We collect system metrics via collectd. But how easy is it to use those for alerting. m = (load avg)/(number of cpu). and then do something like the following for alerting. if m > 1 for the past x minutes send an alert. Now doing that dynamically via the /render api is not easy especially with complex graphite metric namespace. All the above led me to write a simple python collectd plugin to export the following metrics which can be easily alerted upon.
