How to use select() to set a timer for sockets?
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 21:17

I'm currently using Winsock2 to be able to test a connection to multiple local telnet servers, but if the server connection fails, the default Winsock client takes forever to timeout.

I've seen from other posts that select() can set a timeout for the connection part, and that setsockopt() with timeval can timeout the receiving portion of the code, but I have no idea how to implement either. Pieces of code that I've copy/pasted from other answers always seem to fail for me.

How would I use both of these functions in the default client code? Or, if it isn't possible to use those functions in the default client code, can someone give me some pointers on how to use those functions correctly?

select() can set a timeout for the connection part.

Yes, but only if you put the socket into non-blocking mode before calling connect(), so that connect() exits immediately and then the code can use select() to wait for the socket to report when the connect operation has finished. But the code shown is not doing that.

setsockopt() with timeval can timeout the receiving portion of the code

Yes, though select() can also be used to timeout a read operation, as well. Simply call select() first, and then call recv() only if select() reports that the socket is readable (has pending data to read).

PowerShell: Invoke-WebRequest - Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Uri'
            Asked 2021-Jun-15 at 21:03

I'm trying to help a developer who is trying to harden a web server against server-side request forgery. In short, I've wrote a script that sends a "forged" HTTP request which we will use to test against the server until it is configured to not respond to such manipulated requests. I'm getting an error on Invoke-WebRequest: "Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Uri'" and while I've tried a ton of different combos of the below code I cannot get it to fly. Any thoughts? Answered 2021-Jun-14 at 06:33

Long story short: shader visibility in DX12 is not a bit field, like in Vulkan, so setting the visibility to D3D12_SHADER_VISIBILITY_VERTEX | D3D12_SHADER_VISIBILITY_PIXEL results in the parameter only being visible to the pixel shader. Setting it to D3D12_SHADER_VISIBILITY_ALL solved my problem.

Why can't I use this transferEther function to send Ether to the smart contract?
            Asked 2021-Jun-13 at 21:44

I have this code I have entered into Remix IDE, as ReceivedEther.sol, a standalone smart contract.

I've transferred 0.02 Ether to the smart contract, using MetaMask.

When I checked the smart contract's balance, it returns 200000000000000000, as expected.

If I try to use the transferEther function, however, and enter a number smaller than this - say, 0.005 ETH, or 50000000000000000 as the amount - it doesn't work using MetaMask.

When MetaMask prompts me it's never for that amount. It's for 0 ETH and 0.00322 gas fee (or whatever the gas is). Basically it always set the amount of ETH at 0 and only charges the fee.

Why can't I transfer an amount of ETH using this function in the Remix IDE with MetaMask?

            ...

            ANSWER

            Answered 2021-Jun-13 at 21:44

Your code sends ETH (stated in the _amount variable) from the smart contract to the _recipient. So it doesn't require any ETH to be sent in order to execute the transferEther() function.

If you want your contract to accept ETH, the function that accepts it (or the general fallback() or receive() function) needs to be marked as payable.
