State update not reflecting in custom hook
            Asked 2021-Oct-31 at 02:37

I am using react-redux to store a state modeData which is an array of objects. Using react-hotkeys-hook, when the user presses ctrl+l, a function runs which updates the state. In that same function, when I console.log the same state, it does not reflect the changes.
            Here's the code I'm using:

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Oct-31 at 02:37

Your code needs to use the latest version of modeData, but based on the source code of useHotkeys, it will memoize the function, and not update it automatically. So you're always using the version of the callback that existed on the first render.

To fix this, you need to pass a dependency array in to useHotkeys, so it can break the memoization:

Spectron app.start() isn't launching the app
            Asked 2021-Sep-08 at 20:05

I'm relatively new to Spectron and Jest and I can't figure out why the app isn't launching when I call app.start() in my unit test. Right now when I run npm test, the app won't start, eventually times out (even after 30 seconds) and always sends this error message:

Timeout - Async callback was not invoked within the 15000 ms timeout specified by jest.setTimeout.Error: Timeout - Async callback was not invoked within the 15000 ms timeout specified by jest.setTimeout. at mapper (node_modules/jest-jasmine2/build/queueRunner.js:27:45)

            So far I've tried:

            • making sure I'm using the correct versions of spectron and electron (11.0.0 and 9.0.0 respectively)
            • running npm test from my root folder, my src folder, and my tests folder.
            • deleting my node_modules folder, reinstalling everything, and rebuilding the app.
            • using path.join(__dirname, '../../', 'node_modules', '.bin', 'electron') as my app.path.

            Here's my test1.js file:

I came across this Spectron tutorial on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srBKdQT51UQ

It was published in September 2020 (almost a year ago as of the time of this post) and they suggested downgrading to electron 8.0.0 and Spectron 10.0.0. When I downgraded, the app magically launched when app.start was called.

Jest won't use the babel plugins out of the box, you need to install some additional packages.

            With yarn:

            yarn add --dev babel-jest babel-core regenerator-runtime

            With npm:

            npm install babel-jest babel-core regenerator-runtime --save-dev

Jest should then pick up the configuration from your .babelrc or babel.config.js.

It can be done using the handleSubmit method for react-hook-forms. The mistake that is made is that handleSubmit is a callback, hence it needs to be called like this.

useHotkeys internals use the useCallback and useEffect hooks, which need to know when some of its dependencies change. To make sure it works well with these hooks, useHotkeys offers to pass a deps array, like the other hooks mentioned, as its last parameter.

deps: any[] = []: The dependency array that gets appended to the memoization of the callback. Here you define the inner dependencies of your callback. If for example your callback actions depend on a referentially unstable value or a value that will change over time, you should add this value to your deps array. Since most of the time your callback won't depend on any unstable callbacks or changing values over time you can leave this value alone since it will be set to an empty array by default.

In your code, it would looks like this:

Varying number of hooks for keyboard shortcuts
            Asked 2020-Jul-16 at 12:32

I have a react component that has multiple choices. I've associated to each choice a shortcut. For that I'm using "react-hotkeys-hook".

So answer first answer has shortcut 1, second answer has answer 2 and so on.

The thing is, after answering, I update the view to show another question that can have a different number of choices. This makes the hooks blow up because the number of hooks varied from render to render.

You can't have a dynamic call of hooks due to Rules of Hooks, the better approach is using composition.

Your Choice component should have a hotKey and callback props, the parent should dictate the number of choices.

            1. You need to use Control+s, not ctrl+s.
            2. You need to call configure like that so it won't ignore textareas:

Perhaps the issue is related to the react-scripts version, you are using react-scripts 3.3.0 and higher. You could check the package.json file to verify it.

There are some thread reports this error in GitHub, you could refer to them, for example: github.com/facebook/create-react-app/issues/8197, github.com/facebook/create-react-app/issues/8195.

As a workaround, you could try to downgrade the react-scripts version. As far as I know, it can still work with react-scripts@3.2.0.
