How to run custom tasks in production by manually calling them?
            Asked 2021-May-24 at 14:38

I compile and deploy my Phoenix projects manually, with no third-party library such distillery, and with a help of the commands “mix compile” and “mix release”, basically.

I need a way to run custom commands or tasks on a server in the production mode. It’d be similar to running migrations. But I’ve bewildered as for how it’s done. A project itself may or may not be up and running when a command or task is being executed. And I need to be able to pass some arguments to a said command-task.

            How to do it?

            (1) I’m aware of

defmodule Mix.Tasks.MyTask1 do .... but how would I do it in production, on a server? Is this even a proper and recommended way to run them on a server in production?

            (2) I’m aware of bin/my_app eval 'MyProject.MyTask1' but why does it exist if there’s the other abovementioned approach? Again, is this one a proper and recommended way to run them on a server in production?

            (3) Are there other approaches?

I’m bewildered. Which one to use, in what circumstances? How to use them properly?

There are a few ways to accomplish this that I'm aware of, each has their pros/cons. Defining custom mix tasks, for example, is simple, but in your case, Mix is not available on a built+compiled release.

The solution I've usually landed on is to support a finite number of tasks (e.g. migrations): these are things that must be run occasionally/manually on a live production instance. This is a bit more structured than a regular mix task, but it's written a way that works without mix. See the Phoenix docs for an example, but it boils down to calling the necessary functions from a regular module instead of via a mix task. This assumes that you are able to connect to a running instance of your app via iex (e.g. by SSH'ing into the box and running ./bin/myapp remote or similar).

This question may not generate high quality answers because any solutions are somewhat subjective.

From the context "Nodist", I assume you have installed Nodist on your machine aside from the node.js instance. I'm not sure how you installed your node.js, but it looks the cause of the problem is because the conflict from your node.js and Nodist.

Maybe you can try uninstalling Nodist and try again, or try the same command on a different machine or on a virtual machine?

How to clone a terminal in vscode?
            Asked 2021-May-13 at 10:40

I am using the java debugger and the java projects extension on vscode and I need to compile my project two times using the java process console which pops out when I choose the 'play' icon from the gui next to my project name (in java projects extension tab in the integrated explorer). The problem is that when the server of my application is running and I choose to compile and run the Client side from that same icon, nothing really happens because the java process console is already busy running the Server. So my question is:

How to open an additional java process console? Is there any special command that I can run to launch another java process console after I split the first one?

NOTE My question is very similar to this one but since there was no activity there, I opened a new one. Any help is much appreciated.

@MollyWang Thank you for your interest, but I am satisfied with a workaround I was told to try out.The command that is going to run a certain executable while taking into consideration all the classes of the java project is produced by the vscode gui and printed in the terminal (Java Proccess console). Then I copy it, open another cmd and change the file I want to be run. All of that because, vscode cannot have to Java consoles opened at the same time. Once you try to run your Client program at a new console , you will be prompted to the first one you created and you will miss the execution of your Server.class.

So if you are using the VsCode Java Projects extension and reading this, don't waste any time trying to clone the terminal the extension creates for you.
It simply cannot be done.Hope that helped.

Report does not display refreshed data on Power BI - SSAS tabular model
            Asked 2021-May-08 at 09:59

We have a SSAS that retrieves data from a MySQL using a scheduled job, which invokes the Refresh command with the "full" refresh type (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/analysis-services/tmsl/refresh-command-tmsl?view=asallproducts-allv...

This job started failing due to "out of memory" and "MySQL: timeout reading communication packets" errors.

So I changed the refresh type to "automatic" and worked fine, since adding more memory is currently not possible. The job finishes, and after manually updating the dataset in powerbi.com, new dates appear in the reports' filters, as if new data is available, but it is not shown:

If I change the filter to display data from march, it works (all new data is from april and may).

I tried executing the refresh command using types "calculated" and "add", but the model has calculation partitions and didn't worked. I don't know exactly what "clearValues" does, so I didn´t try it.

Also on-premises data gateway is updated to the latest version.

            Any suggestions?

            Thanks.

Automatic processing might have some issues when SSAS tries automatically identify objects that need to be processed and what type of processing is needed.

It seems that the dimension table with dates is been handled but the related fact table is not. If you have the option, you could set full processing as separate steps. For example, do full processing to dimensions on the first step and then full processing to fact tables on another step. Lastly do calculate (aka. recalc) to the whole cube. That will save some amount of memory. If not enough though, you could set different steps for each fact table. Remember to do calculate at the end.

What does "-sd+" do in bash's paste command?

When searching for a command to sum numbers I stumbled upon this StackExchange answer that said the solution laid in a set of piped commands like the following:

paste -sd+ is just a shorter way of writing paste -s -d + or paste -s -d "+". So it is indeed the new delimiter.

Add a file to `/docker-entrypoint.d/` as part of a app.conf.template file to swap global variables into nginx set up
            Asked 2021-Mar-23 at 12:16

I would like to pass global variables to my nginx app.conf via a app.conf.template file using docker and docker-compose.

When using an app.conf.template file with no commands in docker-compose.yaml my variables translate successfully and my redirects via nginx work as expected. But when I use a command in docker-compose my nginx and redirects fail.

My set up is per the instructions on the documentation, under section 'Using environment variables in nginx configuration (new in 1.19)':

Out-of-the-box, nginx doesn't support environment variables inside most configuration blocks. But this image has a function, which will extract environment variables before nginx starts.

Here is an example using docker-compose.yml:

            web: image: nginx volumes:

            • ./templates:/etc/nginx/templates ports:
            • "8080:80" environment:
            • NGINX_HOST=foobar.com
            • NGINX_PORT=80

By default, this function reads template files in /etc/nginx/templates/*.template and outputs the result of executing envsubst to /etc/nginx/conf.d ... more ...

My docker-compose.yaml works when it looks like this:

Provide the AWS PHP SDK with credentials via Symfony DotEnv
            Asked 2021-Feb-22 at 20:57

            In a Symfony 4.3 application using symfony/dotenv 4.3.11 and aws/aws-sdk-php 3.173.13:

I'd like to authenticate the AWS SDK using credentials provided via environment variables, and I'd like to use the dotenv component to provide those environment variables.

This should be possible: Setting the AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY environment variables is one way to automatically authenticate the with the aws sdk. And DotEnv should turn your configuration into environment variables.

However, when I set these variables in my .env.local or .env files, I get the following error:

Aws\Exception\CredentialsException: Error retrieving credentials from the instance profile metadata service.

            This does not work:

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Feb-22 at 20:57

The aws php client documentation states:

The SDK uses the getenv() function to look for the AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and AWS_SESSION_TOKEN environment variables.

=> it uses getenv() not $_ENV.

But the Symfony Dotenv component (by default) just populates $_ENV and doesn't call putenv therefore your settings in .env files are not accessible by getenv().

            Here are some options:

            1. call Dotenv())->usePutenv(true) (but as symfony states: Beware that putenv() is not thread safe, that's why this setting defaults to false)

            2. call putenv() manually exclusively for the aws setting

            3. Wrap the aws client in your own symfony service and inject the settings from .env
