What is the best practice of passing reference counted C++ objects to Lua?
            Asked 2021-Jun-16 at 02:17

I want to have my reference counted C++ object also managed in Lua callbacks: when it is held by a Lua variable, increase its refcount; and when the Lua variable is destroyed, release one refcount. It seems the releasing side can be automatically performed by __gc meta-method, but how to implement the increasing side?

Is it proper&enough to just increase refcount every time before adding the object to Lua stack?

Or maybe I should new a smart pointer object, use it everywhere in Lua C function, then delete it in __gc meta-method? This seems ugly as if something wrong with the Lua execution and the __gc is not called, the newed smart pointer object will be leaked, and the refcounted object it is referring would have leak one count.

In Perl that I'm more familiar with, this can be achieved by increase refcount at OUTPUT section of XS Map, and decrease refcount at destroyer.

Excel: Display collection of month names generated from start and end date?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 22:30

I am trying to generate a table to record articles published each month. However, the months I work with different clients vary based on the campaign length. For example, Client A is on a six month contract from March to September. Client B is on a 12 month contract starting from February.

Rather than creating a bespoke list of the relevant months each time, I want to automatically generate the list based on campaign start and finish.

Here's a screenshot to illustrate how this might look:

Below is an example of expected output from the above, what I would like to achieve:

Currently, the only month that's generated is the last one. And it goes into A6 (I would have hoped A5, but I feel like I'm trying to speak a language using Google Translate, so...).

The idea is that in the first column, one could write down the name of the item when it arrives, which would automatically put the date it arrived in the second column. Then when that item is sold, that would be recorded in the third column, which would automatically add the sell date into the fourth column. However, only the third column is working while the first does not input a date anymore

How to test all possible iterations in a multiple linear regresion and return the best R-Squared and P values combination
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 20:33

I am trying to get the best combination to reach the best R Squared and P value. In this case, I have 6 columns to run the code, but I have the R-Squared and P values just for this combo ([col0, col1, col2, col3, col4, col5] vs [col6]). I want to test all the possible combinations, something like:

            [col0] vs [col6]

            [col0 + col1] vs [col6]

            [col0 + col1 + col2] vs [col6]...

Is there any way to automatize this? So I dont have to run all possible combinations on hand.

Coalescing multiple chunks of columns with the same suffix in names (R)
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 20:10

I have a dataset with various "chunks" of columns with different prefixes, but the same suffix:

            ID A034 B034 C034 D034 A099 B099 A123 B123 ... 1 NA 1 NA NA NA 3 1 NA ... 2 2 NA NA NA 2 NA NA 2 ... 3 NA NA 2 NA NA 2 1 NA ...

The number of columns within each "chunk" also varies. Is there any way (other than manually, which is what I have been painstakingly doing with coalesce(!!! select(., contains("XXX")))) to automatically coalesce by chunk based on the shared suffix? That is, the result should resemble

            ID 034 099 123 ... 1 1 3 1 ... 2 2 2 2 ... 3 2 2 1 ...

I'm not sure how to begin doing something like this, so any suggestions would be very helpful.

We reshape the data into 'long' format with pivot_longer, then we group by 'ID' and loop across the other columns, apply the na.omit to remove the NA elements (we assume that there is only one non-NA per each column by group)

There are several points to correct in your code:

            • You need to return a Promise when all the asynchronous job is completed. See this doc for more details.
            • If you use the await keyword, you need to declare the function async, see here.
            • A QuerySnapshot has a forEach() method
            • You can get the DocumentReference of a doc from the QuerySnapshot just by using the ref property.

The following should therefore do the trick:

Divide every value in one column by the largest value based on the values of another column (subject)
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 19:59

I have a data list with a subject column and a size column like the sample data below. For each subject, I need to divide every value in the size column by the largest value so that the range between size values will be 0 - 1.

Take the sample data below as example, I need to divide every size value for subject 1 by 9 and divide every size value for subject by 8.

As there are a lot of subjects in my real data, is there any approach that I can do this for each subject automatically?

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 19:45

The little lighter colored "ct" prompt is just a visual aid and it does not always show up. When you provide a raw value as an argument, it will show the prompt (like this, 1, or "foo"). When you provide a variable for the argument like ctx, foo, etc, it does not show up. This goes for all functions that take arguments.

The moral of the story is, it is not important and can be ignored.

            Meaning of Compile-Time?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 19:35

My Question: What exactly does “compile-time” mean? I present my understanding below and where I am getting confused.

Compilation is the process that generates a single executable .exe file from the .vb file. There are several ways to do this, for example by using the VBC.EXE command from the developer command window or MSDOS. The way I understand “compile-time” is that it is time when such a command gets executed and the exe file is generated. The following are the what I find confusing:

            1. When I write Dim i = 5, the compiler infers or “knows” that the variable “i” is an integer.
            2. If I want to print an integer or a string using the Writeline method of the console class then the compiler automatically determines which overloaded version it should call. So in this case also the compiler “knows” – this is also known as compile-time polymorphism.

My confusion: Since in both the above cases the compiler infers or knows the type of variable or the version of the overloaded method to call just after we have finished typing the sentence, is this also called compile-time? We have not given any sort of compilation command here.

            1. Another confusion on the definition of compile-time refers to the case when we explicitly define overloaded methods. In the case of the writeline method, we know from the pop-up given by intellisense that immediately after we have finished typing the sentence the version with the correct signature is called. Now, when we define overloaded methods does the compiler know which version to call when we call the function (depending on signature) somewhere in the program right after we have finished typing the code? Or does the compiler know this after the exe file has been generated? This is a case of compile-time polymorphism. But then which time or which step is the “compile-time”?
            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 19:35

We have not given any sort of compilation command here.

No, but most modern IDEs can do similar "static analysis" that compilers do to determine types, etc. Some even do a very lightweight "compile" to determine what overloads are appropriate, etc.

Also note that IDEs and the actual compiler may not always agree. IDE analysis is designed to be very fast, so the analysis done by the IDE may be less robust and less accurate than a static compiler.

So in a sense these are all "compile-time" in that the only information that is available is what is present in the code. This is opposed to "run-time" where other factors such as user input, environment, and state can change the flow and interpretation of the program in ways that the compiler could not account for.

Meson / Ninja build system - How to run custom script at Uninstall?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 18:46

Meson/Ninja provide an easy method to run a script at install time.
For example, this line will tell Meson to run the glib-compile-schemas command to compile the GSettings on Linux (system configuration options).

            meson.add_install_script('glib-compile-schemas', schemas_dir)
(this command will be automatically run when the user executes ninja install)

How can I tell Meson to run a custom command at uninstall?
In this specific case I would like to delete (or at least reset to default) the key-value pairs in GSettings. To reset them, I have found that the command is gsettings reset-recursively (successfully tested in terminal).

Adding custom uninstall script is still being discussed, it's proposed quite some time ago but not yet implemented. It looks this task is typically left for package manager (and therefore to corresponding packaged scripts).

But I agree, there is some illogical asymmetry in case of meson install command. As a workaround, you can create your own target:
