QUESTION
I need to put overlay images to a video. It is working on Android without problem. But on iOS platform, if I try 23-24 overlay images, it is working correctly. If I try it with 30+ images, it gives memory allocation error.
Error while filtering: Cannot allocate memory
Failed to inject frame into filter network: Cannot allocate memory
Every overlay image is around 50 kb Video is around 250 MB I tried with smaller images, so I can use 40+ images without problem, so it is not related with counts, it is related with file size. I think there is a limit like 1MB for complex filter streams.
I tried lots of thinks but no luck.. I have two questions:
- Is my ffmpeg command correct?
- Can you suggest me any improvements, alternatives?

I'm trying to make burned subtitled video. But I also need to support emoji too. So I figured out it like these steps:
- Create all subtitle items as .png images.
- Overlay these images to video with correct timing.

Answered 2022-Mar-20 at 00:13What you are experiencing is the nature of large filtergraphs. Every link between filters requires a frame buffer (at least 6 MB) and filtering operation itself may require additional memory space. So, it must use up your iDevice's memory (which must be smaller than the Androids).
So, the solution must be the one which minimizes the number of filters, and you can do that by using the concat
demuxer so all your images originates from one (virtual) source, and use overlay
with more complex enable
option.

Answered 2022-Feb-14 at 00:56Applying this convolution matrix to a fully opaque image will inevitably produce a fully transparent output. This is because the total sum of kernel values is 0, so after multiplying the 9 neighboring pixels and summing them up you will get 0 in the alpha component of the result. There are two ways to deal with it:
- Make output opaque by using
settingAlphaOne(in:)
CIImage helper method. - Use
CIConvolutionRGB3X3
filter that leaves the alpha component alone and applies the kernel to RGB components only.
As far as the 2 pixels border, it's also expected because when the kernel is applied to the pixels at the border it still samples all 9 pixels, and some of them happen to fall outside the image boundary (exactly 2 pixels away from the border on each side). These non existent pixels contribute as transparent black pixels 0x000000.
To get rid of the border:
- Clamp image to extent to produce infinite image where the border pixels are repeated to infinity away from the border. You can either use
CIClamp
filter or the CIImage helper functionclampedToExtent()
- Apply the convolution filter
- Crop resulting image to the input image extent. You can use
cropped(to:)
CIImage helper function for it.
With these changes here is how your code could look like.

's are working.
Is it possible to see how some of CIFilter
default filters are implemented such as CIDissolveTransition
or CISwipeTransition
for example? I want to build some custom transition filters and want to see some Metal Shading Language
examples if possible. Can't really find any examples of transition filters on the Internet done in MSL, only in regular Metal pipeline.

This is part of an ongoing attempt at teaching myself how to create a basic painting app in iOS, like MSPaint. I'm using SwiftUI and CoreImage to do this.
While I have my mind wrapped around the pixel manipulation in CoreImage (I've been looking at this), I'm not sure how to add a drag gesture to SwiftUI so that I can "paint".
With the drag gesture, I'd like to do this:
onBegin and onChanged:
- send the current x,y position of my finger to the function handling the CoreImage manipulation;
- receive and display the updated image;
- repeat until gesture ends.
So in other words, continuously update the image as my finger moves.
UPDATE: I've taken a look at what Asperi below responded with, and added .gesture below .onAppear. However, this results in a warning "Modifying state during view update, this will cause undefined behavior."

I was walking through this tutorial on custom CIFilter:
Everything works perfectly except that the coordinates of the sampler are not normalized. So, e.g a condition like this pos.y < 0.33
doesn’t work, and the kernel uses actual image coordinates.
Since the tutorial is old there probably has been changes in CIFilter that “broke” this code. I looked through the manual for CI kernels but could not find a way to get normalized coordinates of a sampler inside the kernel.
