Why do Switch and ListView controls in MAUI not update with 2-way binding?
            Asked 2022-Apr-11 at 09:33

This question is about two MAUI controls (Switch and ListView) - I'm asking about them both in the same question as I'm expecting the root cause of the problem to be the same for both controls. It's entirely possible that they're different problems that just share some common symptoms though. (CollectionView has similar issues, but other confounding factors that make it trickier to demonstrate.)

I'm using 2-way data binding in my MAUI app: changes to the data can either come directly from the user, or from a background polling task that checks whether the canonical data has been changed elsewhere. The problem I'm facing is that changes to the view model are not visually propagated to the Switch.IsToggled and ListView.SelectedItem properties, even though the controls do raise events showing that they've "noticed" the property changes. Other controls (e.g. Label and Checkbox) are visually updated, indicating that the view model notification is working fine and the UI itself is generally healthy.

Build environment: Visual Studio 2022 17.2.0 preview 2.1
App environment: Android, either emulator "Pixel 5 - API 30" or a real Pixel 6

The sample code is all below, but the fundamental question is whether this a bug somewhere in my code (do I need to "tell" the controls to update themselves for some reason?) or possibly a bug in MAUI (in which case I should presumably report it)?

            Sample code

The sample code below can be added directly a "File new project" MAUI app (with a name of "MauiPlayground" to use the same namespaces), or it's all available from my demo code repo. Each example is independent of the other - you can try just one. (Then update App.cs to set MainPage to the right example.)

Both examples have a very simple situation: a control with two-way binding to a view-model, and a button that updates the view-model property (to simulate "the data has been modified elsewhere" in the real app). In both cases, the control remains unchanged visually.

Note that I've specified {Binding ..., Mode=TwoWay} in both cases, even though that's the default for those properties, just to be super-clear that that isn't the problem.

The ViewModelBase code is shared by both examples, and is simply a convenient way of raising INotifyPropertyChanged.PropertyChanged without any extra dependencies:

These both may be bugs with the currently released version of MAUI.

This bug was recently posted and there is already a fix for the Switch to address this issue.

Known bug on the Apache Kafka side. Nothing to do from Spring perspective. See more info here: https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-kafka/discussions/2027. And here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-13391

You need to wait until Apache Kafka 3.0.1 or don't use embedded Kafka and just rely on the Testcontainers, for example, or fully external Apache Kafka broker.

PEP 660 – Editable installs for pyproject.toml based builds defines how to build projects that only use pyproject.toml. Build tools must implement PEP 660 for editable installs to work. You need a front-end (such as pip ≥ 21.3), backend. The statuses of some popular backends are:

Apple developer Quinn “The Eskimo!” @ Developer Technical Support @ Apple answered this question here:

This is not an error per se. Rather, it’s the Objective-C runtime telling you that:

            • Two frameworks within your process implement the same class (well, in this case classes, namely _PathPoint and _PointQueue).
            • The runtime will use one of them, choosing it in an unspecified way.

This can be bad but in this case it’s not. Both of the implementations are coming from the system (well, the simulated system) and thus you’d expect them to be in sync and thus it doesn’t matter which one the runtime uses.

So, in this specific case, these log messages are just log noise.

            Asked 2022-Feb-09 at 18:46

            A simple question: is enum { a } e = 1; valid?

In other words: does assigning a value, which isn't present in the set of values of enumeration constants, lead to well-defined behavior?

            Demo:

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2022-Feb-05 at 14:09

From the C18 standard in 6.7.2.2:

Each enumerated type shall be compatible with char, a signed integer type, or an unsigned integer type. The choice of type is implementation-defined, but shall be capable of representing the values of all the members of the enumeration.

So yes enum { a } e = 1; is valid. e is a 'integer' type so it can take the value 1. The fact that 1 is not present as an enumeration value is no issue. The enumeration members only give handy identifiers for some of possible values.

Resolution of built-in operator == overloads
            Asked 2022-Jan-21 at 19:00

In the following code struct A has two implicit conversion operators to char and int, and an instance of the struct is compared for equality against integer constant 2:

            ANSWER

            Answered 2022-Jan-21 at 19:00

This is CWG 507. An example similar to yours was given, and the submitter explained that according to the standard, the overload resolution is ambiguous, even though this result is very counter-intuitive.

Translating to your particular example, when comparing operator==(int, int) and operator==(float, int) to determine which is the better candidate, we have to determine which one has the better implicit conversion sequence for the first argument (obviously in the second argument, no conversion is required). For the first argument of operator==(int, int), we just use A::operator int. For the first argument of operator==(float, int), there is no way to decide whether to use A::operator int or A::operator char, so we get the "ambiguous conversion sequence". The overload resolution rules say that the ambiguous conversion sequence is no better or worse than any other user-defined conversion sequence. Therefore, the straightforward conversion from A{} to int (via A::operator int) is not considered better than the ambiguous conversion from A{} to float. This means neither operator== candidate is better than the other.

Clang is apparently following the letter of the standard whereas GCC and MSVC are probably doing something else because of the standard seeming to be broken here. "Which compiler is right" depends on your opinion about what the standard should say. There is no proposed resolution on the issues page.

I would suggest removing operator char unless you really, really need it, in which case you will have to think about what else you're willing to give up.
