How do I find an AMI for creating a launch configuration in AWS's new console?
            Asked 2022-Mar-26 at 14:16

I'm trying to select an AMI in the Create Launch Configuration screen, but it's impossible to find my needed AMI from the dropdown.

            I expect the following menu:

            But AWS currently shows:

The dropdown has a lot of AMIs but not what I need.

I can't search for my AMI either - the dropdown isn't finding my existing AMI.

            Answered 2022-Mar-26 at 14:16

The AMI field on the Create Launch Configuration page does a search by AMI ID, not AMI name.

Searching for a value like 'Ubuntu' won't work.

Feel free to copy the AMI ID from the first page (e.g. ami-0069d66985b09d219 is an Amazon Linux 2 AMI in the eu-west-1 region), paste it in the field & it will find the AMI from your AMIs / AWS marketplace / community etc.

You're writing the object to S3 for each and every image ID. Instead, accumulate the image IDs in a list, and then upload that to S3 at the end. For example:

Azure DevOps Agent - Custom Setup/Teardown Operations
            Asked 2022-Feb-24 at 16:52

We have a cloud full of self-hosted Azure Agents running on custom AMIs. In some cases, I have some cleanup operations which I'd really like to do either before or after a job runs on the machine, but I don't want the developer waiting for the job to wait either at the beginning or the end of the job (which holds up other stages).

What I'd really like is to have the Azure Agent itself say "after this job finishes, I will run a set of custom scripts that will prepare for the next job, and I won't accept more work until that set of scripts is done".

In a pinch, maybe just a "cooldown" setting would work -- wait 30 seconds before accepting another job. (Then at least a job could trigger some background work before finishing.)

Has anyone had experience with this, or knows of a workable solution?

            Answered 2022-Feb-01 at 14:28

            I suggest three solutions

            1. Create another pipeline to run the clean up tasks on agents - you can also add demand for specific agents (See here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/devops/pipelines/process/demands?view=azure-devops&tabs=yaml) by Agent.Name -equals [Your Agent Name]. You can set frequency to minutes, hours, as you like using cron pattern. As while this pipeline will be running and taking up the agent, the agent being cleaned will not be available for other jobs. Do note that you can trigger this pipeline from another pipeline, but if both are using the same agents - they can just get deadlocked.

            2. Create a template containing scripts tasks having all clean up logic and use it at the end of every job (which you have discounted).

            3. Rather than using static VM's for agent hosting, use Azure scaleset for Self hosted agents - everytime agents are scaled down they are gone and when scaled up they start fresh. This saves a lot of money in terms of sitting agents not doing anything when no one is working. We use this option and went away from static agents. We have also used packer to create the VM image/vhd overnight to update it with patches, softwares required, and docker images cached. ref: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/devops/pipelines/agents/scale-set-agents?view=azure-devops

AWS is (mostly) region-based. This means that if you wish to communicate with a particular AWS service (eg Amazon EC2) in a particular region, then you must make an API call to that region. It can be done by specifying region_name when creating the client:

How to add a string to each cell of a row in a R data table?
            Asked 2022-Jan-04 at 02:59

I'm facing an issue which looks very basic, but I'm not able to find the solution.

            I have a simple table :

            Statut occupation 1983 1988 1996 2002 2007 2012 2017 Propriétaire du logement 207 267 305 363 468 597 482 Locataire 35 40 33 52 50 61 60 Locataire de l'habitat social (OPH, OTHS) 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 Logé gratuitement (parents, amis, employeurs) 39 47 69 99 57 87 98 Total général 281 354 407 514 575 745 640

I want to get this result :

            Statut occupation 1983 1988 1996 2002 2007 2012 2017 Propriétaire du logement 207 267 305 363 468 597 482 Locataire 35 40 33 52 50 61 60 Locataire de l'habitat social (OPH, OTHS) 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 Logé gratuitement (parents, amis, employeurs) 39 47 69 99 57 87 98 Total général 281 354 407 514 575 745 640

The purpose is just add a formatting (italic, underline, add unbreakable spaces...) on all the cells of one row. It looks like it's not that easy in R.

            What I've tried

I tried to get the name if each column and modify the cell corresponding in a for loop

Building custom AWS AMI with kernel 5.0.0-23-generic
            Asked 2021-Dec-17 at 09:13

I am trying to build an AMI with an specific linux kernel (5.0.0-23-generic) for AWS EKS.

Till now, I have followed the instructions available on: https://github.com/aws-samples/amazon-eks-custom-amis. This assumes usage of packer to build automated machine images.

I have built an Ubuntu 18.04 AMI, but on closer inspection, kernel 5.4 is used on the deployed EC2 Instance. Using the previous solution, I didn't find a way to name a specific kernel.

Are there any solutions to achieve the purpose of deploying an EKS compatible AMI with kernel 5.0.0-23-generic?

Note: countrycode::countryname throws a warning so it will probably not work in all cases. But at least to me the cases where it fails are rather exotic and small countries or islands.

            QUESTION

EC2 instance can't access amazon-linux repos (eg amazon-linux-extras install docker) through s3 gateway endpoint
            Asked 2021-Sep-21 at 08:22

I'm having s3 endpoint grief. When my instances initialize they can not install docker. Details:

I have ASG instances sitting in a VPC with pub and private subnets. Appropriate routing and EIP/NAT is all stitched up.Instances in private subnets have outbouond 0.0.0.0/0 routed to NAT in respective public subnets. NACLs for public subnet allow internet traffic in and out, the NACLs around private subnets allow traffic from public subnets in and out, traffic out to the internet (and traffic from s3 cidrs in and out). I want it pretty locked down.

            • I have DNS and hostnames enabled in my VPC
            • I understand NACLs are stateless and have enabled IN and OUTBOUND rules for s3 amazon IP cidr blocks on ephemeral port ranges (yes I have also enabled traffic between pub and private subnets)
            • yes I have checked a route was provisioned for my s3 endpoint in my private route tables
            • yes I know for sure it is the s3 endpoint causing me grief and not another blunder -> when I delete it and open up my NACLs I can yum update and install docker (as expected) I am not looking for suggestions that require opening up my NACLs, I'm using a VPC gateway endpiont because I want to keep things locked down in the private subnets. I mention this because similar discussions seem to say 'I opened 0.0.0.0/0 on all ports and now x works'
            • Should I just bake an AMI with docker installed? That's what I'll do if I can't resolve this. I really wanted to set up my networking so everything is nicely locked down and feel like it should be pretty straight forward utilizing endpoints. Largely this is a networking exercise so I would rather not do this because it avoids solving and understanding the problem.
            • I know my other VPC endpoints work perfectly -> Auto-scaling service interface endpoint is performing (I can see it scaling down instances as per the policy), SSM interface endpoint allowing me to use session manager, and ECR endpoint(s) are working in conjunction with s3 gateway endpoint (s3 gateway endpoint is required because image layers are in s3) -> I know this works because if I open up NACLS and delete my s3 endpoint and install docker, then lock everything down again, bring back my s3 gatewayendpoint I can successfully pull my ECR images. SO the s3 gateway endpoint is fine for accessing ecr image layers, but not amazon-linux-extra repos.
            • SGs attached to instances are not the problem (instances have default outbound rule)
            • I have tried adding increasingly generous policies to my s3 endpoint as I have seen in this 7 year old thread and thought this had to do the trick (yes I subbed my region correctly)
            • I strongly feel the solution lies with the s3 gateway policy as discussed in this thread, however have had little luck with my increasingly desperate policies.

Amazon EC2 instance can't update or use yum

            another s3 struggle with resolution:

By the looks of it, you are well aware of what you are trying to achieve. Even though you are saying that it is not the NACLs, I would check them one more time, as sometimes one can easily overlook something minor. Take into account the snippet below taken from this AWS troubleshooting article and make sure that you have the right S3 CIDRs in your rules for the respective region:

Make sure that the network ACLs associated with your EC2 instance's subnet allow the following: Egress on port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) to the Regional S3 service. Ingress on ephemeral TCP ports from the Regional S3 service. Ephemeral ports are 1024-65535. The Regional S3 service is the CIDR for the subnet containing your S3 interface endpoint. Or, if you're using an S3 gateway, the Regional S3 service is the public IP CIDR for the S3 service. Network ACLs don't support prefix lists. To add the S3 CIDR to your network ACL, use 0.0.0.0/0 as the S3 CIDR. You can also add the actual S3 CIDRs into the ACL. However, keep in mind that the S3 CIDRs can change at any time.

Your S3 endpoint policy looks good to me on first look, but you are right that it is very likely that the policy or the endpoint configuration in general could be the cause, so I would re-check it one more time too.

One additional thing that I have observed before is that depending on the AMI you use and your VPC settings (DHCP options set, DNS, etc) sometimes the EC2 instance cannot properly set it's default region in the yum config. Please check whether the files awsregion and awsdomain exist within the /etc/yum/vars directory and what's their content. In your use case, the awsregion should have:
