Web-Safe font not displaying in iOS emails
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 17:57

Trying to use Impact font in my html email, which is working fine in Outlook 365 windows and web clients, as well as Gmail client in browser, but the iOS native Mail app, Gmail app and Outlook apps all default back to arial. What am I missing?

Here's the table in question. Class is leftover from a MS port, and I'm leaving it in in the hopes that it improves mso performance, but all it's really doing is setting default font-family, font-size and margin (0).

Impact may not be 'websafe' then, as it appears to NOT be installed on Androids and iOS (mobile), otherwise it would work. Unless the class "MsoNormal" has a different font-family on it. (I would remove that, it's not necessary or related to performance.)

If that fails, you'll need you to use @font-face to load it in from a public website. Keep in mind @font-face is not supported on everything: https://www.caniemail.com/features/css-at-font-face/

As a fallback, you might like to use a similar font, via Google Fonts which is already setup for this: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Anton

But to make it work on absolutely everything, you'll need to save it as an image, and load in as

After div is expanded, no other buttons work in that vertical space
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 13:20

I have a tab button that handles the chatbox functionality. By default it is closed and when clicked, expands into the chat box. When it is closed all the buttons around it work as intended, however, when expanded the buttons above it can no longer be clicked like there is a invisible div over them.

Here I will provide the pictures of what I am describing and the corresponding code.

Your #olark-box-wrapper is a div with position:absolute; top: 0; height:100%; z-index:9999999999; ... no wonder it's taking up the full height of the right window area on top of everything else. And even though it's a transparent div, mouse clicks are handled by the event handlers of that div, not by those of the elements below it.

You could add pointer-events: none; to that div, making it "transparent" to user interaction. You may have to add pointer-events: visible; to its childs, to avoid the pointer-events: none; attribute being inherited by the children.

Alternatively, you could change the layout so that the #olark-box-wrapper is exactly the same height as its children.

One note about your choice of z-index: this number might be a bit too high, see Minimum and maximum value of z-index? (tl;dr: keep it in the range of a signed 32-bit number).

This is expected behavior. See MDN:

The ::first-letter CSS pseudo-element applies styles to the first letter of the first line of a block-level element, but only when not preceded by other content (such as images or inline tables).

What to do about it? If you have control of the HTML you could put the img before the span (with any needed styling, perhaps in a span of its own) or you could consider putting the img as a background, suitably styled.

From your image, it shows that the password (firsttt) is in the database in plaintext. However, when you are querying it, you are using md5 to hash it before you check the database. The MD5 hash of firsttt is 568745cb18115e238907fbf360beb37a and since that doesn't match the field in the database it does not return a result. If you want to see the result return positive, you can remove the md5() function for now just to see it but you should secure the database in some other way.

MD5 alone would not be secure as common passwords are easily detected. The passwords need to be hashed and salted, which makes them more unique and unindentifiable.

For example, php provides a password_hash function that will hash and salt the password: https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.password-hash.php

which you should use when adding a user to the database.

They also provide a password_verify function that will be able to tell you if the submitted password is correct: https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.password-verify.php

Bootstrap 5: How to add a $font-family-serif variable
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 09:29

I read through the Bootstrap 5 docs about typography and the files _variables.scss and _reboot.scss. I find that there is a SASS variable $font-family-sans-serif to set the font stack for sans serif text, but no corresponding $font-family-serif for serif text.

FWIW: It used to be present in _variables.scss for Bootstrap 3, but seems to missing from Bootstrap 4 as well.

Do I just declare it myself in my _variables_custom.css or is there a canonical way to do it?

Why was it omitted from the standard Bootstrap 5 set of varaibles?

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-15 at 09:29

Bootstrap (in its SCSS source format) is a framework - a stating point if you will - so it's expected that you add your own variables & elements and/or modify the existing ones. There is no $font-family-serif because its just not required for that core code.

As to how to customise - start with https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/customize/sass

Why was it omitted? - Refactoring. Removing "dead code" (obsolete variables, parameters, fields, methods and/or class') is a very common "code cleaning" practice. A serif font is just not used, so it got deleted. (Not even in BS3 was it "used". It was declared, but not referenced in anything except the customizer.)

But that's the beauty of frameworks - you can just add/delete/change it yourself. :)

            Answer:

Unfortunately doing this directly by attempting to web scrape the search results using UrlFetchApp will not work. You can use third party tools to get the number of search results, however.

            More Information:

I tested this out using an exponential backoff method which sometimes is able to get past 429 errors when a fetch request is invoked by UrlFetchApp.

When using UrlFetchApp to either web scrape or to connect to an API, it can happen that the server denies the request on the grounds of too many requests - or HTTP Error 429.

Google Apps Script runs in the cloud, from a set of IP addresses in a pool that Google own. You can actually see all the IP ranges here. Most websites (especially large companies such as Google) have architecture in place to prevent the use of bots scraping their websites and slowing down traffic.

Sometimes it's possible to get past this error, using a mixture of exponential backoff and random time intervals as shown for the Binance API (Full Disclosure: this GitHub repository was written by me.)

I assume that either Google directly blocks the Apps Script IP pool, or there are simply too many people trying the same thing - because with the same techniques I was unable to get any response that didn't involve entering a captcha as we discussed in the comments above and can be seen in the log of the page string.

            What can be done:

There are many third party APIs that you can use to do this, and I suggest searching for one that meets your needs.

I tested out one called Authoritas which returns search engine indexing for different keywords. The API is asynchornous, so can take up to a minute to get a response, so a Web App solution needs to be made.

The flow I used is as follows:

I'm trying to make a string that will write itself letter by letter until completing the sentence, and the speed of appearing each letter is based on an input that varies from 1 to 10. At the end of the string, it will blink for 5 seconds until that an alien will appear. My idea was to create a setInterval to add the letters and when the counter added the array size it would return the final animation of the loop with the new setInterval call, and before it was called again it had already been cleared, and called again in a recursion by setTimout callback to maintain the infinite loop. But it's not reaching setTimout, why?
