Answered 2018-Dec-19 at 11:17You can reconfigure your Jenkins container to publish its log files to a host directory (use docker run -v
to provide some host directory for the /var/jenkins_home/jobs
tree; this is probably a good idea regardless since you don't want to lose all of your job history if you ever need to update the underlying Jenkins code). You can then either use docker run -v
to inject that same directory into the Filebeat container, or just run Filebeat directly on the host (if its principal job is reading host-system files...).
If you have the option and are in a more productiony setup, switching log drivers to point at your logstash is also a good idea, but that will only collect the main process's stdout and stderr (instead of having to run docker logs
that data will show up on your central log server). That won't collect the per-Jenkins-job log files, though.
My experience agrees with the Vagrant bug you quote: never look inside /var/lib/docker
, and especially don't try to mount Docker's internal state into a Docker container. (You probably won't get a kernel panic.)

For the last three days I've been trying to gather all logs from the containers I have in my Docker and send them to Logstash. I've been working with the ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana) and I'm using Logspout as the router for this logs.
All three instances of the ELK Stack are running in a different containers. I've followed this setup.

Answered 2017-Aug-25 at 09:51Probably, your apache2 container is logging access and errors to stdout only.
One option you have is to add another container that runs filebeat
configured to push data to logstash (you'll need to adjust logstash config, too), make a shared volume between your apache container and this new container, finally, make apache write logs in the sared volume.

Install docker-logging
Spin up an Elasticsearch server. The easiest way to do this is via the AWS Elasticsearch Service:

Set a domain name
Use the default options
Set an Access Policy. I suggest applying both IAM access to write to elasticsearch from your AWS account and IP-specific access so you can view logging outputs in Kibana. Here's a sample policy (be sure to change the region and xxxxxxxxxxxx with your 12-digit AWS account ID):
Make sure your EC2 Instance or Autoscaling Group has an Instance Profile and Role which grant write access to your Elasticsearch service. Here are example Cloud Formation resources which enable this. Submit an ECS task definition which uses the gelf logging driver. The ContainerDefinition should include a section like this: "logConfiguration": { "logDriver": "gelf", "options": { "gelf-address": "udp://localhost:12201", "tag": "nginx" } } Note the log option tag requires Docker > 1.9. For Docker 1.8, use gelf-tag. Otherwise, ECS may report Failed to initialize logging driver: unknown log opt 'tag' for gelf log driver". As of this writing, the CloudFormation AWS::ECS::TaskDefintiion does not support the logConfiguration settings of an ECS TaskDefinition. Watch the Cloudformation Release History to be notified when this will be supported.
