I have scoured every related stackoverflow question I can find and none of them solved the issue, apologies in advance if I missed the one that would have worked.
The application I am working on converts a video or audio file to an mp4, and later on the server to an hls playlist. I just implemented audio and I wanted a background image. After reading through various options on stackoverflow I settled on the following args:
-y -i "C:\path\ExternalAudioBackground.png" -i "C:\path\Audio.mp3" -vf scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:-1:-1:color=black -c:a copy -vcodec libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p "C:\path\external_media_file.mp4"
This set of args was chosen because it is instantaneous due to -c:a copy as well as constraints to ensure all videos have the same aspect ratio and encoding.
The issue is when converting this to an hls stream the stream fails to play (in video.js player, and also vlc) with the message :

For HLS content, a duration in excess of the target duration may result in playback issues. Adding -loop 1 to the start increases the processing time from millseconds to minutes, but produces a working file
Adding -r 1 and -loop 1 takes longer to process than without -r (!?)
Adding -stream_loop 116 (116 is the length of the audio in seconds divided by 4, the desired hls segment size) before the image input loops the first 4 seconds of the audio over and over
adding -g 96 (96 is the fps * 4)
In case relevant, the hls encoding arguments look like this:
-safe 0 -f concat -i listOfFiles.txt -c:a aac -ar 48000 -b:a 128k -vcodec copy -crf 20 -g 48 -keyint_min 48 -sc_threshold 0 -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2675k -bufsize 3750k -hls_time 4 -hls_playlist_type vod -hls_segment_filename segment-%03d.ts result.m3u8
listOfFiles.txt always contains only one file in the case being discussed.
How can I achieve this with the minimum processing time but still have the file convertable to HLS?

Answered 2020-Aug-30 at 08:34There is no guarantee that asynchronous actions executed in the beforeunload
event will complete, and axios uses an asynchronous way of making requests.
You can probably use good old XHR to make a synchronous request. If you go to the section labeled Adapting Sync XHR use cases to the Beacon API
, they will go over strategies of keeping requests alive during unload because synchronous XHR is deprecated.
Note that synchronous HTTP requests are generally a bad idea because they will render the page unresponsive while they are completing. I'm not sure what the behavior would be for a synchronous request during unload.

To troubleshoot check if the .m3u8 files are created under the folder specified in hls_path
of your nginx conf. Rest is just nginx serving a file using http.
If that works try the HLS url directly in safari (safari got inbuilt HLS player) or in Chrome (Play HLS M3u8) extension enabled.
If that works the problem must be with your player.html

I'm trying to make a basic online video editor with nodeJS and ffmpeg.
To do this I need 2 steps:
set the in-and-out times of the videos from the client, which requires the client to view the video at specific times, and switch the position of the video. Meaning, if a single video is used as an input, and split it into smaller parts, it needs to replay from the starting time of the next edited segment, if that makes sense.
send the input-output data to nodejs and export it with ffmpeg as a finished vide.
At first I wanted to do 1. purely on the client, then upload the source video(s) to nodeJS, and generate the same result with ffmpeg, and send back the result.
But there are may problems with video processing on the client side in HTML at the moment, so now I have a change of plans: to do all of the processing on the nodeJS server, including the video playing.
This is the part I am stuck at now. I'm aware that ffmpeg can be used in many different ways from nodeJS, but I have not found a way to play a .mp4 webm video in realtime with ffmpeg, at a specific timestamp, and send the streaming video (again, at a certain timestamp) to the client.
I've seen the pipe:1 attribute from ffmpeg, but I couldn't find any tutorials to get it working with an mp4 webm video, and to parse the stdout data somehow with nodejs and send it to the client. And even if I could get that part to work, I still have no idea to play the video, in realtime, at a certain timestamp.
I've also seen ffplay, but that's only for testing as far as I know; I haven't seen any way of getting the video data from it in realtime with nodejs.
So:
how can I play a video, in nodeJS, at a specific time (preferably with ffmpeg), and send it back to the client in realtime?

- set the in-and-out times of the videos from the client, which requires the client to view the video at specific times, and switch the position of the video. Meaning, if a single video is used as an input, and split it into smaller parts, it needs to replay from the starting time of the next edited segment, if that makes sense.
Client-side, when you play back, you can simply use multiple HTMLVideoElement instances that reference the same URL.
For the timing, you can manage this yourself using the .currentTime
property. However, you'll find that your JavaScript timing isn't going to be perfect. If you know your start/end points at the time of instantiation, you can use Media Fragment URIs:
