total number of events from that. The sampling percentage is configurable per topology through the topology.stats.sample.rate config. Setting it to 1.0 will make the counts exact, but be aware that the more events we sample the slower your topology will run (as the metrics are counted in the same code path as tuples are processed). This is why we have a 5% sample rate as the default.

EDIT 2 In this post, there is more information about the estimation:

The way it works is that if you choose a sampling rate of 0.05, it will pick a random element of the next 20 events in which to increase the count by 20. So if you have 20 tasks for that bolt, your stats could be off by +-380.

By the way, execute_count is just an increasing number, while your tuple_inRate.count is a rate, isn`t it?

How to create a working VHDX in Azure CI Build Pipeline?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 14:26

This question is related to Azure MSIX Build and Package task only has Release and Debug configurations

We have a WinForms project that has an MSIX installer. Manually, we can successfully create

            1. An MSIXBUNDLE and deploy it to Kudu
            2. An MSIX and deploy it to an Azure VM through a VHDX. We have manually convert the MSIX to a VHDX first

We are now trying to automate the build and release process to create the VHDX. However, we are getting a blank screen when the VHDX is mounted using a process that we have already validated. The only thing different is the build method (i.e., MSBuild versus VS Publish).

How do we create a working VHDX in Azure CI Build Pipeline?

            Below is the YAML.

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 14:26

Actually, there is nothing wrong with the YAML. The problem was a delay in the virtual machine loading the VHDX. In other words, wait about 5 minutes once the VHDX is mounted before trying to run the application. I am leaving this here in case anyone else runs into this issue.
