How can I ingest into Kafka text files that were created for splunk?
            Asked 2021-Jun-10 at 13:26

I'm evaluating the use of apache-kafka to ingest existing text files and after reading articles, connectors documentation, etc, I still don't know if there is an easy way to ingest the data or if it would require transformation or custom programming.

            The background:

We have a legacy java application (website/ecommerce). In the past, there was a splunk server to do several analytics.

The splunk server is gone, but we still generate the log files used to ingest the data into splunk.

The data was ingested to Splunk using splunk-forwarders; the forwarders read log files with the following format:

The events are single lines of plaintext, so all you need is a StringSerializer, no transforms needed

If you're looking to replace the Splunk forwarder, then Filebeat or Fluentd/Fluentbit are commonly used options for shipping data to Kafka and/or Elasticsearch rather than Splunk

If you want to pre-parse/filter the data and write JSON or other formats to Kafka, Fluentd or Logstash can handle that

Forward requests to internal service lambda AWS
            Asked 2021-Jun-04 at 22:01

I need to forward a http request recieved to a lambda function to another url (ECS service) and send back the response.

I manage to achieve this behaviour with the following code:

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-04 at 22:01

The issue was that the response from the lambda function was a plain json string and not html (as pointed out by @acorbel), hence the load balancer could not process the response, resulting in a 502 error.

The solution was to add http headers and a status code to the response:

AWS EBS - How to pull environment name into .ebextensions script
            Asked 2021-Jun-01 at 07:38

I have a grails app that I deploy to AWS Elastic Beanstalk through Jenkins. I want to add a splunk forwarder to my project so I can keep track of my logs outside of AWS and set up easy notifications.

The problem is, I have multiple environments of the app running (dev, pre-prod, prod, etc), which is fine because you can just change the environment name for the forwarded and be able to easily sort through that in Splunk.

However, the same .ebextensions file has to be used between all the environments, no I need a way to set the environment name to whatever AWS has the name as. Is there a way I can easily do this that I'm overlooking?

            You can try below steps:

            1. Configure your AWS Elasticbeanstalk environment with the environment variable ENVIRONMENT_NAME = 'Development' or 'QA' or 'Prod'

            please refer aws-official-docs for same.

            1. Then update config as below:

The DWARF file in the dSYM only has symbol information & debug information in it, it does not contain a complete copy of the binary's TEXT & DATA segments. If there is a copy of the binary next to the dSYM on the file system lldb will load that when it loads the dSYM. Or you can use the target modules add command to tell lldb to load the binary into the current session.

Forward syslog stream using Splunk Forwarder

How can I forward syslog stream using Splunk Universal Forwarder?

I have a centos7 system, and I want to forward the stream eg. localx without having to write it to disk. Currently, I am only able to forward if I write the stream to disk and configure the forwarder to consume the file.

            Answered 2021-May-19 at 20:00

If you insist on using the UF then writing to disk is the way.

If you want to avoid writing to disk and are open to a non-UF solution, then consider Splunk Connect for Syslog (SC4S). It's a docker app that receives syslog streams and sends them to Splunk HEC inputs. See https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4740/ for more information.

Cannot access Private AKS cluster from Local Machine (on home network) connected to Azure VPN
            Asked 2021-May-03 at 08:22

I have a Private AKS cluster deployed in a VNET on Azure. Once I deployed it, a private endpoint and a private DNS zone were created by default therefore making the cluster accessible from VM's which are part of the same VNET. (I have a VM deployed in the same VNET as the AKS cluster and "kubectl" commands work in it.)

My requirement is that I want to perform the "kubectl" commands from my local machine (connected to my home network) and also connected to the VPN which connects to the VNET.

My machine can talk to resources within the VNET but cannot seem to resolve the FQDN of the private cluster.

I read somewhere that having a DNS forwarder setup in the same VNET can help resolve the DNS queries made from the local machine which can then be resolved by Azure DNS. Is this the way to go about this? Or is there a better way to solve this problem?

It would really help if someone could give me an action plan to follow to solve this problem.

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-May-03 at 08:22

The better way to perform the "kubectl" commands from your local machine to your private AKS cluster is to use AKS Run Command (Preview). This feature allows you to remotely invoke commands in an AKS cluster through the AKS API. This feature provides an API that allows you to, for example, execute just-in-time commands from a remote laptop for a private cluster. Before using it, you need to enable the RunCommandPreview feature flag on your subscription and install aks-preview extension locally. However, there is a limitation that AKS-RunCommand does not work on clusters with AKS managed AAD and Private link enabled.

In this case, If you want to resolve the FQDN of the private cluster from your on-premise network, you could select to use either the hosts file locally(used for testing) or use your DNS forwarder to override the DNS resolution for a private link resource like this.

The DNS forwarder will be responsible for all the DNS queries via a server-level forwarder to the Azure-provided DNS 168.63.129.16.You can provision IaaS Windows VM with DNS role or Linux VM with bind configured as a DNS forwarder. This template shows how to create a DNS server that forwards queries to Azure's internal DNS servers for Linux VM. Refer to this for DNS forwarder on Windows VM.

If there is an internal DNS server in your on-premise network. The on-premises DNS solution needs to forward DNS traffic to Azure DNS via a conditional forwarder for your public DNS zones(e.g. {region}.azmk8s.io). The conditional forwarder references the DNS forwarder deployed in Azure. You could read this blog about DNS configuration sections for more details.

No, that's not possible. Once the control flow reaches your Node application, an attacker will know that it exists. They will be able to tell the difference between a page that is rendered by the browser on failure to look up a domain name in DNS, and a page you return to them. Besides, they won't be using browsers to investigate targets, so they will see quite a bit more than what a user in a browser would.

I think your best bet would be to copy & paste one of those annoying domain parking pages that web hosts put on a domain when it was purchased but isn't yet hosting a page yet. Ideally you would use the parking page of the domain registrar you used to acquire your domain because it will be the most believable. And of course, try to replicate the entire message (including headers), not just the HTTP body. Unlike the idea of serving a fake "can't resolve domain" page, this one should be entirely possible.
