It doesn't look like you are following the jupyter-scala directions for using Spark. You have to load spark into the kernel using the special imports.

Figured out what was the problem:

JDK 8 should be used instead of JDK 9.

Setting Java 8 in $JAVA_HOME solved the problem by adding the following line to ~/.profile.
