Git rebase commit replays vs merge commits: a concrete example
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 13:22

I have a question about how rebasing works in git, in part because whenever I ask other devs questions about it I get vague, abstract, high level "architect-y speak" that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

It sounds as if rebasing "replays" commits, one after another (so sequentially) from the source branch over the changes in my working branch, is this the case? So if I have a feature branch, say, feature/xyz-123 that was cut from develop originally, and then I rebase from origin/develop, then it replays all the commits made to develop since I branched off of it. Furthermore, it does so, one develop commit at a time, until all the changes have been "replayed" into my feature branch, yes?

If anything I have said above is incorrect or misled, please begin by correcting me! But assuming I'm more or less correct, I'm not seeing how this is any different than merging in changes from develop by doing a git merge develop. Don't both methods result with all the latest changes from develop making their way into feature/xyz-123?

I'm sure this is not the case but I'm just not seeing the forest through the trees here. If someone could give a concrete example (with perhaps some mock commits and git command line invocations) I might be able to understand the difference in how rebase works versus a merge. Thanks in advance!

" It sounds as if rebasing "replays" commits, one after another (so sequentially) from the source branch over the changes in my working branch, is this the case? "

            Yes.

" Furthermore, it does so, one develop commit at a time, until all the changes have been "replayed" into my feature branch, yes? "

No, it's the contrary. If you rebase your branch on origin/develop, all your branch's commits are to be replayed on top of origin/develop, not the other way around.

Finally, the difference between merge and rebase scenarios has been described in details everywhere, including on this site, but very broadly the merge workflow will add a merge commit to history. For that last part, take a look here for a start.

I had the same problem and I found a workaround here at https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll/issues/8523

Add gem "webrick" to the Gemfile in your website. Than run bundle install

At this point you can run bundle exec jekyll serve

            For me it works!

Azure for startup: how to analyze costs
            Asked 2021-Jun-14 at 12:29

the customer where I'm working at the moment (and hopefully in the future...), posses an Azure Subscription for Startup. This is the tipical plan which gives you two years of free Azure credit.

I would like to analyze the cost of the Azure Infrastructure (for example: how much credit I consumed last day using the "storage account", or how much for ADB2C). Microsoft gave us a link where we can download an "excel" file which contains a "cost summary". But I didn't have access to such file. It's for "admin" only and is not "user/architect-friendly".

What are the best practice and tools to analyze the Azure Cost? I tried to use the "Cost Management" but, as you can see from the following screenshot, many "buttons" are "greyed out" and there is the following warning:

Cost Management requires access to a supported billing account or subscription. Please select a supported scope or create a new subscription to use Cost Management

Do you know if is possible to let this service "works" with a "free" subscription of azure for startup? Thanks for reading

Looks like Cost Management is not supported for the Azure Credit based Subscription.

            1. Please understand your Offer Type

From portal.azure.com, Select Subscriptions from All Services pan. Click on the Overview. You'll see the Offer and Offer ID

            1. Based on the Offer ID, please refer that against the supported Offers from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cost-management-billing/costs/understand-cost-mgt-data#supported-microsoft-azure-offers

This will help you to validate whether cost management is supportability for your Subscription

I am working with Angular 11 and trying to use short imports like import {smthg} from '@common' instead of import {smthg} from '../../../common'

But I always get errors in IDEA: TS2307: Cannot find module '@common' or its corresponding type declarations.

And same error in console when trying to compile .ts files (ng serve)

So it turned out that the angular engine allows creating aliases for paths based on what is specified in the "paths" in tsconfig.

But in order to be able to access both the subfolders of the module and what is exported from the index.ts at the top level of the module, you need to specify "paths" like this:

Amazon S3 redundancy over Availability Zones vs. over Regions
            Asked 2021-Jun-11 at 13:30

            This https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/storage/architecting-for-high-availability-on-amazon-s3/#:~:text=Amazon%20S3%20maintains%20redundancy%20even%20within%20one%20of,can%20still%20access%20their%20data%20with%20no%20downtime states the following:

Amazon S3 storage classes replicate their data on more than three Availability Zone (except for S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access).

What's the point of this article https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/startups/large-scale-disaster-recovery-using-aws-regions/ stating:

S3 snapshots: We rely on the cross s3 sync and this works like a charm. We are able to copy the data from our primary to the DR region within a matter of few minutes.

The latter seem superfluous now and is from 2017, so may be it is out-dated? Or is it the thrust that we should also be be placing Amazon S3 copies over over Regions? I see no such need as the AZ's within a Region are physically separated from each other. What am I missing?

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-11 at 13:30

S3 buckets are region specific. When you create a new bucket you need to select the target region for that bucket.

For DR reasons, you can keep backups in another region. Should the primary region fail in a way that the entire region is affected, then you could restore in the backup region.

Your DR strategy will depend on your use case, and your needs for returning services back to normal in case of region wide failure.

For example, let's say you rely on ec2/ebs to operate your service and those services suffer region wide outage for 5 hours. In order to recover your service you would need to move to a region where the resources are available. Assuming you need S3 data for operational processing you would want to have that data ready in the Target recovery region.

Make sure you are not passing a duplicate key names dashboard.yaml. you are using two files as input for secrets. CERT_FILE and KEY_FILE, make sure that there is no duplicate key in these two files, specially dashboard.yaml.

To demo the issue, passing a key called dashboard.yaml twice and getting the same error while creating secret. Note that, from-literal is used here for sake of simplicity.

You should grep for "dashboard.yaml" on CERT_FILE and KEY_FILE.

angular 10: image url given from assets after `Ng build` is listing directly under `dist` folder and `dist->assets`

I found one scenario where images are getting listed directly under the dist folder after ng build.

I have created a sample angular app. Below are the details. Even the image is there inside the assets folder. It is getting copied directly under dist. This way, its getting duplicated which also causes build size increase.

How to avoid this? I need the image only under assets folder. Outside should be clean. Please help if anyone faced a similar issue.

            1. Enable Azure MSI in Azure function

            2. Assign Azure RABC role Contributor role to the MSI
