            Connection to CosmosDB through Mongo API fails after idle

            We have a Scala server which uses the Java MongoDB driver as wrapped by Casbah. Recently, we switched its database over from an actual MongoDB to Azure CosmosDB, using the Mongo API. This is generally working fine, however every once in a while a call to Cosmos fails with a MongoSocketWriteException (stack trace below).

            The problem went away after we added &maxIdleTimeMS=1500000 to the connection URI in order to set the maximum connection idle time to 25 minutes.

            The cause seems to be a timeout of 30 minutes for idle connections on the Azure server, while the default behaviour for Mongo clients is no idle timeout at all. The server does not communicate the fact that it is dropping an idled connection back to the client, so that the next attempt at using it fails with the above error. Setting the maximum connection idle time to a value less than 30 minutes makes our server close idle connections before the Azure server kills them. Some sort of keep-alive or check before using a connection would probably also be possible.

            I haven't actually been able to find any documentation about this or other references to this problem for CosmosDB, although it may be caused by or related to the 30 minute idle timeout for TCP connections for Azure Internal Load Balancers (see e.g. https://feedback.azure.com/forums/217313-networking/suggestions/18823588-increase-idle-timeout-on-internal-load-balancers-t).

            i am writing the json data from Kafka structured streaming to a filepath and when i do it from shell i am able to do it. When i compile it to a jar and do a spark2-submit only the _spark_metadata creates and no data is found

            i tried doing it from shell and i was able to see the json files in the filepath. I compile the program using "sbt clean package" and then try to run using spark-submit it wont create any data.

            tl;dr: you cannot use Scala 2.12 because Spark does not support it yet and you also need to use %% when specifying dependencies to avoid problems with incorrect binary versions. Read below for more explanation.

            Scala versions like 2.x are binary incompatible, therefore all libraries have to be compiled separately for each such release (2.10, 2.11 and 2.12 being the currently used ones, although 2.10 is on its route to being legacy). That's what _2.12 an _2.11 suffixes are about.

            Naturally, you cannot use libraries compiled for a different version of Scala than the one you're currently using. So if you set your scalaVersion to, say, 2.12.1, you cannot use libraries with names suffixed by _2.11. This is why it is possible to write either "groupName" % "artifactName" and "groupName" %% "artifactName": in the latter case, when you use double percent sign, the current Scala binary version will be appended to the name automatically:

            Spark RDD to new MongoDB collection with index in Scala

            Inside of a spark-submit job (.JAR written in Scala), I need to access an existing MongoDB, create a new collection in the db, add an index, write data from an RDD distributed over 1,000's of executors to the collection.

            I can't find one library that can do all of this. Right now, I'm using mongo-spark-connector to write from RDD, and then I use casbah to create the index.

            The process looks like this...

            • create the RDD

            Generally with any databases (including MongoDB), index building operation will have a cost to it. If you create an index on an empty collection, the index building operation cost will be incurred during (per) insert operations. If you create the index after all the inserts, the index building cost will be incurred afterwards as well, which may lock the collection until the index build completes.

            You can choose either depending on your use case, i.e. if you'd like to access the collection as soon as it completes create the index on an empty collection.

            Note that MongoDB has two index build operations type: foreground and background. See MongoDB: Index Creation for more information.
