            PyTorch to ONNX export, ATen operators not supported, onnxruntime hangs out
            Asked 2022-Mar-03 at 14:05

            I want to export roberta-base based language model to ONNX format. The model uses ROBERTA embeddings and performs text classification task.

            Have you tried to export after defining the operator for onnx? Something along the lines of the following code by Huawei.

            On another note, when loading a model, you can technically override anything you want. Putting a specific layer to equal your modified class that inherits the original, keeps the same behavior (input and output) but execution of it can be modified. You can try to use this to save the model with changed problematic operators, transform it in onnx, and fine tune in such form (or even in pytorch).

            This generally seems best solved by the onnx team, so long term solution might be to post a request for that specific operator on the github issues page (but probably slow).

            AVX, AVX2, and FMA are CPU instruction sets and are not related to multi-threading. If the pip package for pytorch/caffe2 used these instructions on a CPU that didn't support them, the software wouldnt work. Pytorch, installed via pip comes with multi-threading enabled though. You can confirm this with torch.__config__.parallel_info()

            Issue when converting ONNX model to Caffe2
            Asked 2020-Nov-24 at 16:24

            I converted a TF model to ONNX and then ONNX model to Caffe2. The conversion happened successfully. However, I am getting a RunTime Error when trying to load and infer from the obtained model.

            This is the error that I am receiving. How do I add the attribute 'is_true' to SpatialBN node?

            I went through the pytorch repo and saw this issue, however, it is unresolved. In the code base of ONNX here, it adds is_test attribute for opset >=7 and I am using 8. However, it is still giving the error.

            The issue is resolved. I was using the command-line utility suggested on their README. However, it points to their tutorial in deprecated version of the code.

            The command-line utility (installed using the pip install onnx-caffe2) still has the _known_opset_version = 3. This was causing the error. After I used the conversion utility through Python APIs in PyTorch library by importing,

            I'm trying to build Pytorch on windows using visual studio, but it seems it faces some internal compiler error which I have not been able to figure out its cause. out of 46 targets, 35 gets built successfully until it ultimately fails with the following errors. An Internal compiler error is always a bug with the compiler. In this case, it's prevented building of a library that is needed later in the build process.

            Your options are limited. I suggest trying a different version of Visual Studio.

            You should also report this to Microsoft.

            Why use Caffe2 or Core-ML instead of LibTorch(.pt file) on iOS?
            Asked 2020-Jun-05 at 09:49

            It seems like there are several ways to run Pytorch models on iOS.

            1. PyTorch(.pt) -> onnx -> caffe2
            2. PyTorch(.pt) -> onnx -> Core-ML (.mlmodel)
            3. PyTorch(.pt) -> LibTorch (.pt)
            4. PyTorch Mobile?

            What is the difference between the above methods? Why people use caffe2 or Core-ml (.mlmodel), which requires model format conversion, instead of LibTorch?

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2020-Jun-05 at 09:49

            Core ML can use the Apple Neural Engine (ANE), which is much faster than running the model on the CPU or GPU. If a device has no ANE, Core ML can automatically fall back to the GPU or CPU.

            I haven't really looked into PyTorch Mobile in detail, but I think it currently only runs on the CPU, not on the GPU. And it definitely won't run on the ANE because only Core ML can do that.

            Converting models can be a hassle, especially from PyTorch which requires going through ONNX first. But you do end up with a much faster way to run those models.

            Minimal (light version) PyTorch and Numpy packages in production
            Asked 2020-Apr-27 at 16:55

            I am putting a model into production and I am required to scan all dependencies (Pytorch and Numpy) beforehand via VeraCode Scan.

            I noticed that the majority of the flaws are coming from test scripts and caffe2 modules in Pytorch and numpy.

            Is there any way to build/install only part of these packages that I use in my application? (e.g. I won't use testing and caffe2 in the application so there's no need to have them in my PyTorch / Numpy source code)

            ANSWER

            Answered 2020-Apr-27 at 16:55
            1. PyInstaller

            You could package your application using pyinstaller. This tool packages your app with Python and dependencies and use only the parts you need (simplifying, in reality it's hard to trace your package exactly so some other stuff would be bundled as well).

            Also you might be in for some quirks and workarounds to make it work with pytorch and numpy as those dependencies are quite heavy (especially pytorch).

            2. Use only PyTorch

            numpy and pytorch are pretty similar feature-wise (as PyTorch tries to be compatible with it) hence maybe you could only use only of them which would simplify the whole thing further

            3. Use C++

            Depending on other parts of your app you may write it (at least neural network) in C++ using PyTorch's C++ frontend which is stable since 1.5.0 release.

            Going this route would allow you to compile PyTorch's .cpp source code statically (so all dependencies are linked) which allows you for relatively small binary size (30Mb when compared to PyTorch's 1GB+), but requires a lot of work.

            The problem is that the Caffe2 ONNX backend does not yet support the export of the Resize operator.

            Please raise an issue on the Caffe2 / PyTorch github -- there's an active community of developers who should be able to address this use case.
