            What is the correct way to handle a "mutex-like" lock for a mpi4py function call?

            I have a function call in python which uses a package method that is non-thread safe (The package writes to three temporary files which have the same name). As the data needed to pass into this method are large and I have numerous input sets, I am approaching this from a distributed perspective, using the MPI4PY library, such that each rank handles a different group of input data at any given time. My problem is that when mapping calls to this function through MPI there are occasions where multiple ranks try to access the function call at once leading to a thread-race condition where data are being overwritten by two calls to the function at once (And then causing the script to error out).

            Since the package method is non-thread safe, my question is how would I perform a mutex-style lock on the function such that only one MPI rank is allowed to work inside the function at a time:

            Why do I have to call MPI.Finalize() inside the destructor?

            I'm currently trying to understand mpi4py. I set mpi4py.rc.initialize = False and mpi4py.rc.finalize = False because I can't see why we would want initialization and finalization automatically. The default behavior is that MPI.Init() gets called when MPI is being imported. I think the reason for that is because for each rank a instance of the python interpreter is being run and each of those instances will run the whole script but that's just guessing. In the end, I like to have it explicit.

            The way you wrote it, data_gen lives until the main function returns. But you call MPI.Finalize within the function. Therefore the destructor runs after finalize. The h5py.File.close method seems to call MPI.Comm.Barrier internally. Calling this after finalize is forbidden.

            If you want have explicit control, make sure all objects are destroyed before calling MPI.Finalize. Of course even that may not be enough in case some objects are only destroyed by the garbage collector, not the reference counter.

            To avoid this, use context managers instead of destructors.

            My solution was to alter the Send part in my sample code as follows: comm.Send([np.frombuffer(matrix.data, np.intc, offset=4), 1, column], 1)

            After experimenting, I have found that Send has problems reading from memory buffer when it's given as matrix[0,1]. We have to explicitly tell it to read from memory held by matrix (matrix.data part) and give an offset into that memory. As numpy by default stores the data in C order, we have to move 4 bytes ahead.

            In the Arbor simulator one can specify whether to record no, local, or all spikes when working with distributed MPI simulations. Are there any reasons to record locally on each MPI and broadcasting results versus recording all spikes on just 1 rank with a rank check?

            There's no advantage to recording only local spikes, if they are then going to be broadcast to all ranks for collation. Due to the design of the Arbor simulator's spike exchange, each node has access to all the spikes regardless.

            Recording only local spikes can be useful if your program is set up to deal with node-local data on each node, or for writing the spike data to disk say in parallel to separate files.

            First off, add: import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

            Get rid of everything below the line image = executor.map(...) and replace it with:
