I'm aware of this question, but the problem is that the video does not stops exactly at the good frame. Sometimes it continues forward for one frame and when I force it to come back to the initial frame we see the video going backward, which is weird. Even worse, if the next frame is completely different (different background...) this will be very visible.

The VideoFrame api heavily relies on FPS provided by you. You can find FPS of your videos offline and send as metadata along with stop frames from server.
The site videoplayer.handmadeproductions.de uses window.requestAnimationFrame() to get the callback.

I'm having regularly issue with hvc1 videos getting an inconsistent number of frames between ffprobe info and FFmpeg info, and I would like to know what could be the reason for this issue and how if it's possible to solve it without re-encoding the video.
I wrote the following sample script with a test video I have
I split the video into 5-sec segments and I get ffprobe giving the expected video length but FFmpeg gave 3 frames less than expected on every segment but the first one.
The issue is exactly the same if I split by 10 seconds or any split, I always lose 3 frames.
I noted that the first segment is always 3 frames smaller (on ffprobe) than the other ones and it's the only consistent one.

Answered 2022-Jan-11 at 22:08The source of the differences is that FFprobe counts the discarded packets, and FFmpeg doesn't count the discarded packets as frames.
Your results are consistent with video stream that is created with 3 B-Frames (3 consecutive B-Frames for every P-Frame or I-Frame).
According to Wikipedia:
I‑frames are the least compressible but don't require other video frames to decode.
P‑frames can use data from previous frames to decompress and are more compressible than I‑frames.
B‑frames can use both previous and forward frames for data reference to get the highest amount of data compression.
When splitting a video with P-Frame and B-Frame into segments without re-encoding, the dependency chain breaks.
- There are (almost) always frames that depends upon frames from the previous segment or the next segment.
- The above frames are kept, but the matching packets are marked as "discarded" (marked with
AV_PKT_FLAG_DISCARD
flag).
For the purpose of working on the same dataset, we my build synthetic video (to be used as input).

Seekable raw file: Try to play the video in a native browser element. This will only work if the video is already in a supported streamable format, which is (currently) only webm and mp4 (and only mp4's generated with the correct parameters). If the video format is not supported you will get an error message in your browser
Raw file: This is mostly the same as Seekable raw file, with the same limitations. But this one also does not support HTTP range requests, which means you can't easily skip forward in the video.
Transcoded webm stream: This mode uses a ffmpeg to transcode the video file to webm file and stream it to the user. A working ffmpeg installation is required because youtube-dl-viewer will simply call the ffmpeg command. If you do not have (and do not want) a ffmpeg installation you can start youtube-dl-viewer with the command --no-ffmpeg to disable all ffmpeg dependent functionality. If you don't want to use the default ffmpeg of your system you can specify an executable with the arguments --exec-ffmpeg and --exec-ffprobe You can tweak the ffmpeg parameters with the parameter --webm-convert-params. Depending on the video, the parameter and you machine ffmpeg may not be able to encode the video fast enough for a smooth playback. To fix this prolem (at least a bit) you can supply youtube-dl-viewer with a --cache path where past converted videos will be remembered so that the next time the converted artifacts will be re-used. Also you can limit the maximum amount of parallel ffmpeg conversion jobs with the --max-parallel-convert parameter.
Download file: Simply prompt the user to download the video file.
VLC protocol link (stream): Opens a vlc://... link to the video file. This is useful if your videos are in a format that's generally streamable but simply not supported by your browser (a common example is mkv). Unfortunately vlc is not a protocol that's supported by default so you have to manually register it, an implementation/installation can be found at stefansundin/vlc-protocol. This option depends on a working vlc:// protocol and the fact that the video format is supported by VLC.
VLC protocol link (local): This is mostly the same as VLC protocol link (stream) but it adds the local file path to your VLC playlist and not the video URL. This is preferable if youtube-dl-viewer is running on your machine, because then the VLC Player doesn't have to yo through web requests to get the file and can simply read it from your hard drive, but of course this only works if VLC can access the original video file path (eg if its not running on a server)
