            Kafka Polling Mechanism

            Kafka messages that has been posted by the producer are keep appearing the consumer end after a specific interval

            I tried to consume a message from my Kafka topic, That Time I face the issue I explained above. I suppose, it happens due to repolling after 5 mins(Which is a default poll interval) set. Is my understanding correct?

            My Expected result is the message should not be reprocessed again and again. It should be processed only once. How Can I achieve that?

            Your configuration seems to be enable.auto.commit: false and auto.commit.interval.ms: some value

            Second configuration is causing messages appearing after some specific interval(some value). Same message is appearing at consumer end for processing because the message was not processed successfully first time. If no last offset information available with zookeeper or broker, and auto.offset.reset is set to smallest (or earliest) then processing will start from 0th offset. Change auto.offset.reset to largest (or latest) if you do not want to reprocess the same message.

            I am trying to achieve exactly once delivery using spring-cloud-stream-binder-kafka in a spring boot application. The versions I am using are:

            • spring-cloud-stream-binder-kafka-core-1.2.1.RELEASE
            • spring-cloud-stream-binder-kafka-1.2.1.RELEASE
            • spring-cloud-stream-codec-1.2.2.RELEASE spring-kafka-1.1.6.RELEASE

            • zookeeper-3.4.8
            • Kafka version : 0.10.1.1

            As explained by Marius, Kafka only maintains an offset in the log. If you process the next message, and update the offset; the failed message is lost.

            You can send the failed message to a dead-letter topic (set enableDlq to true).

            Recent versions of Spring Kafka (2.1.x) have special error handlers ContainerStoppingErrorHandler which stops the container when an exception occurs and SeekToCurrentErrorHandler which will cause the failed message to be redelivered.

            Kafka behaviour if consumer fail

            I've looked up throught a lot of different articles about Apache Kafka transactions, recovery and exactly-once new features. Still don't understand an issue with consumer recovery. How to be sure that every message from queue will be processed even if one of consumers dies?

            Let's say we have a topic partition assigned to consumer. Consumer polls a message and started to work on it. And shutted down due to power failure without commit. What will happens? Will any other consumer from the same group repoll this message?

            Consumers periodically send heartbeats, telling the broker that they are alive. If broker does not receive heartbeats from the consumer, it considers the consumer dead and reassigns its partitions. So, if consumer dies, its partitions will be assigned to another consumer from the group and uncommitted messages will be sent to the newly assigned consumer.

            JMS message preserve when DB down

            Application Overview :

            In my application we use to receive 60000 messages every day. It is using 11 MDB and MessageListener to subscribe the messages from different OMB queues and process it. Using weblogic server and JAP. We have total 32 instance for each MDB, because we have 8 different node each node's max-beans-in-free-pool is 4.

            Current Problem :

            When DB down, catch it in exception and rollback the transaction context so message will put back to queue. We checking if JMSXDeliveryCount is less then 100 it will retry else it will drop the message and send the email with message reference.

            Problem : Message is getting lose, 100 time retry reach with in few secs. but DB may up after 2 hours.

            Proposed approach :

            Check database connectivity prior to processing a message, if DB connectivity isssue – sleep the thread for 5mins after repoll to check the connection. In this case each MDB can hold 32 message (Tread) in application level remaining message will be in queue. We have 11 MDB so possible of (11*32) thread will be sleep in application level.

            I felt its bad to check DB connection for all message at initial level and holding 352 message (controlling 352 thread, possible of weblogic crash) in application level till DB up.

            Any better approach to handle this issue in MDB level or weblogic level ?

            I am not familiar with Web Logic but responding with my knowledge on IBM MQ.

            Have you looked at setting up Redelivery Limit and Error Destination properties for the queue from where your application is receiving messages? If the JMSXDeliveryCount property of a message exceeds Redelivery Limit, then that message will be routed to Error Destination, basically a queue or a topic. You could also setting up Redelivery Delay Override property for messages.

            You can write separate logic for moving messages from Error Destination to the queue from which your application receives messages. This way messages are not lost.
