How can I reset sidenote numbering at each chapter in tufte-style Bookdown with HTML output?
            Asked 2021-May-29 at 19:12

I am working on converting a tufte-LaTeX book to tufte-Bookdown using the tufte and msmbstyle packages. I have a whole bunch of sidenotes and would like the numbering to restart with each chapter so I don't reach like 400 by the end of the book.

I found this CSS code in the Bookdown GitHub for doing this with regular Bookdown, which uses footnotes/endnotes. However, my attempts to modify the code to work with sidenotes have failed. This is my current CSS addition, which just takes that code and drops in sidenote or sidenote-number (which Inspect Element suggests are the correct tags) where footnote originally was:

How can I get Firebase Realtime Database to whitelist unwanted websites?
            Asked 2021-May-22 at 19:24

I am using Firebase Realtime Database to allow people in an art gallery to use their mobile phones to change a piece of generative art. The artwork is projected on the gallery wall and includes a QR code. When the user scans the QR code they go to a website which has a P5JS javascript app which they can enter some data and then press send. This sends it to the database. In the gallery another P5JS program is listening to the database and hears the new message and can display the data.

I am having problems with whitelisting.

The mobile phone app sits on a website www.website1.com/mobile/index.html

in the gallery the program is at this address www.website1.com/gallery/index.html

I want to make sure that the database can only read data from the website1 domain. How can I stop it receiving data from www.website2.com ?

There is no authentication involved - the system is very open.

I have tried to follow the instructions on

Google Developer Console > APIs and Services > Credentials > (found the right) API Key > and set HTTP Referrers to

            www.website1.com/*

and waited 5 minutes......but nothing happened. I can still send data to the database from website2.

In Firebase I have added the website1 domain to Authentification > Sign In Method > Authorized domains

although I don't really expect that to help - as I said there is no Authentication required.

            What am I missing?

            Thanks

I see here two potential solutions. You can decide what fits your need the best.

The first one would be to use the new App Check feature in Firebase. With that you can restrict the whole databse to only specific domains, apps and custom providers. You can find instructions for the setup here.

If you need a more customisable solution where for example one domain needs only read access and the other read and write I would recommend to restrict the whole realtime database for read and write and create a REST API with Firebase Cloud Functions. With those you can restrict access to for specific domains and IP Adresses. You have full control as if you are using an express server. You can even use express to make the setup easier.

How do I clear my randomly generated data to create new data in each file in a loop?
            Asked 2021-May-15 at 08:29

I've boiled down the logic of something I'm struggling to figure out (new to Python, been a long time since I've done any coding). I have the code below, the intention is to roll a d6 limit times (in this case 300) and then over a defined number of iterations generate a file with the resulting dice rolls for each 300 iterations into its own file.

What I get is n (loops) files with the same data in each one. So right now this will return random1.txt, random2.txt and random3.txt and all will have the same values in them.

Obviously I need to reinitialize resultsin some way at the start of each iteration of the parent while loop (while loops >=1:), I just can't figure out how.

If anyone can take pity on a blundering artist I'd appreciate it! This is part of an art project I'm working on to make generative art with an axidraw if anyone is curious.

How can I save the .svg output from an interactive() display with a "Save As" prompt?
            Asked 2021-May-12 at 03:24

Long time lurker, first time poster, hope someone can help!

I am an artist trying to wrap my head around generative/procedural design using numpy and various assorted tools in jupyter notebook.

I have some code https://github.com/GreySoulX/Circle-generator/blob/main/BrokenCircles.ipynb (see below) that will generate a number of concentric circles of random radius and output them as SVG code. I can get it to display, and I can even get the SVG output with the basic code, but when put it all in a functions and call it with interactive() my saved files come out empty rather that what is shown in my notebook with widgets.VBox() .

            Answered 2021-May-12 at 03:24
            What's happening

This is an issue with how the inline backend handles closing figures and what plt.savefig does internally. The way static figures are displayed in notebooks (i.e. when not using ipympl) is that at the end of cell execution (or in this case at the end of the callback from the slider) the current figure is closed and displayed.

However plt.savefig expects there to be a currently open figure as it calls plt.gcf (get current figure) internally which either grabs the most recently active figure or creates a new empty figure if no figures are active.

So when you did this not in functions the figure wasn't closed until the cell was finished executing and so plt.savefig was able to find the figure. However when you moved to functions it was no longer able to find the current figure.

There are two basic solutions to this.

            Solutions 1. Global fig

You can lift figure to the global scope and use fig.savefig - this makes sure that both the plot updating method and the saving method are refering to the same fig.

            Asked 2021-Apr-28 at 09:42

I have implemented a variational autoencoder with the Keras implementation as an example (https://keras.io/examples/generative/vae/). When plotting the training loss I noticed that these were not the same as displayed in the console. I also saw that the displayed loss in the console in the Keras example was not right considering total_loss = reconstruction_loss + kl_loss.

Is the displayed loss in the console not the total_loss?

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Apr-28 at 09:42

Well, apparently François Chollet has made a few changes very recently (5 days ago), including changes in how the kl_loss and reconstruction_loss are computed, see here.

Having run the previous version (that you can find at the link above), I significantly reduced the difference between the two members of the equation, even reducing with increasing epoch (from epoch 7, the difference is <.2), as compared to your values.

It seems that VAE are subject to reconstruction loss underestimation, which is an ongoing issue, and for that, I encourage you to dig a bit in the litterature, with e.g. this article (may not be the best one).

Hope that helps! At least it's a step forward.
