Object metadata keys are lowercased when uploading to GCS with Apache Libcloud
            Asked 2020-Dec-18 at 09:26

I'm using Apache Libcloud to upload files to a Google Cloud Storage bucket together with object metadata.

In the process, the keys in my metadata dict are being lowercased. I'm not sure whether this is due to Cloud Storage or whether this happens in Libcloud.

The issue can be reproduced following the example from the Libcloud docs:

I also checked the library and wasn't able to see anything obvious. But I guess to open a new issue there will be a great start.

As far as what's concerned on the Google Cloud Storage side, and as you could verify by yourself it does admit camelcase. I was able to successfully edit the metadata of a file by using the code offered on their public docs (but wasn't able to figure out something on libcloud itself):

            Apt-get with Packer randomly failing
            Asked 2020-Oct-06 at 13:16

I'm using Packer to build an ami with a file ami.json that runs two provisioners built off the default Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS image. The problem is Packer build randomly fails on apt-get install ansible with the error E: Unable to locate package ansible. The same ami.json file builds or doesn't build intermittently despite zero changes.

It seems potentially related to this question from 5 years ago that got a workaround but not a real answer: Packer/Amazon EBS/Ubuntu - Inconsistent PPAs

Try to add a 10 min sleep as the first provisioner. Ubuntu AMIs come with automatic updates on. So, whenever an instance is started, It will get updated itself.

libcloud and GCP. How to autheticate using service account
            Asked 2019-Nov-04 at 16:17

I am trying to use Apache libcloud to access GCP and hopefully be able to launch compute instances. So, following the documentation, I have created a service account on GCP associated with my email and given it the owner access for the moment. After that, I am using libcloud as follows:

From the Console (https://cloud.google.com/console), select your project. When your project is open, select "APIs & auth" and then "Credentials" as shown below:

In Development: Preferably make one for each, could use one for all for testing purposes.

In production: For each user to use this service, create a service account.

When you download the service account, you should have it as a .pem or .json file. Use the email address from the service account (if you open the json/pem you shd be able to see the email) and give it the correct values region/project/email and path to the pem file.

The code you're using is correct, avoid using the name "ComputeEngine" since it may be a keyword (even though it probably isn't, best practice)

I got the following error while trying to push my Django app to Heroku: TomlDecodeError("Invalid date or number")
            Asked 2018-Oct-03 at 03:50

When I git push my Django app to Heroku, I get the error below. How do I know what needs to be changed in my code from this error? I'm not sure which date information I misconfigured to raise this error. If you could point me in the right direction, that would be great! My Pipfile.lock settings does say python 3.6.4 when I am using python 3.6.3. Could that be the problem? Is there a way to update Python without having to reinstall all of my stuff?

GCP deploy instance fails from ansible script
            Asked 2018-Apr-09 at 08:24

I've been deploying clusters in GCP via ansible scripts for more then a year now, but all of a sudden one of my scripts keeps giving me this error:

libcloud.common.google.GoogleBaseError: u\"The zone 'projects/[project]/zones/europe-west1-d' does not have enough resources available to fulfill the request. Try a different zone, or try again later.

The obvious reason would be that I don't have enough resources, but not a whole lot has changed and quotas look good:

The ansible script itself doesn't ask for a lot. I'm creating 3 instances of n1-standard-4 with 100GB SSD. See snippet of script below:

            Answered 2018-Apr-09 at 08:24

The error message is not showing that is an error with the quota, but rather an issue with the zone resources, I would advise you to try a new zone.

            Quoting from the documentation:

Even if you have a regional quota, it is possible that a resource might not be available in a specific zone. For example, you might have quota in region us-central1 to create VM instances, but might not be able to create VM instances in the zone us-central1-a if the zone is depleted. In such cases, try creating the same resource in another zone, such as us-central1-f.

Therefore when creating the script you should take this possibility into account even if it is not so common.

This issue is even more highlithed in case of preentible instances since:

Preemptible instances are finite Compute Engine resources, so they might not always be available. [...] these instances if it requires access to those resources for other tasks. Preemptible instances are excess Compute Engine capacity so their availability varies with usage.

            UPDATE

To doublecheck what I am saying you can try to keep the preentible flag and change the zone to be sure the script it is working properly and it is a stockout happening during the evening (and since during the day it works this should be the case).

            • If the issue it is really the availability -| you might consider to spin up preentible instance and if not available, catch the error and then either rely on normal one or on a different zone |-
            UPDATE2

As I promised I created on your behalf the feature request, you can follow the updates on the public tracker. I advise you to start it in order to receive the updates on the email:

To answer my own question, the specific issue seen above was due to the system I was using. Once I switched to another system it proceeded even further however there is a bug I identified and filed in apache libcloud with a documented workaround inside the jira ticket here https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LIBCLOUD-972.

            Install libcloud

You can download it from GitHub.
You can use libcloud like any standard Python library. You will need to make sure that you have a development environment consisting of a Python distribution including header files, a compiler, pip, and git installed. Make sure that your pip, setuptools, and wheel are up to date. When using pip it is generally recommended to install packages in a virtual environment to avoid changes to the system.
