QUESTION
Summary
I have a DynamoDB table with less than ten items that I am trying index with CloudSearch. The CloudSearch indexer suggests a non-existent attribute named "l"
. This appears to be somehow sourced from the DynamoDB JSON "list" key (which stores an array of list objects, in my case, all strings). Regardless, even if I remove this key at index field configuration time, I still get the following hard error at document upload time:

types are not supported by CloudSearch. There is an open request to add them but "there is no ETA on when they will be supported". A suggested alternative is to use String Set
in place of a list of strings which should work for my use case.
QUESTION
I am trying to get a largest value of a primary key (id
in a particular case) using boto3.
Table structure:
| id | name |
|-----|-------|
| 1 | Bob |
| 4 | Alice |
| 5 | Eve |
where id
is a primary key (hash key) and there is no sort key (range key).
As a result, I should get 5 (the id
largest value).
I have looked thought docs and this answer but didn't find an answer.
ScanIndexForward
attribute from table.scan()
method requires sort key. table.query()
method requires condition (such as Key={"name":"Bob"}
).
The id
value is not autoincrementing (table may have missing id
values) that is why this solution doesn't help.
Question: Is it possible to get largest id
from a table without sort key? (Of course, I do not want to scan all table and find it using python.)

Answered 2018-Nov-03 at 13:45It's probably not what you want to hear- but you can't do this using table operations directly.
Dynamo gives you a lot of constraints in the name of making a scalable system. And most of these surround the options you have for querying; offering more of a key'd document store then a traditional database (further discussion about using scan with some, dubious, suggestions).
I suggest you take a look at the way you need to access your data and consider your schema design within the limits of partition/sort/indexes.
For situations like this (e.g. when you need to derive a property from the table), an architectural pattern you can use is:

Answered 2018-Sep-04 at 15:51This is more of a comment than an answer, but here it goes: No - you can’t get the answer you are looking for with a scan. There is no way to craft a filter and even if there were, you’d still be paying for the full price of a scan (though you’d be saving on network bandwidth).
Your options are:
Use the technique you are using: get the unique Ids and then iterate and query with limit 1
Use two tables: one to hold the historical values and one to hold the most recent value for each item
Note that in the second example there are some caveats: you have to be tolerant of eventual consistency; and you must not update any of the items more than 1000 times per second (though the practical limit is realistically lower - maybe 6-700)

I am asking this in context of loading data from DynamoDb into Redshift. Per the Redshift Docs:
To avoid consuming excessive amounts of provisioned read throughput, we recommend that you not load data from Amazon DynamoDB tables that are in production environments.
My data is in Production, so how do I get it out of there?
Alternately is DynamoDB Streams a better overall choice to move data from DynamoDB into Redshift? (I understand this does not add to my RCU cost.)

Answered 2017-Nov-13 at 20:33Using AWS Data pipeline, you can do a bulk copy data from DynamoDB to a new or existing Redshift table.
