            In C, does popen write its result in the hard drive as a file pointer?

            I created and ran a C program that used popen to call a command from the terminal and check the corresponding output in the file pointer that popen returned. popen and pclose were in a while loop which ran millions of times. However, since popen returns a file pointer, I'm worried that it was creating and deleting this information from my SSD all these millions of times and potentially shortening the life span of the SSD by this.(Because files are stored in storage) I am pretty sure I am wrong on this and that is not how it works but I just want to be sure.

            You are correct, it a pipe between two processes doesn't take a detour via harddisk.

            Some background: in Unix/Linux, file descriptors are also used for all possible things that are not actually files.

            • Network sockets
            • Timers
            • Device files (keyboard or mouse input, for example)
            • Pipes (as you noticed)
              • This includes console standard input/output/error, e.g. for printf (which can be redirected to a file sometimes, without the program noticing)
            • Any other message queue (for IPC)
            • etc.

            Those things all have something in common: your application will need to call into the kernel (write() or read()) and may have to wait until input/output is possible.

            If you are waiting for multiple of those things at once, there is a big advantage of having only file descriptors: you can give the kernel a list of file descriptors that you're waiting for, and it will wake up your process if any of them is ready. If you want to read more about this, look at the select or poll/epoll manpages/syscalls.

            Without this concept, you'd have to use a new thread for everything you are waiting for, unless you are okay with blocking your whole program or wasting CPU time with polling (non-blocking I/O).

            Elasticsearch service hang and kills while data insertion jvm heap

            I am using elasticsearch 5.6.13 version, I need some experts configurations for the elasticsearch. I have 3 nodes in the same system (node1,node2,node3) where node1 is master and else 2 data nodes. I have number of indexes around 40, I created all these indexes with default 5 primary shards and some of them have 2 replicas. What I am facing the issue right now, My data (scraping) is growing day by day and I have 400GB of the data in my one of index. similarly 3 other indexes are also very loaded. From some last days I am facing the issue while insertion of data my elasticsearch hangs and then the service is killed which effect my processing. I have tried several things. I am sharing the system specs and current ES configuration + logs. Please suggest some solution.

            The System Specs: RAM: 160 GB, CPU: AMD EPYC 7702P 64-Core Processor, Drive: 2 TB SSD (The drive in which the ES installed still have 500 GB left)

            ES Configuration JVM options: -Xms26g, -Xmx26g (I just try this but not sure what is the perfect heap size for my scenario) I just edit this above lines and the rest of the file is as defult. I edit this on all three nodes jvm.options files.

            My issue is solved, It is due to the heap size issue, actually I am running the ES as service and the heap size is by default 2 GB and it is not reflecting. I just install the new service with the updated options.jvm file with heap size of 10 GB, and then run my cluster. It reflect the heap size from 2 GB to 10 GB. And my problem is solved. Thanks for the suggestions.

            1. This message is expected behaviour during balancing when there is read request for documents already migrated to other shard.
            2. The meaning is that the mongos is not able to establish remote cursor to the old shard since the config is reported stale and data is moved to the new shard.
